To have a winter and summer duvet?

sufur · 24/10/2020 13:37

My husband thinks it's odd, but it makes perfect sense to me.

I like 4.5 tog for summer and 10.5 for winter.

We've done this for years and he's fine with me changing them, but doesn't understand it as he had never heard of it before meeting me and knows no one else who does it. Am I unusual or is he?

We have 4.5 in sumner and 9.5 fir spring / autumn ( I think ) and attach them together for winter with electric blanket and windows open.

Toasty!

dementedpixie · 24/10/2020 18:47

The spare ones are stored in the person's wardrobe

AllPlayedOut · 24/10/2020 18:48

I put spare duvets in the upstairs cupboard.

CountFosco · 24/10/2020 18:50

Depends where you live. Growing up in the far north we always just had 13.5 tog duvets because it was always cool. If you lived somewhere hot you'd always have a thin blanket. But in England we have two thinner duvets that we use in summer and spring/autumn that then connect together to make a winter duvet. It's pretty standard.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 24/10/2020 18:52

Until we had a memory foam bed we had a 4.5 or just a sheet for Summer.
Winter duvet was 10.5.
Now with the memory foam bed (even though it's one of those cool Max

CountFosco · 24/10/2020 18:55

Having said all that my DDs share a room and DD2 has a 4.5 tog duvet all year round and is always too hot and DD1 has a 13.5 tog duvet plus a blanket all year round and is always cold so some people obviously just run hot or cold and they are less likely to want to change their duvet.

Weebitawks · 24/10/2020 18:56

Well our house is pretty warm so I wouldn't cope with a heavy duvet. I also have the window open all winter at night

Ragwort · 24/10/2020 18:57

We no longer share a bed as DH feels the cold and has a complicated regime of two duvets - one for spring/autumn, one for summer and clipped together for winter Grin. I love my natural duck down duvet which suits me all year round (plus window open!)

TheGreatWave · 24/10/2020 18:58

@pigsDOfly

My duvet has a total tog of 13.5.

It's two combinable duvets: 1 has a tog of 4.5 and the other a tog of 9.

The thinner one I use in the summer and the thicker one is good for autumn.

For the winter they clip together to form the lovely warm one.

How could anyone just have the same tog rating all year?

I have the same, I don't think we used the summer one this year, was never really warm enough.
NaughtipussMaximus · 24/10/2020 18:59

We have a winter one and a summer one. They’re the same tog, but the winter one is a king size, because in summer DH doesn’t need a duvet at all and in winter he selfishly wants to share, so we need a bigger one. It does mean we also need winter and summer bedding but I love bedding so I’m fine with that.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 24/10/2020 18:59

Oop all of my post didn't post!

Until we had a memory foam bed we had a 4.5 or just a sheet for Summer.
Winter duvet was 10.5.
Now with the memory foam bed (even though it's one of those cool max) we have just a 4.5 duvet all year round or just a sheet in the Summer.
I'm also one of those mad people who no keep the window open all year round unless it gets to -10C.
I'm just a hot person who loves the cold.
Though I only like Winter if it's a bright cold day as I love the light.
Spring is my favourite season but I wish it could be light till 10pm all year round. Perhaps I should move to the Southern Hemisphere between October - March Grin

jazzyroll · 24/10/2020 19:00

Absolutely normal. It's weird that people don't have separate summer and winter duvets.

dingledongle · 24/10/2020 19:01

Done this for years, not odd at allConfused

tempnamechange98765 · 24/10/2020 19:01

Until this year I only one duvet that was used for all seasons, not sure what tog.

In the spring/summer I bought summer duvets. I can't believe I was previously sleeping in the summer without a summer duvet, I must've been absolutely insane. Seasonal duvets are the only way forward, and that comes from someone who's crossed over from the other side. YANBU.

emmathedilemma · 24/10/2020 19:02

I have a 4.5 and 9 combo but rarely get below 9, even in the summer!

NannyR · 24/10/2020 19:03

I have a medium weight wool duvet (not sure what tog rating it is as they don't come labelled with a tog value). I use it all year round - when it's very hot, I just use a sheet, when it's very cold, I throw an extra blanket on the bed.

HeronLanyon · 24/10/2020 19:05

I have 13.5 and 4.5. In the winter I use the 4.5 as a ‘runner’ And usually end up with that also. I use my 13.5 most of the year I never have heating on in bedroom - I like a cold room and warm bed.

speakout · 24/10/2020 19:09

Seems reasonable to me OP.

I don't like heating on overnight and in winter months the house can get chilly.
I tend just to double up duvets in winter months, I lose track of bedding, my home has 5 double beds, so in colder times I just stick two light weight duvets in each cover, and everyone has an optional throw/blanket.

PattyPan · 24/10/2020 19:09

Totally normal, we have the same togs as you. When it’s really hot we go down to just a sheet and if it’s really cold then a blanket on top of the duvet as well.

speakout · 24/10/2020 19:14

HeronLanyon

I so agree with your comment of a "cold room and a warm bed".
I like to be warm and cosy when I sleep, but I like to breathe cool air. I rarely use heating in the winter and like a window open. I dislike warm stuffy air. Overheated UK hotel rooms with windows that open just a shave ia nightmare.
I often get hot during sleep, and dont like hot feet, so lovely to stick out a foot or two during the night.
For me a cool room and warm bedding gives flexibility to a fussy sleeper like me!!

catsjammies · 24/10/2020 19:15

It blows my mind that people don't do this! We have a quilt for summer and a 4.5 for wonder tho- amazing insulation.

LimaFoxtrotCharlie · 24/10/2020 19:22

How could anyone just have the same tog rating all year?

We do, don’t know what tog it is, maybe 7.5? In summer, I just stick bits of my body outside the duvet, so arms & legs have no covers.

I think it’s weird to Fanny around changing & storing duvets but each to their own

speakout · 24/10/2020 19:23

Maybe some people keep their house heated to a high level all year, even though the night? So a summer duvet is adequate in January.

Skrqi · 24/10/2020 19:27

I have the same one all year round, 11.5 it's two combined with poppers but I never separate them.

Gwenhwyfar · 24/10/2020 19:28

I doubt many people have the heating on all night. Would be a huge waste of money and energy, unless you had a boiler that took way too much energy to start up every morning I suppose.

It's true that as an adult I haven't felt the need for an electric blanket because if it's cold I heat up the bedroom, or the rooms around the bedroom, before bed.
