To not let neighbour park on our drive

Neighbour 2 up approached DH the other day to ask a favour.

He’s getting a new car and doesn’t want to park it on the road in case it gets damaged. There’s plenty of parking and it’s a fairly quiet road but he wants to park it off road. Can’t park on his own driveway as his wife’s car is there. Wants to use ours.

Was I unreasonable to say a flat out no?

There is no chance in hell I would allow anyone to park this glorified, fuggly skip on wheels in my drive.

Just say really sorry you can't help, it will block access for your gardener and that space is for your visitors. It might also affect your home insurance (no idea about that but he won't either). You would love to help but can't risk it.

I've learned the art of throwing out multiple watertight reasons quickly as I'm constantly asked for CF favours. They can't counter them all!

IF you decide to do this, set hard and fast rules. In fact, draw up a contract specifying where on the driveway he is allowed to park, and that if does not comply, and blocks you, you will have the car towed at his expense. Add any other items that worry you. Including your right to cancel the arrangement with (X number of days) notice. Charge him for the privilege. Nothing outrageous, but...well, I'm in the USA, but here, I'd say $1.00 a day, or $30.00 a month.

Bluntly say no, sorry. It will complicate our insurance and yours.

mylaptopismylapdog · 29/10/2020 09:25

No, who thinks like that! Tell him he shouldn’t have bought a car thinking someone else would accommodate it on their land. If it’s that precious he might want to pay to have it stored professionally.

This annoys the shit out of me, if your cars so special that it needs preferential parking buy a house with parking!
We don’t have drives down my street we all just park where we can apart from my neighbours who have to have their ‘nice’ cars right outside their house one on their front one on mine. If I ever have the audacity to park in front of my own house all hell brakes loose. Can’t have their 11 year old Audi across the street now can we...

I’m not knocking 11 year old Audi’s by the way, it’s just they act like it’s a fucking Rolls Royce🤦🏽‍♀️

@AintPageantMaterial

Tell him he can’t park his Hummer on your drive because you’re worried people might think it’s yours!

Any update OP?

Pedallleur · 01/11/2020 12:33

Say yes, 10k pa. You know what will happen so a polite no is the easiest way. No discussion, negotiations just no.

monstermancs · 01/11/2020 14:06

Wouldn't having some strangers car parked on your driveway invalidate your or their insurance somehow?
