AIBU to be really irritated by public nose blowing

Currently at McDonald’s eating my feelings away. Women starts to blow her nose loudly, three large nose blows. Firstly, it’s not a corona issue, it’s just gross at all times to me. She doesn’t appear to have a cold.

I used to work at a place where a guy would blow his nose whilst walking to the photocopier. Really mould nose blow. My colleague who sat next to me had a constant cough and he never used his hand to cover his cough. It was perhaps allergies as it was constant. He also would sniff up his snot constantly.

I find nose blowing in public disgusting. My housemate also blows her nose in the bathroom daily and I can hear it from the front of the house. Ahhhhhhh. Lol.

Obviously I’m sensitive to this noise.

YABU - blowing ya nose loudly in public places is perfectly fine
YANBU - blowing your nose can be done discreetly

surprisebabyshower would you ever blow your nose in a restaurant/office/not your own space unless you really had to?

I go into the bathroom to blow my nose unless I'm on my own at home.

Sparticuscaticus · 24/10/2020 12:39

I think we are all over sensitive now to these things, because of corona

It's very difficult as some people suffer sinus problems, respiratory (COPD/ asthma) related coughs and catch colds a lot. We used to be tolerant of others and less so now.

When you think about it, it does sound gross but it was better to blow well, than to sniff and snotty sneeze ... To be Covid safe she should have gone to use hand sanitizer which they have at edge of Mac Donald's entrance but probably didn't want to lose her place in queue.

Ugh we are going to be hyper aware for years now of what we never noticed before ...

Gwenhwyfar · 24/10/2020 12:43

Spart - OP said her problem pre-dates Covid. She has an 'issue' with it and it's her own problem.

VirginiaWolverine · 24/10/2020 13:03

I have a 5 hour shift with no breaks. No way would I call a manager to cover me every time I needed to blow my nose.

namechangefail2020 · 24/10/2020 13:04

You are wrong but I am exactly the same. It's irrational but we can't help it Grin

Yohoheaveho · 24/10/2020 13:10

I think the mouth and nose will become new 'private areas' which have to be kept covered, already when I see someone wearing a mask with their nose hanging out of it I am reminded of the cartoon of men's underpants with the penis hanging out😳
(Not in any kind of a good way you understand 😶)

Casschops · 24/10/2020 13:18

I might just let all the snot run down my face and see how you like that then.

BigMC93 · 24/10/2020 13:46

@Gwenhwyfar

"You don't have to blow it into someones food for them to get grossed out by it, the noise alone is enough."

That's your problem though.

Wow 😂😂

Wee bit of consideration goes a long way. Just because it's not your problem, doesn't mean you can do as you please regardless of other peoples feelings lol

BigBadVoodooHat · 24/10/2020 13:50

She doesn’t appear to have a cold.

She's doing it just for fun then, is she?

Gwenhwyfar · 24/10/2020 13:53

"Just because it's not your problem, doesn't mean you can do as you please regardless of other peoples feelings lol"

I can bloody well blow my nose if I need to! Why don't you show some consideration?

I don't like seeing people eat fruit in public. I know it's my problem. I don't expect people not to do it.

Gwenhwyfar · 24/10/2020 13:54

Big - do you really expect people never to blow their nose in front of you? And how are people to know when there is someone with this issue around?

BigMC93 · 24/10/2020 13:57

Not the same at all.....
BigMC93 · 24/10/2020 13:59

Also, I don't have an issue with people blowing their noses in public. However, if I were sitting at a dinner table and someone started blowing their nose I would be quickly put off my food.

Georgeoftheinternet · 24/10/2020 14:21

@Sparticuscaticus I have always thought it’s gross to blow your nose, fart and burp in public.

OP posts:
LavaCake · 24/10/2020 14:23

It’s much better than endless sniffing!

contrmary · 24/10/2020 14:27

No doubt the OP dislikes public breast-feeding too. After all it can be off-putting to some people, involves the natural movement of bodily fluids, and the people doing it "can step away from others to blow their nose, go to the corridor, try and be discreet about it."

yelyah22 · 24/10/2020 14:29

I HATE other people's noise too, OP - I'm really sensitive to it - so I completely get the red mist that descends when someone is snotting/coughing/popping chewing gum(/breathing, on my worse days!).

But as a person with chronic sinusitis, I'm afraid I can't help it. I try and remember that when I'm feeling like I'm about to lose my shit!

Georgeoftheinternet · 24/10/2020 14:32

@contrmary omfg bloody breast feeding, another post suggesting that other people have an issue with it when I’ve seen no one ever say anything negative above it.

Ffs.

There is a huge difference with someone making a fog horn nose which means that stuff comes out of their nose at a rapid pace and can suggest illness, compared to a mother nursing. Clearly.

Can I fart around you, after all it’s just air. Can I burp around you, after all it’s just air. Can I pick my nose in front of you, after all it’s just snot. Can I piss in a bucket in front of you, after all it’s just piss. Can I masturbate in front of you,

Enjoying your meal and having someone have a big fog horn from their nose can be prevented. When I’m ill I always go to the toilet so I can make as much noise as possible.

People don’t like to hear the noise because it does signal that someone is unwell.

OP posts:
Georgeoftheinternet · 24/10/2020 14:33

@yelyah22 haha I don’t have the issue with popping bubbles.

Imagine my tolerance of being at work with someone with chronic sinus issues. Agh drove me crazy.

OP posts:
Georgeoftheinternet · 24/10/2020 14:34

@BigMC93 yes she did it at McDonald’s...

OP posts:
Ingridla · 24/10/2020 14:41

YABVU. what the hell do you expect people to do, allow their noses to run down their faces and tickle their nostrils like a Japanese pow torture method Hmm

Goldenbear · 24/10/2020 15:04

I agree with you OP and think it is impolite, particularly in a restaurant. A person in a cafe/restaurant can easily go to the loo, that would be the considerate thing to do. I disagree that it is better than sniffing, they are as bad as each other.

VirginiaWolverine · 24/10/2020 16:02

But if you have a runny nose, you need you blow it frequently. Should the diner with allergies, or a slight cold, or chronic rhinitis just not eat out? Or get up and go the loo every couple of minutes, annoying the other diners and waiters? Or go to the loo after the first sniffle and stay there, texting their companions to let them know they have a runny nose and can't leave the loo, and asking if their meal could maybe be packaged up to take home?

Georgeoftheinternet · 24/10/2020 16:05

She was blowing her nose whilst sitting in front of her mate and talking away.

No reason why she couldn’t have walked away from the area her friend and I were dining and stepped outside.

It’s also corona times.

OP posts:
Georgeoftheinternet · 24/10/2020 16:06

@VirginiaWolverine they can be more polite than make a fog horn sounding nose. They can take something to stop the running nose. They can at least try and be discreet.

I’m yet to meet anyone that needs to leave every few minutes to blow their nose. If so they should perhaps consider a nose tampon
