To be tempted by this house

But not pursue it as it’s almost certainly very very haunted. It’s beautiful, I love it, but I just cannot cope with the number of ghosts that it looks as though it contains. AIBU?

Absolutely riddled with ghosts. I counted at least 6

HibiscusNell · 10/10/2020 22:20

Sorry if someone else has posted this but HERE are some better photos of the house from an older sales listing. It looks a lot better in these photos and there are no excess chairs.

Wellsbells · 10/10/2020 22:22

Oh good find @HibiscusNell!

Could be at auction as the owners are heading to bankruptcy and need a quick sale or just desperate to get rid.

Unsure33 · 10/10/2020 22:26

It’s lovely . Bet it goes for more than 450.

Must be of historical importance.

Felifox · 10/10/2020 22:31

It's a beautiful house but as others say it's on a busy road with a small garden and could be very costly to keep in good repair. But someone will love it.

My house is 1726 so I don't worry about ghosts

pilort · 10/10/2020 22:31

Did it sell recently & once for less than was paid for it?

ToastyCrumpet · 10/10/2020 22:33

I’d be worried about it being haunted by death watch beetle, woodworm and damp, tbh. Must be a total money pit.

bananaskinsnomnom · 10/10/2020 22:34

Portraits like that scare me. As do china dolls - not that I saw any of those.

Otherwise a beautiful house!

Witchend · 10/10/2020 22:36

If anyone wants to buy it for me I'll cope with the ghosts. It looks like it was once a pub/B&B type place.
It's beautiful

52andblue · 10/10/2020 22:42

It's beautiful!!!
And cheap!!!

But I bought a house that was beautiful (not that beautiful)
and cheap (MUCH cheaper)
then to discover it had previously been advertised for sale as haunted, in some international 'haunted' magazine, and been mentioned in US literature (weirdly). Plus, when I moved in, locals at the Mums and toddlers group said: 'oh, you bought THAT house'. Oof.

Coffeeandbeans · 10/10/2020 22:49

Gorgeous house.

PickAChew · 10/10/2020 22:49

I'm pretty sure someone has died in my house and it celebrates its 86th birthday, next week. Stayed in the same family for 70 years, though, transferring between different members through wills, private sales and wotnot.

It is quite charming but must have something very expensive wrong with it. I noticed the ceiling in one of the rooms had fallen rather badly. I bet it has bog all foundations shakes like giant maracas every time a lorry passes. My parents' house does and it's only Victorian.

popsydoodle4444 · 10/10/2020 22:49

Was it a swingers club?;it's the only explanation for so many chairs facing beds/baths

PickAChew · 10/10/2020 22:51

That house also wouldn't go for less than a million where I live, and I'm in the northeast!

VeggieSausageRoll · 10/10/2020 22:57

No excess chairs?! There's loads!
MoonJelly · 10/10/2020 22:58

@Wibblypiggly

Cannot get over how cheap that is. It must be structurally fucked. Round where I live that will get you a small terrace house with character or a nasty 30s semi.
That's the suggested auction price, it's likely to go for more than that. The price will be low due to the Grade 1 listing rather than any structural issues.

The possibility of ghosts wouldn't put me off, due to the fact that ghosts don't exist.

mrsbyers · 10/10/2020 22:58

What’s going on with all the chairs dotted around ? Unless they perform live sex shows I fail to see why they’d need a tow of chairs in a bedroom... random rocking chair ... random (uncomfortable) chair by the fire .... chair against a wall with no desk or table by it

MirandaGoshawk · 10/10/2020 22:58

YANBU - it's gorgeous, no doubt about that, but I too get a haunted vibe from it. I've lived in a 16th century pub - sometimes I was too scared to go up to bed alone. I felt things but always kept my eyes screwed shut. DD was convinced too. Now I live in a modern house and feel so much calmer - there's no haunted feel here, which is great.

SirVixofVixHall · 10/10/2020 22:58

Two chairs by the bath ??? Have they been renting out rooms via airbnb or something and think people need extra chairs ?

percheron67 · 10/10/2020 22:59

I think it is gorgeous and don't get any scary vibes from it. The bathroom would take some living with, though.

Ellmau · 10/10/2020 23:00

Ooh, it was a chapel for several hundred years, I wonder if there are any graves in the garden (to provide the ghosts, obv): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Old_Manor,_Croscombe

mathanxiety · 10/10/2020 23:03

YABU about the ghosts.

You can't have the house because I want it.

Fifthtimelucky · 10/10/2020 23:03

Beautiful house. I'd buy it. Though I bet it goes for a lot more than the suggested price.

Yes, it's right on the road but it's not as busy a road as it used to be.

lurklemurkle · 10/10/2020 23:04

I'm guessing it needs something similar to this doing to it: www.landmarktrust.org.uk/search-and-book/properties/old-hall-9872/#Restoration
