I’m such an idiot!!!
I’m a seller on Etsy and have posted out an order today (a gift box that a woman ordered for her friend).
She wanted a gift message included.
I’ve just been looking at her order again and realised she wanted her name “Grainne” on it but I remember I wrote “Love Granny” on it.
I don’t know how this happened as I’m normally extremely careful with all the little details. The order has been posted out now so there’s nothing I can do. The friend will receive it and be really confused as to who sent it.
I feel awful that I’ve probably ruined the surprise and will now likely receive a bad review too.
Should I email the customer to warn her and profusely apologise (and maybe offer a refund or a replacement?)
Or should I say nothing and see what happens?
:-(

Are you from Norn Iron too?🤣 I can’t believe how uptight posters are getting over this! It’s not as if the items are engraved. They might be confused, she might roll her eyes, but if she gets her knickers in a twist, she’s not from here. 😁
Fink · 20/10/2020 19:57

If you're not also based in Ireland, she'll probably just think it's just another example of English ignorance Grin

Seriously, though, I would have offered a partial refund immediately (say 15%) and then more if she wasn't happy.

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 20/10/2020 19:57

OP - people usually respond well to a heartfelt apology and people taking responsibility for their mistakes.

I think an upfront apology and an offer of an additional 'sorry' gift will be v sweet, you don't need to re-do the whole box.

I would be irritated if someone got the note wrong and I discovered it first, but if the sender put their hands up and admitted the mistake I would accept their apology with grace and no hard feelings.

Fingers crossed your customer is reasonable. She is kind enough to send her ill friend a present, so she probably is Smile

RedHotChiliChips · 20/10/2020 19:58

As I already said, pls do not refund!! There is no need for it at all. I hate this compo culture Angry Etsy gives an option for customer to add a gift message which is a free service. Mistakes happen, no one bloody died. Sometimes little perspective is needed.

You might feel it’s burning you but there is no need to refund and be out of pocket yourself. In years to come you’ll have akward customers and you will also make an occasional mistake. Thicker skin is needed. I also promise you won’t feel so bad about this after a day or two.

MillieVanilla · 20/10/2020 19:59

Irish names op, you won't be the first.
DDs name can be spelt multiple ways

Each and every one of her 3 aunts and her uncle always, without fail, spell it wrong

Which is quite an achievement, as she's named after their mother...

VodselForDinner · 20/10/2020 20:00

I hope Grainne wasn’t sending it as a gift to cheer up her friend who has recently lost her granny Shock

FedUpWithBriiiiick · 20/10/2020 20:00

Aye @DeliciouslyFemale. For sure if she hasn't laughed her arse off, then she ain't from round these parts.

AngelaScandal · 20/10/2020 20:01

@MillieVanilla that is hilarious

DeliciouslyFemale · 20/10/2020 20:01

@tara66

Just leave it. Why do people not just have simple names? They should expect this kind of thing - which probably happens all the time.
Holy fuck, you really are showing your ignorance! How’s that little white English (I assume) bubble, you’re living in?
SunshineCake · 20/10/2020 20:01

I'd send the correct tag to the recipient then.

DeliciouslyFemale · 20/10/2020 20:02

@VodselForDinner the friend receiving it is unwell as the gift message also said “hope you get well soon”

I once ordered a mail order gift over the phone and told the lady my friend's name was "Jacqui but spelled with a q..u" (ie, to differentiate her from being a Jackie-type Jackie). The lovely present duly arrived addressed to 'Quackie'. My friend and I still laugh about it years later.

Then a good laugh is what she’ll need and hopefully she’ll have it, now that she’s received a gift from her Irish granny.

babysnowman · 20/10/2020 20:04

I think all you need to do is message the customer and apologise. If I was Grainne I would find it funny!

That quackie story is hilarious Grin

I am sure it will be absolutely fine.
Everyone makes mistakes and the fact that you were honest and genuinely sorry would make it all fine to me.

Teirsforfears · 20/10/2020 20:06

Replace it with the correct name and apologise profusely and offer a refund.

RedHotChiliChips · 20/10/2020 20:09

Frisky GrinGrin

The gift message service at Etsy doesn’t specify it’ll be hand written on a gift tag. It’s up to the seller how it is enclosed. Many sellers just print the gift receipt which automatically includes the message. Some sellers chooses to hand write them but it’s up to them.

@tara66

Wow are you a racist or just not very clever? It is an Irish name so in Ireland it is a simple name.

CantBeAssed · 20/10/2020 20:10

What @DeliciouslyFemale said....if from Norn IronGrin she should find this very amusing...no snowflakes in this neck of the woodsWink

DeliciouslyFemale · 20/10/2020 20:10

My student identify card had my name spelled wrongly and didn’t notice until someone remarked on what an usual spelling it was. I was an absolute nervous wreak, as a country girl, just moving to the city, so unfortunately hadn’t realised when I filled in the firm that I had spelled MY OWN NAME wrongly. 😳

Cccc1111 · 20/10/2020 20:10

I think the friend will figure out who it was from and just think the seller was being ignorant. I used to work opposite someone called Grainne, and the amount of times she got called granny or grainy was insane. If it wasn’t inscribed on the box, and just written on the gift card I wouldn’t replace it. Maybe apologise profusely and offer to refund a portion of the purchase price.

Salamander91 · 20/10/2020 20:11

It was an honest mistake. If she's anything like the NI people I know she'll find it funny and probably very used to it!

My SIL once ordered a personalised dummy clip for her DD Orlaith and got a message back to say they only had English letters Grin
