To have a winter and summer duvet?

My husband thinks it's odd, but it makes perfect sense to me.

I like 4.5 tog for summer and 10.5 for winter.

We've done this for years and he's fine with me changing them, but doesn't understand it as he had never heard of it before meeting me and knows no one else who does it. Am I unusual or is he?

I hadn’t realised until last night but I seem to have summer and winter duvet covers also.
Laundry mess up meant I needed to use cover not used since heatwave days on summer duvet. It’s very much thinner than others and last night was Noticeably cooler than other covers.
Without being aware of it that cover is only used during warmer months.

Wherehavetheteletubbiesgone · 26/10/2020 07:14

Your DH is odd for not doing it. Every one I know does it. I can't sleep in my 10 tog duvet in July.

feelingverylazytoday · 26/10/2020 07:23

I have a 13.5 and a 4.5 tog. When it's very cold I safety pin them together which makes 18 tog, very cosy. The 4.5 is mostly for spring, in the actual summer I just sleep under an empty cover.

BGDino · 26/10/2020 07:34

Yup. Thick fluffy one for winter and thin light one for summer.

Lonecatwithkitten · 26/10/2020 07:44

I spent a long time researching duvets last time I bought. I find manmade fibres cold, but sweaty. Feather clumps over time so you have hot patches and cold spots and it becomes poky.
Wool all the way currently I have one 10.5 tog that is great all year round with a merino blanket on the winter.
We are moving and can have a bigger bed so need new stuff I will have a wool mattress and a wool mattress topper soon.

remaininshroud · 26/10/2020 07:48

YANBU if your bedroom isn't heated.
Mine is very warm in the summer but cold in the winter. I've just switched mine over from summer to winter, otherwise I'd be uncomfortable.

MinnieMountain · 26/10/2020 08:48

I’ve never done it myself but I understand it as being very common.

We have a light wool duvet and a wool blanket on our bed.

woodhill · 26/10/2020 11:53

Winter is 10.5 with a bed throw if needed

LittleTiger007 · 26/10/2020 11:58

This is a totally normal thing to do. Lovely thick warm duvet for the winter and thin, cool one for summer. 👍

peboh · 26/10/2020 11:59

I thought everyone did this? I've always had two duvets from being a kid.

linerforlife · 26/10/2020 12:00

We don't do this. We have one medium weight duvet, and use a flat sheet instead in summer. We live in a new build though with our bedroom at the top floor of 3, and it gets very hot! We would boil under a duvet for most of summer.

LittleTiger007 · 26/10/2020 12:00

He’s obviously just never had this discussion with anyone... why would you? But it is a totally normal thing to do

StanfordPines · 26/10/2020 12:08

Perfectly normal.

Why are there people in here confused by the concept of having the heating on a timer? I thought that was standard too.

I have two, winter and summer. I’m thinking about wool though.

I think it’s weird to Fanny around changing & storing duvets but each to their own

Twice a year, that is all it takes.

Notadramallama · 26/10/2020 12:35

I have a 13.5 tog on all year round - I am a cold person and like being warm when I sleep.

MrsKoala · 26/10/2020 22:07

Where do you all keep your massive winter duvets in the summer? Do you have storage in each room that has a bed or do you have one mammoth cupboard with all the duvets in?

I don’t set my heating to come on in the morning as I wake feeling hot and sick. I just put it on when I get up and 20 mins later the house is warm. 45 mins later it’s bloody roasting and I’m moaning and turning it off again!

TheGreatWave · 26/10/2020 22:29

We keep them in storage bags in the loft.

HeronLanyon · 26/10/2020 22:34

mrskoala in winter my summer is across bottom of bed under blanket. In summer my 13.5 (why are they all.5?!) is cleaned then sometimes put in a vacuum bag - shrinks down to nothing. Needs good air and shake on opening it again. Many summers I actually use my heavy duvet all year tossing it aside for sheet only on hottest of nights.

lynsey91 · 26/10/2020 22:42

We use a 4.5 tog duvet all year round although in the summer it is usually at the end of the bed rather than over us.

We find it keeps us perfectly warm in winter and we don't have the radiator on in our bedroom

nokidshere · 27/10/2020 00:49

We do too. I have the 4.5 tog on my bed and he has the 10.5 tog on his bed all year round. He also has extra blankets on top of his 10.5 tog duvet.

Which is why we don't sleep in the same bed Grin

Halloweiner · 27/10/2020 01:48

We have a 15 tog winter duvet and a 4.5 tog summer duvet. I thought it was the norm.

SuzieQQQ · 27/10/2020 04:39

It’s completely normal. It would be abnormal not to!

Squiffany · 27/10/2020 05:07

@yomellamoHelly

We've always done this, together with blankets. Don't know how one solution would fit all weathers. (Heating on high all night?)
A wool duvet. I love mine as it’s able to regulate a lot better.

We must be abnormal then as we use the same light one all year round. Any heavier and we would be far too hot. We both sleep naked too. Sometimes feel a bit chilly when we get into bed but that's it
BiddyPop · 27/10/2020 09:14

We have a 4.5 and a 9 tog, that snap together to give a 13.5 tog for the depths of winter. And we have a 7 tog intermediate one (which is only king sized - our main duvet is superking) which comes out occasionally.

And even at that, I often end up pulling a single duvet from the spare bed to warm me up while DH is still melting, as the seasons change.

But we like to keep the window open for air as much as possible even in winter, so a cosy bed is important.

StanfordPines · 27/10/2020 13:28

Thanks to this thread I’ve just invested in a wool duvet.
