To think DM is an insufferable snob?

Recent visit to DM and she comment on DCs off white vest UNDER sleepsuit.

Apparently people will think we are ‘poor, rough and like those pp (pupil premium or something) kids at school’. It’s not just her apparently she’s heard it many times from others too.

I’m raging, do people actually judge children based on their parents not separating whites when washing. Is that even a thing? I’ve never ever thought of it EVER.

It's amazing what people apparently judge others on.

There was a thread on here years ago in which a post mentioned how her mother claimed 'you could tell a lot from the state of the skirting boards in someone's house'.

Clearly, I'm a fairly dusty sort of person.

burglarbettybaby · 16/10/2020 14:38

Why would she even comment on it Hmm but I do use colour catchers and keep all pure whites separate (to save money more than anything - so stuff looks newer for longer not to please anyone else)

sapnupuas · 16/10/2020 14:38

My mum said the teachers will think my son is "council estate" if I write his name in his labels instead of getting sew-in ones...

Omg she’d have a hernia if she saw the ones in my living room right now 😂

Why would you not separate your whites? Why buy clothes just to ruin them? X

LST · 16/10/2020 14:41

I do normally separate whites, but sometimes white vests and pants get thrown in with the rest and they will still be worn in their off white state. Life is too short to care about that!

I mean.. you can though 😂

WWYD2020 · 16/10/2020 14:43

Good lord! I don’t think I’ve ever looked at someone’s skirtings let alone based and opinions on them.

They are not ruined if they’re no longer crisp white. It’s still a piece of clothing that functions and looks decent.

My mother was from a very poor family and keeping up standards was important to her. It's never worried me. I think it's easier to get what you want from officialdom if you seem to be well educated and comfortably-off. It's a lot easier to be relaxed about how you appear to others when you've never been on the wrong side of people's perceptions.

The separating whites is a thing.(to some people. Why ruin something if you don't need to)

The rest is nonsense.

MereDintofPandiculation · 16/10/2020 14:45

... the point of that was to say that I'm a lot less concerned about appearances than my mother, but it's because of our different upbringings, and I would never condemn her as an "insufferable snob".

AuntieMarys · 16/10/2020 14:46

My mother thought baked beans were common. I never had them till I went to university

WWYD2020 · 16/10/2020 14:46

How does not separating whites = poor though?! Am I missing something.

OP posts:
WWYD2020 · 16/10/2020 14:48

@AuntieMarys that one made me laugh! Did you enjoy?

OP posts:
unmarkedbythat · 16/10/2020 14:48

I separate whites and a snob at my work who heard me talking about laundry to a friend (I know, I am such an exciting and glamourous person) sneered at me because colours running and ruining whites only happens if the clothes are cheap and nasty and the machine is cheap and rubbish. Snobs will always find something to be superior about, leave them to it, the weirdos.

SeasonallySnowyPeasant · 16/10/2020 14:48

Each to their own but there's no denying that white whites look nicer and better cared-for than greying whites.

Just guessing, but not being able to afford the powder for two separate washes. Having an inferior machine or having to wash by hand so things don’t get as sparkly? Not being able to afford to replace things when they start to look worn?

All utter crap, but could be a form of logic. In my experience it’s people brought up with very little who look for these signs of poverty in others, and vow never to ‘look poor’ again, so it could be coming from some deep seated emotional stuff.

WWYD2020 · 16/10/2020 14:50

That proves it’s nonsense though @MereDintofPandiculation surely? Your mum was financially ‘poor’ and had super white whites. So her saying off white makes me/DC look ‘poor’ to be the opposite of what poor families would do.

TeaAndStrumpets · 16/10/2020 14:51

I spend hours scrubbing my front step....one has one's standards, doncha know! Also, the rest of my community would have me tarred and feathered if they knew I didn't boil wash everything on Mondays Grin

OP does your mother do historical reenactment by any chance?

Totally off topic, but I really miss Victoria Wood. This sort of thing was meat and drink to her.

CatsAndEyeliner · 16/10/2020 14:51

It is a bit unnecessary ruined though - just for the sake of taking one extra minute to separate your laundry or chucking a colour catcher in.

Although it still functions I wouldn’t say it looks as decent anymore.

AbbieFB · 16/10/2020 14:52

I thought everyone separated whites!

No thoughts about those that don’t though.

TeaAndStrumpets · 16/10/2020 14:54

AuntyMarys surely more vulgar than common, given the results!

WWYD2020 · 16/10/2020 14:54

I don’t really have many white items, one t shirt.

DC vests are werewhite

OP posts:
woodhill · 16/10/2020 14:56

I separate whites but would never comment on my dgds clothing as my dd would get annoyed

Nanny0gg · 16/10/2020 14:57

I think the thought is that off-white, grey-white looks grubby.
Therefore neglected.
