Circuit break in england?

Ilovegreentomatoes · 18/10/2020 18:41

Do you think boris will announce one by the end of the week? It would make sense to coincide with schools half term.
I think we need one, cases rising everywhere with the potential of higher death rates.
All these tier lockdowns are rubbish and confusing imo a 2 week circuit break is the best way forward to keep things under some control.

Of all the idiotic phrases Covid has engendered, 'circuit breaker' has to be one of the very worst.

Teateaandmoretea · 18/10/2020 19:50

They also have the financial implications of Long Covid they don’t understand enough to let this run through the whole population they just won’t allow it to happen. It’s not even an opinion it’s fact. They’ve left it so late their only option will be more restrictions over winter to get numbers lower.

I’m so sick of hearing about ‘long covid’. Post viral syndromes are nothing new.

Are you aware that the intentions re the vaccine are that those under 50 are unlikely to even have it? So we are all going to have covid long covid or not. ‘Lockdowns/ circuit breaks or whatever won’t change this.

Boris will announce one at 11pm on the Sunday before schools are due back in as is typical of all other education announcements.

Teateaandmoretea · 18/10/2020 19:51

I’m in the midlands and I haven’t been told this

It will be one school

If he tries then there will be riots

MarshaBradyo · 18/10/2020 19:55

@Ilovegreentomatoes

The purpose of the original lockdown was to stop the nhs getting overwhelmed so in that respect it worked. I will define out of control when r rate is above one which I believe it is everywhere.
It worked but how long did it take? Much longer than two weeks.

Are you willing to do the same time period or lockdown lift then stop again. Because many businesses will be gone.

WingingWonder · 18/10/2020 19:55

We are already on half term... they forgot our dates last time too with summer announcements 😞

Fortheroses · 18/10/2020 19:55

No.
Thought they might do it here in Scotland but we are back to school tomorrow :(

Tfoot75 · 18/10/2020 19:57

Surely an R of below 1 (ie cases decreasing) is entirely unrealistic given the season. I wish they'd drop this and admit its about controlling access to the NHS. It's so obvious the R is expected to be above 1 at this time of year, as it is for every respiratory virus.

QueenofLean · 18/10/2020 19:57

Yes... the announcement they made prior to schools going back... 2 weeks after ours had gone back.

Maryann1975 · 18/10/2020 19:58

I’m in an area with really low covid numbers. There is little sense in us all closing down for a fortnight to get covid under control. I get why areas with higher numbers would be closing for a short space of time, but surely, keep us open so we can continue to put money in to the economy. Then in 3 months (or whatever) when Our numbers go up, lock us down then and hopefully the north will have it a bit under control and they can repay the favour and pay for us to have a short lockdown.

To be honest, I’m so confused about ‘the rules’ in high and very high. I have no idea how those living there are following them to be honest!

Oaktree55 · 18/10/2020 20:02

@Teateaandmoretea yes I’m aware if the vaccine priority. They will use testing (rapid tests) to keep numbers down. They’re already starting to be used in Asia.

Mammaaof · 18/10/2020 20:03

Wales are announcing one tomorrow, hairdressers here have already been told via unions that they are to close after next Friday. We are waiting for Mark to announce tomorrow whether schools will have an additional week off. Rumours are primary will have 1 week and secondary will have 2.

starrynight19 · 18/10/2020 20:05

But surely if you have low cases now is the time to act before they spiral out of control like in the north ?
It’s rampant where I live , tier 3. Every school has cases most mulitple. We just about keeping them open. Local hospitals are feeling it.
We can go to work / school / college / uni / shops / supermarket / cafes / restaurants / the gym / garden centres / pubs that serve food until 10. Other than not meeting family in our houses which has been the case for weeks and weeks , I’m not sure tier 3 actually cuts it Sad

Teateaandmoretea · 18/10/2020 20:06

@Oaktree55 it isn’t just priority it is about relative risk. The risk of getting covid for healthy young people is less than the vaccine.

Oaktree55 · 18/10/2020 20:06

I really don’t understand those who can’t see what’s blatantly obvious. They will use whatever means they have to to get numbers down before rapid tests/vaccinations and whatever other tools science brings us pretty soon. Their thinking and a reasonable estimate is Q1 for game changing advances. I’m pretty sure Jeremy Farrar wasn’t making it up, he’s probably one of the most knowledgeable people who can speak openly.

Oaktree55 · 18/10/2020 20:08

@Teateaandmoretea you don’t know that. It’s a new virus they’re still discovering what it does to mildly affected.

Ilovegreentomatoes · 18/10/2020 20:08

Agree @starrynight19 all these tiers are a joke they don't mean anything.

CovidNightmare · 18/10/2020 20:08

No way will Boris announce a circuit breaker, he has already delegated locally decisions on restrictions. This is so central government can dodge any blame whether it be because numbers rise or local economies suffer, especially in Labour areas.

HateIsNotGood · 18/10/2020 20:10

Much as I respect Burnham and he has made some really good points that need serious consideration, my own view is accept Tier 3 now and now the possible/probable economic impacts on the Greater Manchester population are nationally known, thanks to Andy, Greater Manchester can hold the Govt to task on this.

Well done Andy B. My greatest concern is that he would be criticized and called a U-Turner if he agreed to Tier 3, which I think is counter-productive to getting CV19 rates down.

EscapedfromGN · 18/10/2020 20:12

*I’m in the midlands and I haven’t been told this

It will be one school.*

There is an East Midlands and a West Midlands. Leicestershire is on half term this week. Other areas may well be too. I don't think people come on here and lie about when their school holidays are.

There is no point locking down for two weeks.

CountreeGurl · 18/10/2020 20:14

I think the Government will do to bring infection rates down again before Christmas.
Lockdowns save lives and allow capacity for the NHS, I am all for it

RigaBalsam · 18/10/2020 20:16

SAGE say it will reset the numbers to early September which is much more manageable.
The professor on the channel 4 debate said when the NHS is filling up that will be a scary time too. Do we have to be really scared before we act? When its too late?

Another argument is that a shorter lockdown will be better for the economy limping along in tier 2 with no many people going out anyway but with no financial back up.

Sobeyondthehills · 18/10/2020 20:17

Its unlikely, I am in an area with low numbers, my half term technically starts on Friday, as its an insert day

Emmie12345 · 18/10/2020 20:17

No way , thank goodness
