I’m such an idiot!!!
I’m a seller on Etsy and have posted out an order today (a gift box that a woman ordered for her friend).
She wanted a gift message included.
I’ve just been looking at her order again and realised she wanted her name “Grainne” on it but I remember I wrote “Love Granny” on it.
I don’t know how this happened as I’m normally extremely careful with all the little details. The order has been posted out now so there’s nothing I can do. The friend will receive it and be really confused as to who sent it.
I feel awful that I’ve probably ruined the surprise and will now likely receive a bad review too.
Should I email the customer to warn her and profusely apologise (and maybe offer a refund or a replacement?)
Or should I say nothing and see what happens?
:-(

Send a note by 1st class post explaining your mistake with a new gift card. Add a small token gift to say sorry. I’m sure the recipient will be understanding and have a chuckle!

Morgana7 · 21/10/2020 20:37

It’s already been sorted if you read back a page or so. She found it funny x

I'm really glad it's sorted. It made me snorty chortle, though and I really needed that! X

murakamilove · 21/10/2020 21:00

You sound lovely OP- be honest & ask the customer how to make it up to them?

VodselForDinner · 21/10/2020 21:02

Definitely cancel the cheque.

Iamthedevilinthedetail · 21/10/2020 21:02

I'm imaging it's not the first time she's had that, but as someone with pride in their job, I'd email, apologise and offer partial refund.

tartantroosers · 21/10/2020 21:06

It's cool. And. very funny! They will dine out on this :-)

FredaFrogspawn · 21/10/2020 21:08

Oh dear god... ‘Quackie’ !!

So funny!

masterchef98 · 21/10/2020 21:09

I think you handled it perfectly by apologising as soon as you realised and being prepared to compensate if the mistake had caused any offence or concern. I always think that mistakes happen but how a company (individual I guess on etsy) deals with it speaks volumes and a mistake with a proper apology and compensation if needed will stick in my mind positively more than an order that went right!

FredaFrogspawn · 21/10/2020 21:09

Happened to a friend who said ‘Marc with a C’ in Starbucks and got a coffee with ‘Cark’ written on it.

RLABC · 21/10/2020 21:17

OP, send out a note saying "PLEASE RTFT!" Grin

I'm not sure if this is against MN rules but is there any chance that you could provide a link to your etsy business please? You sound like such a lovely, conscience businesswoman and I'd be interested to have a look Smile

P. S.
Tell your husband to keep his beak out of your business Grin

Mirinska · 21/10/2020 21:25

Send another card to the recipient with the correct message, an apology and an explanation ideally by express delivery would correct the mistake at the earliest possible opportunity which is all you can reasonably do. Then email the buyer to apologise and explain that the mistake has been instantly corrected and offer a 10 pound voucher by way of a good Will gesture. If the6 accept it then post a bad reference you have some come back but they’ll probably be human about it if you’ve already sorted it out and grateful for the compensation.

RedHotChiliChips · 21/10/2020 21:49

I do not understand it when people rush to comment without reading the comments, or some of them at least first.

OP Glad she was good humoured about it!

For those saying offer refund, £10 off etc. In general most Etsy sellers are small businesses, if not tiny micro businesses who already struggle with their tiny profit marging, trying to compete with chinese sellers etc. There is no need to refund as the product itself was as described. Gift message is just a free add on service on top and that’s where op made a mistake.

NewRoadToHappinessxx · 21/10/2020 22:55

In all honesty she probably gets the same thing done over and over it probably spell checks to granny! X

ninka68 · 21/10/2020 23:00

Good lord! There's a Covid epidemic and we're worried about this! Just send a message to say "Sorry, my brain was scrambled and it should have been Grainne not Granny!" Surely she will find it funny even if poor Granny is no longer with us! Lighten up people, who cares? Really?

TheHighwayman · 21/10/2020 23:05

This made me chuckle OP, I'm sorry! But in all seriousness everyone makes mistakes - in this instance I would contact the customer straightaway and be upfront.
They will be annoyed but I guess you could offer some money back?
To be honest OP if I'd have been your customer this would have made me giggle but not everyone has my immature sense of humour Grin

Bairnsmum05 · 21/10/2020 23:09

I knew a Graine in Glasgow and I pronounced it properly as other posters have explained only to be told she pronounced it Grain Confused

StayCloseSpooky · 21/10/2020 23:29

I just woke the baby up laughing at Quackie

Danja2010 · 21/10/2020 23:41

I am sure this is not the first time ! Can almost guarantee it. Send an apology with a smack thank you gift to both.

Zyzxyz · 22/10/2020 00:24

We all make mistakes. Stop beating yourself up over it. Apologize and try to rectify the mistake you made but don't dwell on it. The world will continue to turn and the sun will continue to shine provided we aren't hit by a gigantic asteroid a day before U.S. elections.

Kidsgrownup · 22/10/2020 00:42

Is there any way you can fast track another delivery so it gets there before the original delivery?

That's a very good idea. But a short apology and explanation with a small gift to make up would be nice. Most people understand that mistakes happen and they aren't deliberate. Having it put right creates good will, and hopefully a good review.

luluw41 · 22/10/2020 03:51

I’d just pop a new gift card with the correct name on it in the post ASAP and explain that the first was sent mistakenly. It’s no biggie - don’t worry!

sue20 · 22/10/2020 05:27

Might not be a granny in existence!! Mistakes happen. Contact customer and send immediate correction note to recipient. Offer a free something. Not that terrible!!!

RLABC · 22/10/2020 05:28

Danja2010

Send an apology with a smack thank you gift to both

I'm not sure you can send drugs through the post.... Grin

jwpetal · 22/10/2020 09:53

Just to say that you are not an idiot. You mad a mistake and well done for contacting her. Not just a thicker skin but be kind to yourself.
