To have a winter and summer duvet?

My husband thinks it's odd, but it makes perfect sense to me.

I like 4.5 tog for summer and 10.5 for winter.

We've done this for years and he's fine with me changing them, but doesn't understand it as he had never heard of it before meeting me and knows no one else who does it. Am I unusual or is he?

We have a thin summer duvet one and a thick winter one and I wouldn't have it any other way - one of the treats of autumn is switching to the lovely thick duvet, which is like sleeping under a cloud

JustBumblingAlong · 24/10/2020 19:32

We have 2 all season duvets - a 4.5 tog and a 9 tog which can clip together if it’s really cold. But as per PP - the thought makes me feel faint!
We still have the 4.5 on now. We have an old house, no heating at night and sleep with the windows open so it’s nearly time to change. We keep the spares in the top of the wardrobe.
We have a double duvet each on a super king bed and it works perfectly for us as we can have different togs if we like, and I can flip mine over to get the cold side in the night Grin

speakout imagine this - wonderful memory as a kid of a snowy night with my window open a bit and a few flakes drifting onto my face. All tucked up - with hot water bottle probably. Absolute bliss. Smile

Many a marriage that's been saved by having a duvet each Grin
One of my friends even has a bed that has been made with different specifications to each side. Firm for her & medium for him.

Maryann1975 · 24/10/2020 19:41

I’m really surprised that people don’t have different duvets for the seasons. I also have different pjs for the season. I’m currently in winter pjs but summer duvet. Very soon will go back to normal pjs and winter duvet, moving back to winter Pyjamas as the nights get really cold.

I find there are quite a few variations, Dh doesn’t get it, but dd1, who is 14, is very in tune to the different levels, although she decided it was cold enough to change her duvet a couple of weeks ago so I snack sleeping in shorts and t shirt as it’s too hot in her bed.

shinynewapple2020 · 24/10/2020 19:42

We have one of these clip together all season duvets. There's 4 tog for summer , 9 for in between and you clip them together for 13 tog when it's cold .

Feellikefrighteningyeah · 24/10/2020 19:43

We have 4.5 in winter and 3 or 1 tog for summer

It’s honestly the best thing for getting a better nights sleep! Should have done it years ago. No more cries of ‘stop wafting!’ DH did say though that it’s only a step away from unzipping the mattresses and pushing the two halves apart. I’ve been tempted...

I have 3 weights - 13.5, 9 and 4 tog rated.

The 9 tog is on the bed most of the year. I swap to the 13.5 tog if it is very cold - didn't use it at all last winter but am contemplating swapping to it when I change the bed next as I am feeling the cold atm. The 4 tog goes on during very hot weather - it didn't get used this summer, instead I used a sheet only on v hot nights.

The children have a multi-season duvet, which is 2 different weights that snap together.

Kseniya · 24/10/2020 19:51

rather, he is not ordinary, this is a matter of habit, perhaps in his family they never did that. For example, I sleep under a thick blanket even in summer (even at sea). my husband opposite

ZolaGrey · 24/10/2020 20:25

13.5 tog all year, electric blanket for winter.

Maybe I don't have any blood?

Toddlerteaplease · 24/10/2020 20:39

I do and when it's really cold, I have both on. It's so toasty. My sister thinks I'm bonkers.

Caterina99 · 24/10/2020 20:54

We have like someone mentioned above a 4 tog and a 9 tog that clip together. However DH gets too hot so we mostly just use the summer one with a fleecy blanket on my side.

Seperate duvets would solve this, and DH would be totally on board, but I don’t want the mess of it. And yet more bedding to wash

VampireVicki · 24/10/2020 20:58

Totally normal.

I feel the cold dreadfully, so I have a 10.5 tog in the summer and 13.5 in the winter. Have always done this and assumed most people switched.

StripeyDeckchair · 24/10/2020 21:04

Summer & winter duvet - i thought everyone did that.
I hate a hot bedroom so the radiator is off but love to snuggle under a warm duvet

Zenithbear · 24/10/2020 21:12

I have wool ones. Lighter one in summer or for heatwaves just a sheet, heavier one spring/autumn and both in winter. No way one tog would be comfortable all year.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 24/10/2020 21:51

Me too. I’d go 15 tog but DH would cook so I keep a throw at the bottom of the bed and have a heated blanket for watching tv with. Occasionally the heating kicks in if the thermostat drops below the night time setting but the children turn theirs down as they like it cooler.
MrsKoala · 24/10/2020 22:03

I have the winter and summer ones in the cupboard but use a 13.5 one all year round apart from the 2 hot weeks a year where we go to a sheet. I’m generally a warm blooded person but I don’t have the heating on in any bedrooms and have windows open as I like a cold room to sleep in and find heating gives me sore throats and headaches. I like to sleep with half my body out of the covers to regulate myself.

My parents do the summer/winter duvet although my dad likes the summer one on all year and the windows closed and radiators blasting so hot I feel dizzy and sick. Confused

stackemhigh · 24/10/2020 22:23

We also have a 10.5 and 4.5 that you can use separately or button together to make 15 tog. Used to make the switch to 10.5 in November but haven’t bothered in current home, gets too warm.

RedRosie · 24/10/2020 22:33

We run hot in this house.

So 3.5 all year round (separate double duvets, king sized bed - one of the secrets of a happy marriage).

YewandOak · 24/10/2020 22:39

Just one duvet here. No idea what tog it is. If I feel cold at night,I just put my electric blanket on. Simpler and less hassle than finding somewhere to store another duvet.

stackemhigh · 24/10/2020 22:48

How often do ppl wash duvets? Kicking myself for not washing it this summer, would have line dried nicely.

dementedpixie · 24/10/2020 22:49

I don't wash duvets tbh

NannyR · 24/10/2020 22:53

I don't wash my duvet either. I've had mine for eight years, it's a wool one, so it's supposed to be naturally anti dust mite/anti microbial.

stackemhigh · 24/10/2020 22:58

Phew, I thought I should be washing it annually at least! It could do with a freshen up. I need one of those washer / dryers outside a supermarket Grin
