I’m such an idiot!!!
I’m a seller on Etsy and have posted out an order today (a gift box that a woman ordered for her friend).
She wanted a gift message included.
I’ve just been looking at her order again and realised she wanted her name “Grainne” on it but I remember I wrote “Love Granny” on it.
I don’t know how this happened as I’m normally extremely careful with all the little details. The order has been posted out now so there’s nothing I can do. The friend will receive it and be really confused as to who sent it.
I feel awful that I’ve probably ruined the surprise and will now likely receive a bad review too.
Should I email the customer to warn her and profusely apologise (and maybe offer a refund or a replacement?)
Or should I say nothing and see what happens?
:-(

I think the right thing to do would be honest and upfront about it, and replace it ASAP with the correct order.

MikeUniformMike · 20/10/2020 17:46

I'd be a bit pissed off if I were the customer.

Morgana7 · 20/10/2020 17:46

The order was correct, just not the gift message. I think you’re right though and I should let her know. Thank you

VaggieMight · 20/10/2020 17:47

Is it inscribed with love granny?

Morgana7 · 20/10/2020 17:49

No it’s a gift box of treats and a handwritten gift message on a card to say who it’s from. Instead of Love from Grainne it says Love from Granny :-(

The recipient will probably thank his or her grandmother profusely, and she will assume it is some passive-aggressive dig at her. The whole family will argue about it and go NC. All because of your lack of attention to deail.

MikeUniformMike · 20/10/2020 17:49

Detail even.

ChocoholicMama · 20/10/2020 17:50

Send a postcard/letter asap to the address apologising and explaining that there was an error on the gift card with the item and include the correct gift card wording on there. Include details of your business so they know which gift it applies to in case they've received multiple.

ItWasntMyFault · 20/10/2020 17:51

Is it just me that thinks this is actually quite funny?
As long as you warn the customer they will probably find it hilarious

MonkeySnake · 20/10/2020 17:52

Email the customer and refund them. Send a follow-up card to the address stating the error and apologise.

SurferRona · 20/10/2020 17:52

You definitely need to contact the customer and apologise!

I'm 99% certain they'll find it funny and Grainne is going to be called Granny by her friend for the rest of eternity.
Morgana7 · 20/10/2020 17:53

Do you think I should just profusely apologise or go further and offer a refund/replacement box too? My DP is saying I shouldn’t do anything and wait to see if they contact me about it and then go from there. I feel like I should really let the customer know though

Morgana7 · 20/10/2020 17:54

Going to email her now. Hopefully she won’t be furious and I can rectify it for her

BananaFlavouredPancakes · 20/10/2020 17:55

@ItWasntMyFault I agree, I'd be in stitches over this!!

@Morgana7 hope your customer sees the funny side, I would apologise and offer a partial refund at most if they don't but I don't think you should have to refund the whole thing surely!!

ChalkDinosaur · 20/10/2020 17:55

Email the customer and see what she wants to do. Personally I wouldn't really care, I could just warn my friend.

How much was the item? I suppose you have to offer a refund really but if it's expensive I'd be more tempted to offer a partial refund/send a little extra gift instead. I don't think a mistake on the gift message necessarily warrants a full refund.

Nonamesavail · 20/10/2020 17:56

Fingers crossed. I'd be amused too.

UserABCDE12345 · 20/10/2020 17:57

I'd send an apologetic email then go from there tbh. The present was still right so I wouldn't offer a refund.

Morgana7 · 20/10/2020 17:58

It cost her £22 (including 1st class p&p)

Oh god I'm kind of laughing but it's not really funny Blush I'd contact the buyer and explain as you just never know how the person will receive it, imagine if she has just buried her grandmother....

I had bought a hamper one year for a family member, they are an alcoholic, I fell out with them over their illness and after a long time of not talking we made up, I sent an afternoon tea hamper and they got it wrong and sent a wine hamper BlushBlush still to this day my family member has not spoken to me and the sellers actually laughed wanting to know why I was upset as she got a more expensive hamper Hmm

Offer a small token by way of apology.

Crazyhorses123 · 20/10/2020 18:00

I'd apologise and refund, that way you'll get a good review and you'll have a happy customer.

Blueberries0112 · 20/10/2020 18:00

Yes email her and apologize to the person the gift being sent with a postcard too

And perhaps give her a voucher for another another I rder she might want to order

If she get mad, let her

LavenderBucket · 20/10/2020 18:02

Is there any way you can fast track another delivery so it gets there before the original delivery?

ForTheLoveOfDoughtnuts · 20/10/2020 18:03

If it was me receiving it or sending it, I wouldn't be fussed. But I'd be grateful that you were upfront and honest about it.
