To have a winter and summer duvet?

My husband thinks it's odd, but it makes perfect sense to me.

I like 4.5 tog for summer and 10.5 for winter.

We've done this for years and he's fine with me changing them, but doesn't understand it as he had never heard of it before meeting me and knows no one else who does it. Am I unusual or is he?

I have a 1 tog duvet for summer and a 4.5 tog for winter. We live in a very well insulated house and the heating goes off every night.

stackemhigh · 25/10/2020 12:22

@pigsDOfly

Surprise to see that people keep their heating on at night in the winter; I assume that these people aren't living in countries with extreme weather conditions.

I'm in my 70s and a very chilly person but I have never felt the need to have the heating on at night, ever.

The heating goes off at 8pm at mine. Even when husband puts it in 10-12 it feels too warm. We live in a relatively new build and neighbours agree it’s too warm when sleeping, maybe the insulation is too effective!
AlwaysLatte · 25/10/2020 12:23

We do, we've also got autumn duvets as well. Not odd at all!

JustGetThroughTheDay · 25/10/2020 12:27

@Ellebelle123

I don't now but years ago I used to have 2 duvets which joined together by press stud / popper things so that in winter you used both and in summer you separated them and only used one.
My mum had the same one!
Redwinestillfine · 25/10/2020 12:29

We have summer, spring/ autumn, and winter. Not unusual at all.

woodhill · 25/10/2020 12:31

Yes I do the same

RichardMarxisinnocent · 25/10/2020 12:38

Your house must be freezing when you wake up in the morning! 🥶

Why would it be? I don't have my heating overnight, but do have it on a timer to come on about 20 minutes before I get up. I assumed that was common? I would boil if I left my heating on all night.

Ninkanink · 25/10/2020 12:59

At the moment we have our heating set to come on around an hour before we get up. It’s perfectly comfortable. In the dead of winter we’ll probably run it for a couple of hours to make enough headway, we’ll have to see as we’ve not lived in this house over the winter yet and it’s an old stone house. We absolutely couldn’t sleep well in a hot, stuffy room.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 25/10/2020 13:04

Of course its normal Hmm - that's why they sell 'four seasons' duvet sets, one thick, one thin that you can also button together.
I nearly always find the two too hot, so never button them together - if it gets really cold I put a separate cover on the summer one, use both for a bit then normally wake up and chuck the summer one off after a couple of hours.

Tyzz · 25/10/2020 13:08

Not only do I have winter and summer duvets, I also have his and hers. When I hit the menopause 10 years ago one of the most helpful things I did was to put two single duvets on our bed. I still get hot at night, even with windows open so he stays warm under 13togs while i have 4 togs in winter and a lovely 1 tog woollen duvet for summer.

YerAWizardHarry · 25/10/2020 13:14

I have heard of it before but we just have on duvet. DP and I run very warm and only have a double bed so we are always roasting hot. We also live in a top floor flat so it never really gets very cold

pigsDOfly · 25/10/2020 13:15

Not at all. My heating comes on at about 30 minutes before I get up and the house has time to warm up.

The heating goes off around midnight, the radiators stay warm for a while longer, and then it comes on again at about 7.30 in the morning.

Bricks hold the heat so the house, even if it's deepest winter and there's thick snow on the ground, never gets freezing cold.

This.
OrangeBananaFish · 25/10/2020 13:28

I have never ever done this. I knew other people did though. Just one duvet all year round. Haven't a clue what tog it is. Just a normal one I assume.

In summer I tend to stick a limb or two out. Never have heating on all night either. I'm not cold when I get in bed in winter. Then will turn heating on in the morning if its cold. Only takes 15 mins or so to warm up.

MiniMum97 · 25/10/2020 20:42

I don't do it but loads of people do. Why does your husband think they sell all season duvets - if there was no demand for different weights in summer and winter they wouldn't sell them.

CrazyFoxLady · 25/10/2020 20:47

You'll all think I'm bonkers. I use a 13.5 tog one all year round. I rarely get too hot in the summer, and if I do, I just kick the lot off. I'd never heard of summer and winter duvets until my MIL said it was a thing!

TheArchFear · 25/10/2020 20:51

We use two duvets (13.5 and 4 tog) year-round and just kick one or both off if it's too hot. Also have an electric blanket. We both have back problems and like to be warm.

Arnoldthecat · 25/10/2020 20:51

i have a winter and summer duvet also..

Kettledodger · 25/10/2020 20:57

Another to say that you are not odd. We have a 5tog summer and a 10.5 winter duvet. DS has a 4.5 summer and a 9 winter duvet + a winter blanket Grin

violetbunny · 26/10/2020 06:16

When I met DP he only had one duvet year round, it was a massive, thick feather duvet. I moved in during summer and swapped it straight away with a lighter duvet. He woke up the next day and said he'd had such a good night sleep as he wasn't hot, I told him I'd swapped the duvet for a summer weight one and he said it had never occurred to him 😂

KatherineJaneway · 26/10/2020 06:17

He is unusual. I have a summer and winter duvet but winter is 13 tog.

SomeoneInTheLaaaaaounge · 26/10/2020 06:33

13.5 winter
4 summer

Makes perfect sense

WitchOfTheWest · 26/10/2020 06:38

We've a 3-in-1 set. Haven't needed to use the set together yet though as we find the thicker duvet is enough! But we change the tog depending on the weather.

Florencex · 26/10/2020 07:02

I have not done it the last few years, but it is perfectly normal to have winter and summer duvets.

HollyGoLoudly1 · 26/10/2020 07:05

I use the same medium weight all year round. It's my pyjamas that change - shorts and vest in summer, full pyjamas and socks in winter. Never have a problem.
