AIBU to be really irritated by public nose blowing

Currently at McDonald’s eating my feelings away. Women starts to blow her nose loudly, three large nose blows. Firstly, it’s not a corona issue, it’s just gross at all times to me. She doesn’t appear to have a cold.

I used to work at a place where a guy would blow his nose whilst walking to the photocopier. Really mould nose blow. My colleague who sat next to me had a constant cough and he never used his hand to cover his cough. It was perhaps allergies as it was constant. He also would sniff up his snot constantly.

I find nose blowing in public disgusting. My housemate also blows her nose in the bathroom daily and I can hear it from the front of the house. Ahhhhhhh. Lol.

Obviously I’m sensitive to this noise.

YABU - blowing ya nose loudly in public places is perfectly fine
YANBU - blowing your nose can be done discreetly

What are they supposed to do, wipe their nose on their sleeve or let it flow freely like a snotty 2yr old?

DelphineWalsh · 24/10/2020 10:37

At least they're using a tissue

squashyhat · 24/10/2020 10:38

As opposed to what? Constant sniffing? YABU

HelpMeh · 24/10/2020 10:40

Confused surely you'd rather someone blows their nose than sits there sniffing their snot out of the way every 20 seconds?

Unfortunately my nose doesn't run to a schedule so when it needs blowing it gets blown 🤷‍♀️

PinkiOcelot · 24/10/2020 10:42

What do you suggest they do instead? If you need to blow, you need to blow.

Lockheart · 24/10/2020 10:43

No issue with public nose blowing. Huge issue with loud nose blowing - in any context. It's unecessary.

I had an ex who used to love attempting horn concerto no.2 in the middle of the night when I was trying to sleep.

Florencex · 24/10/2020 10:45

I would find sniffing way more annoying. YABU

lazylinguist · 24/10/2020 10:48

Confused When people need to blow their nose, they need to blow their nose. What harm is it doing to you? There seem to be a lot of people who object to all kinds of perfectly normal things because they are 'sensitive' to them.

Meepmeeep · 24/10/2020 10:52

Saying ‘blowing ya nose’ is far more annoying than a person blowing their nose in my opinion.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 24/10/2020 10:54

I dont like it either

Quite often I go to the loo to blow my nose

nosswith · 24/10/2020 10:55

As long as it is disposed of properly, I prefer this to sniffing constantly.

HowFastIsTooFast · 24/10/2020 10:57

Where do you suggest your housemate blows her nose OP, if the bathroom isn't private enough???

Of course you're being unreasonable. Pray tell what you'd prefer?

makingmammaries · 24/10/2020 11:00

Try a bout of sinusitis, OP, and you’ll see why some people have no choice.

ComDummings · 24/10/2020 11:01

Better than sniffing or hocking it and spitting Envy not envy

Sarahsah4r4 · 24/10/2020 11:04

What is your strategy for managing nasal secretions OP?

Sarahsah4r4 · 24/10/2020 11:05

(Personally I find the idea of eating food from McDonald's just as disgusting as public nose blowing)

IfYouHaveToAsk · 24/10/2020 11:06

Yes you're being completely unreasonable.

BigMC93 · 24/10/2020 11:09

Yes and no. If I'm honest, blowing your nose where people are eating is gross, nobody can argue with that! However, blowing your nose in and office or bathroom, absolutely nothing wrong with that at all.

OHappyDay · 24/10/2020 11:10

I’d rather someone gives their nose a good blow rather than sniffly constantly (that makes me feel sick) or hocking their snot down their throat (terrible!)

JonHammIsMyJamm · 24/10/2020 11:12

Sometimes you need to give a good firm blow. I’d rather just hear/see one big blow than several half-hearted ‘polite’ mini blows that don’t shift it.

SquirrelFan · 24/10/2020 11:13

Don't mind nose-blowing done discreetly but goodness I wish people would wash/sanitise their hands after. A tissue is not magical barrier - if moisture leaks through, then presumably so do the raft of organisms that could cause disease. If your colleague blows his nose on the way to the photocopier and uses it without cleaning his hands, he is being very unreasonable indeed.

throwaway100000 · 24/10/2020 11:17

Personally I would go to a bathroom to do this as I can wash my hands after and ensure there’s somewhere to dispose of the tissue. I don’t often get a runny nose but when I do, I use a nostril spray for relief which is easier to use privately

ShebaShimmyShake · 24/10/2020 11:18

What's your alternative?

Toilenstripes · 24/10/2020 11:20

You should blow discreetly, preferably in the loo so you can wash your hands and check up your nose for any stragglers.

StopMakingATitOfUrselfNPissOff · 24/10/2020 11:21

So you don’t like public nose blowing but you also don’t like your housemate blowing her nose in the bathroom?! Where are people allowed to blow their nose then?
