To have let kitchen go because Tesco's do not come in anymore

lazyfecker · 27/10/2020 17:27

Just been cleaning the kitchen it is an absolute pit - when Tesco's used to bring the shopping right into the kitchen it forced me to do a little cleanup every week but that has been not been happening for months😝

Also please for the love of God could someone tell me about an easy way to clean up a bin? or a way of holding my rubbish in an easier receptacle than most pedal bins?

My current Adidas pedal bin is soaking in the bath with half a bottle of L'Oreal Dream Lengths shampoo the shampoo was hopeless for my hair let's hope it does a better job of cleaning the bin!!!!! It certainly smells goodGrin

@Dontfuckingsaycheese

Hope your bin was worth it OP 😉
I think I might have broken it so I am even more pissed off now! I could have got a new one and got away with not cleaning it for awhile!

Haven't you any bleach, Zoflora, disinfectant or other actual cleaners that kill all the germs that must be growing in there

Bleach zoflora and disinfectant aren’t cleaners. Hmm

Op, your shampoo is better at cleaning than the above products, bleach does what it says, it bleached the colour out of stains, the stain remains, you just can’t see it with thr naked eye, it also kills germs etc, it does not clean and is not sold ad a cleaner, Zolflora is a disinfectant it also kills germs, it does not clean.

@lazyfecker

I avoid all sprays now because of my lungs
So put some bleach or other cleaner on a cloth.

Or is there a reason this is not possible too?

stayathomer · 27/10/2020 18:46

I agree your house is always in better nick for visitors and agree with just a plastic bag. There's 6 here so we have a big enough bin and I hate it. If I were in your shoes I'd gleefully just put a bin bag on a cupboard handle!!!

lazyfecker · 27/10/2020 18:46

[quote Zagziggirl]I recommend this ikea bin. £9, big and easy to clean. I wash the lid in my sink every time I change the bag, but I do have a deep Belfast sink, you could always pop in the dishwasher or the bath again!

Thanks for that!

I have taken a look and it looks like a lovely simple straightforward bin - my current one has horrible awkward fiddly hinges and a horrible awkward foot pedal with lots of ridges and holes and difficult to clean I think I have broken it anywayBlush

NowI have an excuse to buy that bin!

@lazyfecker

The trick is to not overfill the bugger or split the bag. No need to immerse it or hose it,

That is interesting - whenever I watch cleaning programs the women are always immersing the bins! I am probably making the mistake of trying to go from a slob to an extreme cleaner I just need to find a sensible middle way as you suggest

As long as you wipe it out thoroughly with something suitable it should work. I can't be doing with hosing and soaking, always end up soaking wet and have to wait ages for the bin to dry. It is bad enough having to clean the filter in the tumble dryer without adding to the grief.
Lovelydovey · 27/10/2020 18:50

I empty the bin every 2-3 days, and don’t put food waste (which has a separate bin) or recycling (again a separate bin) in it. This means that mostly what goes in there is unrecyclable plastic and I rinse anything that contained raw meat or fish to minimise the smell.

I clean the bin lid every 2 weeks ish - I wash it up using washing up liquid. And clean the outside with stainless steel polish every month or so. But I do wipe up spills immediately and always empty it before it is overflowing.

I don’t think I’ve ever cleaned the inside of the bin, but have never needed to as I use decent bags which don’t split (helped by not overfilling).

I do have to clean the food waste bin weekly and the recycling bin every month though. Again I just wash them up.

Great plan! this is what I need - to find out easier ways of doing things and instead of making life harder for myself and then I need to stick to the cleaning program I've invented.

I do not have a dishwasher I have thought about one but my husband is not keen I could persuade him though

but I do fear it will be another fiddly machine I will need to clean and Harder work in the end?

When we were in a flat we didn’t have separate food waste and the bin was always super gross because it all went in there. A separate food waste caddy (with a nice secure lid) is much easier to keep clean than a whole bin imo.

I live in a flat and theres no way my life would be easier with separate food waste bins, my tiny kitchen is already tight on space with just the recycling and regular bin, no way I could find room for another bin.

Idk why your bins got super gross when you were in a flat, unless you weren't emptying it regularly, which is not a flat issue but an issue of over filling it. Where I live we have a gate, small courtyard and then stairs up to our main door and the bins (one general waste bin per flat as theres only 4 in my building and 2 communal recycling bins) are lined up to the side of the stairs so I have to walk past them to leave. I empty the bin every couple of days and just drop the rubbish in the general bin on my way out to work or get DD to drop it off on the way out to school.

Tbh I never understand why people buy expensive fancy bins - I have a simple plastic swing top bin that cost me about £7 - the top comes off and there are no nooks and crannies for grime and grossness to build up so it just gets a quick squirt of bleach in hot water and a wipe down every 6 weeks or so because it really doesnt get dirty unless a bag splits,in which case I rinse it out straight away.

SengaMac · 27/10/2020 18:52

Flylady says 'Cleaner is cleaner' and also says unwanted shampoo is great for cleaning toilets, so she'd be fine with using it for the bin.
(Probably recommends doing it more often, tho)

I have just rinsed it off in the shower and dried it and I think the lid is broken

Great! So now get one of the simple plastic ones with fewer nooks and crannies.

I find a smaller one is best, use 30 or 40 litre bags and empty before they get too full and split. I have this one as it is the right size for us. www.robertdyas.co.uk/addis-roll-top-bin-25l-metalic

we are roughly on the same page

So that is something at least!

Don't forget you can put it on a chair or something rather than bend over and lean into it to clean it. I do everything the easiest way possible.

timeforanewstart · 27/10/2020 18:54

I only clean bin ever month or so as it doesn't get dirty as bin bags don't split usually , when i do clean it i just tip in some hot water and washing up liquiid ( occasionally bleach ) but our bin water comes out so it doesn't soak for long
I keep top and lid wiped with disenfectant wipes in between and once a week on a bag change i give it a spray with dettol aerosol can thing , but its not a big bin so tends to get emptied every 2 days and food waste goes in food waste bin outside which helps

There are some great ideas there thank you so much!

my current bin is a 50 L and I really think it is too big For the two of us although we do use a lot of packaging with our food

It looks like I need to get a smaller been easier to handle and empty it more often

Another great idea I never would have thought of that!

Yes I am always looking for simpler and easier ways to do things I suppose I will have to do that more and more as I get older and more decrepitGrin

You are right of course little and often is the way to go I need to get back to FLY lady!

I feel a right judgemental cow now, sorry about that. I have a thing about cleaning, my mum's voice is always in my head telling me that everything should be spotless!

SleepingStandingUp · 27/10/2020 18:59

He would totally do it if I asked him but he works longer hours than me and does all the decorating and handiwork and putting out the rubbish as it is he's an adult. Can he not see his kitchen it dirty? It isn't your kitchen and your responsibility, it's both of yours.

Don't worry about it you really have been very helpful GrinI absolutely need a kick up the arse and you are right - my house should be cleaner! it annoys me too !

I really want it to be cleaner but I just cannot seem to find the energy and the follow-through but I will get there with the help of Mumsnet!

My life improved significantly when I ditched my general waste kitchen bin (which was a nightmare to clean) and started hanging a carrier bag/bin bag with tie handles off two hooks (one for each bag handle) on the back door. Bag goes straight out to the outside bin when full. No mess, no bin cleaning , no overfull bins - result!

rc22 · 27/10/2020 19:03

I don't have a bin. I have a binbag for rubbish and a binbag for recycling and just take them out to the wheelie bin each evening.
