I’m fascinated by them, how do you eat them, what do they taste of and what’s the difference between a saveloy and a chippy sausage?

The texture is a bit more solid like a hotdog. The taste is different but difficult to explain. If you ever ate pologny sausage it's a bit like that but warm.

The80sweregreat · 11/10/2020 20:45

Awful and I do eat meat.
Avoid them and just have the chips!

Hoppinggreen · 11/10/2020 20:46

They are a bit of a dirty vice for me to be honest and I rarely eat any kind of sausage
They are quite a paste like texture with a hint of spice - I really love the snap of the skin as you bite into them. I try not to think about what’s in them . Haven’t had one for ages as I can only get them from the deli counter at Sainsbos which has been closed due to Covid

passthemustard · 11/10/2020 20:46

Umm it tastes a bit like a frankfurter I suppose. I would just eat them with chips. (Not that I do) used to like them as a child. They taste quite artificial I suppose. A chippy sausage is just a normal sausage fried isnt it?

Igotthemheavyboobs · 11/10/2020 20:46

Microvaved grimness

HarryDaylight · 11/10/2020 20:48

Why would you ask when it's so easy to sample one?

Busybusybust · 11/10/2020 20:48

Buy one and taste it! Personally, I don’t like them, but, come on, you’ll never know until you taste one.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 11/10/2020 20:50

They are at their very best as a Saveloy Dip. Well dipped, with mustard, pease pudding and stuffing.

CathyorClaire · 11/10/2020 20:50

Just buy one and find out Confused

longwayoff · 11/10/2020 20:51

Much greasier than a normal sausage, odd texture and flavour. Actively unpleasant imo.

KarlKennedysDurianFruit · 11/10/2020 20:51

All kinds of wrong, but I definitely liked them when I was younger now I think about the eyelids and toenails they are definitely made from. PP was accurate in that is a slightly denser, pasty textured, thick skinned frankfurter with spices. Should definitely be eaten with boiled potatoes and pease pudding not chips though

KarlKennedysDurianFruit · 11/10/2020 20:53

They shouldn't be greasy? They're microwaved boiled/steamed

Kinkybutkind · 11/10/2020 20:53

Kind of like a denser, smokey hotdog with a more firm skin. I always feel like the should really be peeled !

olderthanyouthink · 11/10/2020 20:56

Kinda spiced and I love the snappy skin. You eat one with chips far to quickly (so in reality you need 2) and without thinking about its contents.

Iheardarumour · 11/10/2020 21:01

Put it this way, saveloys are not a thing where I come from but my in-laws only buy one from the chippy for the dog. I see them stewing in hot water for hours in chippy warmers and feel 🤢.

MakeAWhish · 11/10/2020 21:02

Bad life choices.

DarceyDashwood · 11/10/2020 21:05

This is a great thread 😂 proper cheered me up for some weird reason. People discussing saveloys on the internet

paintmywholehousepink · 11/10/2020 21:05

Like hot dogs.

amusedtodeath1 · 11/10/2020 21:08

Where would you buy a saveloy in the North though, I've never seen any?

workshyfop · 11/10/2020 21:11

Mmm a saveloy dip 😋

QuestionableMouse · 11/10/2020 21:12

Most small butchers sell them.

Eat them cold, in a stottie, with plenty of butter. I also always peel them. (Not that I eat them much now)

graceeellixo · 11/10/2020 21:12

Sorry I should have added didnt know people would find fault in a thread about a sausage

I live in the north west and can’t find one in my chippies. (Believe me I have tried)

Pinkfluffyunicornsdancing · 11/10/2020 21:12

@amusedtodeath1 South Shields. Dickson's butchers.

AlwaysLatte · 11/10/2020 21:15

Like plastic! But just buy one and try it as taste varies person to person.

Drogonssmile · 11/10/2020 21:19

I live in the north west and I have never in my life seen a saveloy. My DH lived in London for ten years and curses the north's lack of saveloys.
