AIBU to be really irritated by public nose blowing

Currently at McDonald’s eating my feelings away. Women starts to blow her nose loudly, three large nose blows. Firstly, it’s not a corona issue, it’s just gross at all times to me. She doesn’t appear to have a cold.

I used to work at a place where a guy would blow his nose whilst walking to the photocopier. Really mould nose blow. My colleague who sat next to me had a constant cough and he never used his hand to cover his cough. It was perhaps allergies as it was constant. He also would sniff up his snot constantly.

I find nose blowing in public disgusting. My housemate also blows her nose in the bathroom daily and I can hear it from the front of the house. Ahhhhhhh. Lol.

Obviously I’m sensitive to this noise.

YABU - blowing ya nose loudly in public places is perfectly fine
YANBU - blowing your nose can be done discreetly

YABU, as others have already pointed out.

If I have a slight cold, or I've been affected by an allergy trigger like dust or strong perfume,* my nose needs blowing frequently otherwise it will literally drip on the floor/desk/whatever. It's really not possible to go to the loo every time, or nobody else will ever be able to use it and I will get so little done I might as well stay housebound.

And no, I can't even blow my nose quietly really. Doing it quietly does little more than wiping my nose. I suppose it's just the way my sinuses are constructed: any nose blow that's powerful enough to be effective is audible. I don't take the piss though. I'm not playing a horn concerto....

*Don't get me started on this. I went out for dinner to a real "treat level" restaurant on my last birthday, and actually had to leave after my main course because a woman on the next table had so much scent on. I had planned to stay for a pudding, cheeseboard, glass of port, coffee amd petits fours! What's the point in dousing yourself in so much fragrance when you're going to pay loads of money for an aesthetic experience where the sense of smell should play such a big part?

Redcrayons · 24/10/2020 11:21

YABU as Otherwise they’d be sniffing. Excessive sniffing will get you sent to the tower when I’m queen if the world.

Palavah · 24/10/2020 11:22

YABVU.

Constant sniffing, using a sleeve, or hoiking is gross and irritating. Blow your nose, be done.

I'd prefer to blow my nose in the loo or somewhere discreet and then eash my hands, but needs must.

FuckKnowsMate · 24/10/2020 11:24

YABU op but I also hate hearing people blow their nose or sniff up, it is irrational as there’s not really other alternatives. You just have to put up with it. It is gross though 😂

DeciduousPerennial · 24/10/2020 11:27

Look up misophonia

Frdd · 24/10/2020 11:28

What do you expect them to do?

Sparklesocks · 24/10/2020 11:30

It’s not the most pleasant noise but it’s also usually very quick so I don’t mind. And better than someone sniffing or having snot on their face.

LindaEllen · 24/10/2020 11:34

Of course YABU. How are people supposed to time their nose blowing when they have no control over whatever builds up in there?

It's all very well saying they could just wipe it, or do it quietly, but the problem is they're probably not getting rid of it all then, so they'll just have to do it even sooner the next time.

VirginiaWolverine · 24/10/2020 11:35

I'm not really sure what you expect people to do instead - take sick leave and check into some sort of runny nose isolation facility at the first sign of a cold or allergy? Wear some sort of yet-to-be-invented nostril /tampons?

Gwenhwyfar · 24/10/2020 11:38

@BigMC93

Yes and no. If I'm honest, blowing your nose where people are eating is gross, nobody can argue with that! However, blowing your nose in and office or bathroom, absolutely nothing wrong with that at all.
She wasn't doing it near other people's food! Ridiculous complaint.
marveloustimeruiningeverything · 24/10/2020 11:38

Hilarious. Are people never supposed to blow their nose then?

Gwenhwyfar · 24/10/2020 11:39

Maybe move to Japan or something? I've heard they don't do public nose blowing.
Not sure what you would do about any housemate though.

indecisivequeeen · 24/10/2020 11:39

You are definitely being very unreasonable. What would you suggest? If I have a cold my nose needs blowing very frequently and if I'm at work it really isn't appropriate for me to go to the toilet Everytime as (like pp said) nobody else would be able to use it and I would be there constantly. I used to be really embarrassed blowing my nose in front of people and remember when I first met DP I had a strong cold and sent him out to the shop just so I could have a big blow in private, now I don't care it needs blowing I can't keep it held in.

Georgeoftheinternet · 24/10/2020 11:42

People can step away from others to blow their nose, go to the corridor, try and be discreet about it?

OP posts:
StripeyDeckchair · 24/10/2020 11:52

What do you want people to do?
Sniff?
Snot everywhere?
Drip?

Blowing your nose using a tissue, which you then dispose of, is the most hygienic thing you can do.
Sneezing into your elbow ie onto your clothes, is gross.

BigMC93 · 24/10/2020 11:57

I understand that, but hearing it whilst eating is disgusting. You don't have to blow it into someones food for them to get grossed out by it, the noise alone is enough.

wowfudge · 24/10/2020 11:59

Your housemate is being discreet, but you're still objecting.

I would rather hear a thousand nose blows than one disgusting sniff. Sniffing instead of blowing your nose is revolting.

MikeUniformMike · 24/10/2020 12:02

Nah, they should sniff really hard then clear their throat and spit.

[;-)]

Georgeoftheinternet · 24/10/2020 12:03

@wowfudge I’m not objecting to her doing it. I just don’t know why it’s so loud. She’s doing it in her own space, I just really hate the noise.

OP posts:
wowfudge · 24/10/2020 12:06

I still think YABU. Try earplugs or noise cancelling headphones.

surprisebabyshower · 24/10/2020 12:08

I hate hearing people blow their nose or chew. It makes me feel angry and disgusted at the same time. I realise it's my issue but I can't help my reaction to it.

IamMaz · 24/10/2020 12:14

There are some things you just have to tolerate, OP.

I told my now DH before we were married, that I HATE people picking their teeth or biting their nails. He does bloody BOTH and has done for more than 30 years. I BLOODY HATE IT!!! And he knows...

And we have a good friend who constantly BURPS - which I also hate. And he bites his nails too... I try to think of something else to distract me or make an excuse to go and fetch something...

Georgeoftheinternet · 24/10/2020 12:15

@surprisebabyshower would you ever blow your nose in a restaurant/office/not your own space unless you really had to?

OP posts:
Georgeoftheinternet · 24/10/2020 12:27

.@IamMaz with that attitude people will be farting and we will have to turn the other cheek

OP posts:
Gwenhwyfar · 24/10/2020 12:32

"You don't have to blow it into someones food for them to get grossed out by it, the noise alone is enough."

That's your problem though.
