Circuit break in england?

Ilovegreentomatoes · 18/10/2020 18:41

Do you think boris will announce one by the end of the week? It would make sense to coincide with schools half term.
I think we need one, cases rising everywhere with the potential of higher death rates.
All these tier lockdowns are rubbish and confusing imo a 2 week circuit break is the best way forward to keep things under some control.

I don't think they could do it now.
It's too late. Everyone has been waiting on tender hooks waiting and waiting wondering what to do.
We have cancelled half term plans in case, we don't know what to book, where to go for 6
days out and eg national trust places but can we do that?

It's an opportunity missed in my opinion. Cases are rapidly rising where I am I can only imagine we are heading to horrendous figures again, more so than march.

VikingVolva · 20/10/2020 07:13

Ds doesn't start half term until Friday, I hope Boris sees sense & starts 3 week circuit break on Friday

So 4 weeks out if school for all those whose half terms have already begun?

They really have left it too late. It should have overlapped the main weeks of the various half terms, and so should have started no later than yesterday.

If it's 3 weeks, none in half term, that means eating up the three extra weeks from delaying GCSE/A levels. What a fucking farce for this years y11 and 13

reallyneedmoresleep · 20/10/2020 07:32

I believe the virus has an incubation period of two weeks. My opinion is that we need to give everyone notice with time to stock up then go for a really strict two week lockdown- I’m sure the virus is still spreading because of a lack of compliance which is understandable given the constantly changing, unclear rules.

Ineke · 20/10/2020 08:31

Myrtles, yes it does sometime come down to health or wealth or socialising. I know what I would choose.

HelloMissus · 20/10/2020 08:40

I would t be surprised if some half arsed measures were announced.
Work from home if you can (millions can’t).
Don’t travel unless it’s ‘essential’ with no definition of essential.
Close bars and restaurants for a couple of weeks (but leave shops open).

@PineappleUpsideDownCake

I have plans in half term. After a difficult return to school Id really hope they get a half term.
We HAD plans in half term but DD is now self isolating as there's a case in her year. So we now have different plans. TBH I'd prefer lockdown as she's 6 and we can't go to the park and we don't have a garden, just a yard.
PineappleUpsideDownCake · 20/10/2020 08:46

Half our year group is self isolating over half term now too. Certainly each case has had a knock on effect on a lot of families. The classes were dropping like flies until they decided to close the school!

I think you're right that a lockdown would be easier than repeated cycles of self isolating when you cant even go our for walks.

myrtilles · 20/10/2020 09:08

@PineappleUpsideDownCake while schools are open the self isolating will keep happening anyway as cases were low when term restarted and year groups were already being sent home then. Obesity is a major risk factor in covid and I don’t think anyone without symptoms should be stopped from exercising away from others in a rural area. Eg if told to self isolate due to classmate having it or in 14 day quarantine after a holiday. It is appalling for people without symptoms to be locked indoors on a regular basis.

myrtilles · 20/10/2020 09:10

@ineke health and wealth are interrelated. Going on holiday isn’t socialising in many cases.

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 20/10/2020 09:11

I agree completely. Our area was low but now schools in our area are eother closing or sending year groups/classes home to self isolate.

One case can mean 30+ people who cant leave the house for 2 weeks.

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 20/10/2020 09:12

One of my kids has put on weight in lockdown (we initially shielded) and needs all the outdoor exercise we can get. Being stuck home for 2 weeks on repeat really won't help.

myrtilles · 20/10/2020 09:15

@PineappleUpsideDownCake. Further to my post above I just want to clarify that the law is currently that people cannot exercise if kids sent home from school. Obviously I would follow it if it happens to us. However I was wondering if it is unnecessarily harsh to stop people without symptoms from exercising away from others

myrtilles · 20/10/2020 09:16

@PineappleUpsideDownCake oops cross posted. I am so sorry for your dc being stuck at home repeatedly.

lljkk · 20/10/2020 09:21

If you look at maps of case counts, huge areas of Ireland, Wales & Scotland are still low case count areas. Is it best to wreck economy in low incidence areas unnecessarily? It will be interesting to see what happens.

zigaziga · 20/10/2020 10:43

Works for you, fab.

I love the replies that go on about other people being selfish (there would be no coronavirus if only people listened!!) but seamlessly move on to “half term starts for us at midday on Friday so it should start then” Grin

jillybeanclevertips · 20/10/2020 10:50

I'm tired of hearing the effect on economy, which I understnd is of paramount importance to a lot of folk, but the focus should be on stopping the spread of this virus, which is not going to go away for some time. Until we pull together as one untited county and support the efforts of our governement, regardless of your political affiliations. This new spike will be followed by others if we don't all stop acting like its not our problem- IT IS EVRYONES' PROBLEM. Lets accept that this G'M'T is doing the best that they can in an unprededented time. Wear the B. Masks, wash you hands and keep a social distance. Its not rocket science, just good common sense.

QueenofLean · 20/10/2020 10:59

Why do people keep saying it’s unprecedented? It’s not. We’ve had pandemics before, and will have them again.

buffyp · 20/10/2020 11:06

Well Jilly I am equally tired of only hearing about Covid deaths being one death too many as though it’s perfectly acceptable to die of anything else. Your right, we do need common sense which,IMO, means we have to consider the effects of lockdown on people’s health as much as the actual virus. Having a different opinion or outlook to you does NOT mean I have no common sense and I am sick and tired of being told that it does. If mask wearing is so bloody effective then why haven’t rates gone down with the introduction of them. We are ALL selfish to a certain degree, it’s human nature. At least I am honest enough to admit it and I’m damned well not apologising for having a different view.

chemlu · 20/10/2020 11:07

One of my children has a 2 week half term which has already started and my other 2 are on half term next week. Coronavirus is in my daughter's school for the second time! (Announced straight after she broke up for half term). Not in her year group thankfully. I live in the South East.

There is no mechanism by which pulling together and supporting the government can stop the spread of a virus. It won't respond to positive thinking or understanding. That's not how viruses work. It's particularly not how they work when they've been allowed to become endemic by a government who've handled the situation extremely badly.

The Economy affects everyone. People in low wage industries (hospitality, retail) and zero hours contracts are probably more affected by lockdowns than any one else. Actually the economy will be important to them because they will need to pay bills, pay the mortgage and feed their kids. (And you cant pay your bills or rent with common sense)

Unless you live completely self sufficiently, only eating food you grow/kill yourself, create your own power and have your own water supply and don’t use the NHS or any public services, then the economy should be of paramount importance to everyone.

Also home school your kids..?

QueenofLean · 20/10/2020 11:46

Yes, and that.

IcedPurple · 20/10/2020 12:25

Can't believe there are people out there who still think 'the economy' only concerns stockbrokers and commodity traders.

It affects every single one of us. Including smug MNers who've loved the chance to bake organic banana bread and do Zoom pilates classes during lockdown.
