To have a winter and summer duvet?

My husband thinks it's odd, but it makes perfect sense to me.

I like 4.5 tog for summer and 10.5 for winter.

We've done this for years and he's fine with me changing them, but doesn't understand it as he had never heard of it before meeting me and knows no one else who does it. Am I unusual or is he?

"By the time it's hot enough I'm ok with an empty duvet cover and a blanket. Always cold grin"

If you're adding a blanket then you could do with a summer duvet :)

QueenPaws · 24/10/2020 14:03

@Gwenhwyfar can't afford a wool one sadly! To be honest the amount of days I sleep without my winter duvet is probably about 4 a year
In winter I have a 14 tog wool duvet, wool blanket, patchwork quilt, pjs and thermal socks on Blush

Landlockedinlockdown · 24/10/2020 14:04

Perfectly normal. In fact, DD asked for her cosy duvet to be put back on her bed tonight.
Good job I already have winter and summer duvets as I live in Wales and they are apparently non-essential items now Hmm

raspberryk · 24/10/2020 14:05

I do, but it’s rarely cold enough for our winter one (7.5tog) we keep the summer one (3/4 tog) on all year since my dp moved in anyway and just have a sheet for most of the summer. With heating and a newish build house it isn’t any colder inside our house in the winter than it is in the summer at night. With the exception of the kids room which doesn’t maintain a temperature so they just have an additional blanket they can snuggle in and warmer pyjamas.

thegcatsmother · 24/10/2020 14:05

We have ones that snap together as well - have had them for years. I loved having them on together in the depths of a very cold Belgian winter.

MikeUniformMike · 24/10/2020 14:09

I do, but the 'summer' one is hardly used. I just use a sheet in summer.
I need to get out the winter one as it's a bit cold now.

I usually use the summer one for early autumn and late spring but september was still warm.

Frenchfancy · 24/10/2020 14:11

Normal here, though in winter we add a patchwork quilt on top of the 10 tog.

GreenPlum · 24/10/2020 14:12

I have always had 4.5 & 10.5 duvets. When I was still married, we had two singles on the king size bed for when we wanted different togs!

Elieza · 24/10/2020 14:14

Normal.

I used to have a 7.5 summer and a 10.5 autumn and a 13tog winter.

Now I have a 4.5 tog all year round and a couple of fleeces at the foot of the bed as I am of an age that I seem to be warmer all the time - but at least it’s all the time not those horrible hot flushes I used to have!

I have no partner to complain about the duvet situation, although the cat sometimes says it’s too hot but she is wearing a furry jacket herself so she doesn’t need a duvet over her too! 😻

stargirl1701 · 24/10/2020 14:14

We used to but I switched to a wool filled duvet and no longer need to change it for the season.

eachtigertires · 24/10/2020 14:18

Yes, we do. We live in Ontario so it can be +35 degrees in the summer and -30 in the winter so it would be ridiculous to be using the same blankets/duvets year round.

2bazookas · 24/10/2020 14:21

We've done that for 30 years In winter we have an electric underblanket to warm the bed before we get in.. Also I use seasonal bedlinen; brushed flannel cotton in winter, linen or light cotton in summer. No sweaty polyester or polycotton mixes ever.

ASandwichNamedKevin · 24/10/2020 14:22

How could anyone just have the same tog rating all year?

This. ^

You don't wear the same clothes all year, why would you have the same bedclothes each year.
I also have an electric blanket which will soon be switched on again.

Currently have our normal duvet plus an additional single in the cover to allow for different tog per person.

FreezerBird · 24/10/2020 14:22

Yes.

In winter the summer thin one goes under the bottom sheet as a sort of mattress topper. Super cosy.

QuinionsRainbow · 24/10/2020 18:03

We've had 4.5+9.5 tog quilt combinations for years, although for the last few years we've survived the winter with just the 4.5 tog bit, and in summer generally use a cotton cellular blanket and a flat sheet (or even just the sheet when it's really hot).

I have 2 I like a heavy duvet most of the year. I have a heavy thick one on the mattress too I'm like a custard cream biscuit in winter very cosy.

Trauchled · 24/10/2020 18:20

We have a 4.5 and a 10.5 ,although since I hit the menopause for the last few years I've used the 4.5 tog all year round. We have a cosy throw across the bottom of the bed which DH can use if he feels too cold.

sufur · 24/10/2020 18:24

Thanks all. Knew I wasn't the odd one!

Wannabegreenfingers · 24/10/2020 18:33

Nope, not in this house. I don't freeze in winter or boil in summer, can't even tell you what tog it is!! Where do people store multiple duvets??

barberousbarbara · 24/10/2020 18:37

We have 4.5 and 10.5 Tog duvets.

Ninkanink · 24/10/2020 18:40

We store our extra duvets vacuum packed, under our bed, and in the second bedroom.

Ninkanink · 24/10/2020 18:41

We have a duvet mattress topper as well which we use in the winter. So cosy and comfortable!

NoWordForFluffy · 24/10/2020 18:42

@MatildaTheCat

Well we have both but in reality we’re very rarely use the warmer one, it’s too hot. You can even Velcro them together but the very though makes me want to faint Smile
This is the same as us!
BLASTPROCESSING · 24/10/2020 18:42

I just have A Duvet. I have no idea what tog it is.
