Mystified by tiny gussets. Is there - is there something wrong with my undercarriage?

Never been able to understand how anyone could bear to wear thong-type pants. I've always just thought -surely they must ride up and get into - the bit you don't want interfered with by your clothing??? Never understood it.

Anyhow, I sent for some M&S pants. Look like normal pants. Nice soft fabric. Comfy. Put them on, head out for the day. And -- oh dear, turns out they have a mystifyingly narrow gusset with the consequences I would think were entirely predictable. Not comfy after all! Much hitching down required Grin And there wasn't even a warning!!!

Just - why?

Have I got a weird-shaped fanny? Is it unusually lacking in firmness? Is it in the wrong place?? How does anyone wear these things??

This conversation is reminding me a lot of this comic Grin

TkMaxx midi sports style knickers. I've some Tokyo Laundry and Ellesse ones and they're really comfy, decent gusset and ample coverage.

TheFormerChild · 20/10/2020 13:22

Try Wirapa knickers from Amazon - £19.99 for four. Full briefs but they don't have high legs, more Liza Minnelli in Cabaret. The gussets are perfect (yes, I did type that).

Zilla1 · 20/10/2020 13:23

Perhaps some messages to the Chief Executive of M and S (Steve Rowe?) might be helpful, suggesting that they involve some women in the design or quality review of the design of these products as it would appear no women have been involved (presumably the majority of purchasers are women unless these are a St Valentine's Day fail purchase). He might draw the link to the relative performance of their non-food offering.

Sunnydaysstillhere · 20/10/2020 13:23

They were designed especially with Covid in mind... Keeps your flaps socially distanced. One wedged to the left and one to the right... Gusset in-between..

ovener · 20/10/2020 13:24

Re. the gusset position, I find when I'm pregnant my belly shifts everything and the gusset becomes too far back. Maybe the answer is pants that are lower cut at the front if you have any sort of belly, as most people do. I would suggest maternity ones but they're so much more expensive!

catmumof1 · 20/10/2020 13:24

Recently switched from Victorias Secret to Oddballs pants because of lockdown, nowhere near as glam or pretty but their seamless are so comfortable and the gusset is fixed rather than barely attached to the pants. As with PP period pants are such a treat to wear when it's time but I cant bring myself to wear them all month at £30 a pop I don't want to wear them out...

CoolYourBeansMySon · 20/10/2020 13:25

@LavenderBucket

The gusset to sanitary pad ratio is completely off. I reckon knicker makers should get together with sanitary pad makers and work through their measurements. Maybe meet in the middle....
I have to wear sanitary towels back to front otherwise I leak. What with this and the gusset issue I was thinking my fanny was in the wrong place.
bonbonours · 20/10/2020 13:26

See, I wear thongs because I find them more comfy. The bit going up your bum is only tiny so you can't feel it. Every single pair of "big pants" I have ever tried, still goes up my bum, and it's loads of extra material so more uncomfy. I've tried going bigger but all that you get is more material at the front, not over the bum. I don't want my pants to cover my whole tummy up to my bra, I just want them to cover my bum, that shouldn't be too much to ask!

justasking111 · 20/10/2020 13:27

maybe the chinese have their fannies in a different place?

JuiceyBetty · 20/10/2020 13:28

I completely agree with the posters saying the gusset is al2ays in the wrong place, it’s basically under my bum hole.

nixso29 · 20/10/2020 13:28

I read this as tiny guests instead of tiny gussets 😂😂😂😂

pinkyboots1 · 20/10/2020 13:29

@MilkTwoSugarsThanks Definitely go for the teen brands on Amazon .. my very petite teen swears by them and has managed to convince half her friends to use them too... I should be on commission

funnelfanjo · 20/10/2020 13:35

@Marcipex

I always think that the double-thickness bit is in the wrong place 🤔
Me too - I changed my username on the strength of a previous thread on this issue.

amusedbush · 20/10/2020 13:36

Yes, the double layer gusset bit is wayyy too far back for my anatomy. My friend and I were lamenting this recently.

lekkerkroketje · 20/10/2020 13:37

I bought a pack of these men's pants recently. Oh, the revelation! Pretty but not sexy, can be hot washed because no lace, no lace on groin rub, no pant lines, massive gusset, and best it absorbs the sweat that collects under your arse cheeks in a heat wave, so no more chub rub there! Why do men get so much better pants?!

Oh, and the model's quite good looking too Wink

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 20/10/2020 13:37

I need enough front on knickers that they don’t just ping down into my caesarean scar. This means full briefs, grr. M&S design all their other knickers to sit really low in front because obviously all women want knickers that barely clear their pubes.

KiposWonderbeasts · 20/10/2020 13:37

@CoolYourBeansMySon Me too!

But that sometimes means the wings aren't in the right place and I get and involunatry waxing from time to time.

frewer · 20/10/2020 13:41

funnelfanjo I was on that thread, what an eye opener. Nothing's changed though because we still buy what's available.

AldiAisleofCrap · 20/10/2020 13:43

I have to wear two pairs of extra long pads together I am not fat but I am tall.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 20/10/2020 13:43

I stopped buying M&S about three years ago. The knickers were paper thin, the gusset was both narrow and thin (so it basically disappeared and rode up) and the elastic around the waist was a token effort.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 20/10/2020 13:45

Try these high leg ones from Matalan. Comfy, traditional & quite pretty. Elasticated legs.

www.matalan.co.uk/product/detail/s2763173_c47q/5-pack-lace-trim-high-leg-knickers-multi

Back in the day I once tried on a pair of DH's briefs/'slips' as M&S called them then. No handy access, just a bit more substantial than women's knickers. If anyone still makes those, they might be worth a try. DH has moved on to other styles these days.

LemonPeonies · 20/10/2020 13:47

They used to fit fine until I put weight on with having a baby, now my fanny seems fatter. Im hoping they will fit when I've lost enough weight 😂. We all come in different shapes and sizes though so no idea why this isn't the case with knickers.

PenguinsOnParade · 20/10/2020 13:48

I find huge pants so uncomfortable and I have a rather sizeable arse. They never fit right, if I go up in sizes they slide down under my trousers, very rarely do they ever cover me properly at the back despite being huge, and if they do then there's always elastic or a seam or a label which rubs me instead.

Some of the comfiest undies I have are strings from Ann Summers (they were more from their "everyday" range than the "sexy" range.) They don't do the ones I have any more so I'm trying to make them last as I don't know if any of the current ones are as comfy as these. They are so ridiculously stretchy that I could probably catapult a small child up the street with one (not when I'm wearing it I should add!) Grin

tectonicplates · 20/10/2020 13:49

Totally agree about the double fabric bit being in the wrong place.

Are they designed by men? Clearly nobody here was on the design team.
