To have a winter and summer duvet?

My husband thinks it's odd, but it makes perfect sense to me.

I like 4.5 tog for summer and 10.5 for winter.

We've done this for years and he's fine with me changing them, but doesn't understand it as he had never heard of it before meeting me and knows no one else who does it. Am I unusual or is he?

4.5 tog for the summer and a his and hers for the winter. My side is 14 tog and his side is 10.

We are so much happier now. Thoroughly recommend for those that have different tog requirements but still want to share a bed!

DoTheNextRightThing · 24/10/2020 22:59

I used to, now I just have a heavy blanket I put over the duvet in the winter. Same premise though. It's cold!!

k1233 · 24/10/2020 23:09

I've got a feather doona, which is used all year. I have summer (cotton) and winter (jacquard or brocade) covers for it as well as an inbetween weight (autumn / spring).

NoWordForFluffy · 24/10/2020 23:15

We wash ours in our washing machine (11kg load). Probably twice a year, to time with an overnight trip somewhere. It air dries then gets finished off in the tumble drier.

Audreyseyebrows · 24/10/2020 23:18

I can’t believe people don’t ! Don’t you get hot/cold?
We are still rocking the summer duvet but with a blanket, not cold enough for the winter one yet!

Justgorgeous · 24/10/2020 23:18

We just have a 4.5 all year round. We both get too hot otherwise. No heating on all night.

HappyGirlNow · 24/10/2020 23:19

Surely you regulate the room temperature, so no heating summer, appropriate heating for winter, meaning the one duvet suits both?

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 24/10/2020 23:21

I usually just have my weighted blanket. But ds pinched it.

I only have 1 duvet. If it's hot i just use a duvet cover. If it's freezing i add a blanket. Never have the heating on overnight, and never close my window.

I'm currently in bed with the fan on and just a duvet cover.

Surely you don't have heating on at night when you're in bed under the covers?
TheDowagerDuchessofMwwwahaha · 24/10/2020 23:22

Oh I thought I was weird that I don’t have this!

I basically keep my 13.5 tog on all but the very hottest nights when I just have sheets.

joblessintherain · 24/10/2020 23:26

@Weebitawks

Well our house is pretty warm so I wouldn't cope with a heavy duvet. I also have the window open all winter at night
Maybe you could turn the heating down a bit? Good for the environment and you'd save a bit as well!

I wonder how much do people need to hear about global warming and a fucked up planet to start being a bit more sensible?

HowFastIsTooFast · 24/10/2020 23:31

Makes perfect sense to me. We used to have a 7.5 all year round (with the addition of blankets in winter) but last week bought a big snuggly 10.5 so the 7.5 which is now quite old and flat will be vacuum packed away for next summer.

MayFayre · 24/10/2020 23:33

I have 4.5 tog for summer, 10.5 tog for autumn and spring, 13.5 tog for winter.

saraclara · 24/10/2020 23:35

I have three.

a 4.5 for summer, a 13.5 for winter, and a 10.5 for the in-between seasons.

WishingOnACarrot · 24/10/2020 23:36

We do this. It's normal.

My dh though, if he didn't have me, would sleep under the same tog all year. He doesn't seem to feel hot /cold like other people.

Ninkanink · 24/10/2020 23:51

We wash our duvets after using them, before we pack them away. So each duvet is washed once a year, after having been used for around six months.

Sceptre86 · 24/10/2020 23:53

Yes we do the same.

MountainDweller · 24/10/2020 23:55

Yes have summer and winter duvets - nighttime temperatures vary between -15 and 25! The heating stays on if it drops below a certain temperature in the house. Currently the summer one is still on - I like to 'save' the winter one for when it hits freezing!

ToastyCrumpet · 24/10/2020 23:56

I’ve got both although these days, I’m post-menopause and only use the winter one if it’s below freezing.

Malacath · 25/10/2020 00:29

Absolutely normal to do this. We have a synthetic 4.5 tog duvet for spring/summer and a 4.5 tog down duvet for winter. We tried the 9 tog down one last winter and after a few nights packed it away again as we got too hot (we do have the heating on occasionally over winter as it gets too cold with windows open). The thought of clipping our 4.5 and 9 tog down duvets together makes me want to faint though!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 25/10/2020 00:29

I can’t imagine using a winter duvet in summer. We have a button-together job - a light and a medium, but unless it’s really cold we just use the medium in winter.

Lozz22 · 25/10/2020 00:34

I have a 14 tog all year round. I like the weight on me when I'm asleep. Used to have one of those summer winter ones you pressed together. Think it was used separately for about a month until I needed the space in the wardrobe and I put them both on. Besides the thicker duvet is much more luxurious for thine Kitty to sleep on as well although he has been known to spend the night on the floor of the hallway or the platform of his worn out rock hard scratching post

PolkadotGiraffe · 25/10/2020 00:40

Yep I have the ones that clip together also. I use the thick one in summer, with a light bedspread and weighted blanket on top. In winter both clipped together with two thick bedspreads and a weighted blanket... I get cold and cannot stand light bedsheets. Literally cannot sleep under just sheets like you find in some hotels etc. I love cold, high thread count cotton sheets but the bed itself to be warm and the duvet etc must be heavy in weight. Fussy much! 🤭

pigsDOfly · 25/10/2020 11:18

Surprise to see that people keep their heating on at night in the winter; I assume that these people aren't living in countries with extreme weather conditions.

I'm in my 70s and a very chilly person but I have never felt the need to have the heating on at night, ever.

Your house must be freezing when you wake up in the morning! 🥶
