to think you only buy a LV handbag to show off how wealthy you are?

I'm not disputing their quality, as having watched a lot of construction videos they do seem reasonably well-made, but the monogrammed "leather" is just so ugly.

A bog-standard tote will set you back £1200 - handmade bags made by lesser known brands/designers in full-grain, veg tan leather would cost less and be far more attractive. (And higher quality too)

Seeing as we wear things to make a statement about ourselves (for the most part) and considering the bags aren't aesthetically pleasing, the statement, in this case, must be "look how much money I have"?

@Manteo I think that's more to do with age group to be honest. The older you get the less likely you are to post pictures of new purchases as you really tend to be less bothered. At the same time pandora is marketed at this younger market etc

queenofarles · 19/10/2020 12:37

I agree it’s more targeted towards young buyers who want to own something branded.

Just like those awful tees and sweatshirt with Gucci or Balenciaga logo all over , they are specifically priced to be the most accessible.
Doubt it people would still buy that shirt if it didn’t have a Gucci logo.

I don’t see many LV non branded bags around, they used to make a lovely non monogrammed one designed by Sofia Coppola perhaps it’s discontinued now. It was a stunning Bag, google it.
I guess people mostly prefer buying the monogrammed version instead of the the non monogrammed one because it looks more recognizable

BlueThistles · 19/10/2020 12:41

I draw the line at Gucci 🤣

Scrumbleton · 19/10/2020 13:06

Not my bag!! I have a number of pricey bags but nothing with symbols or that is popular with the fakers. I do have a Range Rover which some consider tacky but I actually need it. For off road driving

That is a nice bag - no surprise from Sofia Coppola. My problem is that I fling my bag on the floor of a pub, restaurant etc - I wouldn't like to have to make a fuss about where my bag sat and if I paid £2k how could I not!😂 Although when we ate at Pollen Street Social they made a big fuss about putting our bags on special bag stands, it felt like complete overkill, I hate fuss.
lovepickledlimes · 19/10/2020 13:37

@ToryAldi I don't think I ever flung my bag to the ground lol even as a child 😂🤣😂 probably one of the many reasons why my ballet bag I used when I was 6 is still in such a good shape lol. Always been fussy with my items and babying them

happilybemused · 19/10/2020 17:19

Reading between the lines there are perhaps age differences/ location differences between posters.

I've never seen anyone on my social media post a photo of their new car, let alone showing off their Pandora bracelet. I can, however understand someone in their 20's doing so.

There are cars I would describe as tacky and flashy but a Range Rover would not be one. I have one because we need to go off road living where we do.

I can honestly say I wouldn't ever assume anyone had a 'fake bag' Again, I'm perhaps at an age or in a location where it wouldn't happen.

More snobbery here over if you have to put your horse into stables rather than have your own. Ditto only having a swimming pool and no tennis courts.

Definitely an eye opening thread.

ivfbabymomma1 · 19/10/2020 18:29

I don't think so! I bought a Gucci bag for myself as a treat after working hard and getting a bonus and the Gucci logo is tiny! You would not notice it was Gucci without close inspection! I'm certainly not rich! My mum has a Gucci bag that she's had for 30 years and it still looks great!

ToryAldi · 19/10/2020 18:31

This is funny - people around here always suggest the same thing - but on the narrow country roads people driving their Range Rovers are always the last ones to pull into the ditch to let someone past, god forbid it gets a wee bit muddy.😂

Ireolu · 19/10/2020 18:49

I wear a high end cross body bag to the park with my DD. I really don't care what other people think but from reading this thread I am now confident people think it's fake. It isn't but I honestly struggle to care still. For me bags are for wearing and cost per wear means I am getting my money's worth out of it. Pre house buying and having my daughter I was more spendy. Now I have other responsibilities I don't buy them anymore. Some people just like expensive handbags. Most people don't and that's fine. Each to their own.

not on mines... we can't avoid mud sand farmlands etc ... clean isn't an option lol 😂

When I lived rurally there were loads of range rovers and people bought them, used them for a long time and most had the signs of a vehicle that's used in the countryside.

Now I don't but theres an area near me where every other car is a 4x4, all the crossover types, all immaculate and a good number of them can be found outside the local school gates 45 minutes before pick up time when the catchment is only a 10 minute walk in any direction.

The social media showing off thing is probably age thing in places, but probably more a social group trend. Some of my younger colleagues have talked at length about their new car and put loads of photos on social media, but it's on a PCP and they're paying a fortune just to say they've got an Audi/BMW in their early 20s. They also talk about how they'll 'never be able to afford a house' in the same conversation about ordering expensive clothes online because they are going out for a weekend in a city drinking. One of them did a 'new nails' photo for their Instagram but her new nails were strategically placed next to the branding on her steering wheel. Some people are quite image conscious.

happilybemused · 20/10/2020 02:52

No need to purchase spray on mud here for sure 😂

Manteo · 21/10/2020 10:04

I'm in my late 30s and occasionally see people posting photos of theirs luxury brand car or new build detached house. In more than one occasion these have been the same people who post pictures of their new hand bag flowers from 'the hubs', pandora bags, kids wearing clothes with v obvious Joules labels etc. Some people place a lot of value on popular or expensive labels.

Initially I read that to mean you were driving over disused coal mines.

lovepickledlimes · 21/10/2020 12:46

@Manteo just had a look at Joules and it seems their clothes for kids are very nice. If I chose to dress my children like that and posted any picture would that be seen as tacky or showing off?

It really wouldn’t be either. Seems you can’t like or buy anything nice or from somewhere that isn’t Primark without being accused of being tacky or showing off.

Neither.
Most people wouldn't care where your DC clothes are from, and probably couldn't tell.

If you wanted to join the nauseating 'look at me' crew then you'd need to have a suitably staged photo with the packaging/labels on show. You'd get bonus points if you did that with a humble brag caption or fake modesty caption.

happilybemused · 21/10/2020 19:12

At the point lovely people are getting wary of posting their children wearing Joules. (Also agree a lovely child brand.)

I would like to stage an intervention.

Clearly we all have brands we like or feel are tacky.

Clearly it differentiates between location and/ or age.

What use is shaming someone either way ?

BlueThistles · 21/10/2020 21:14

I'm in that 'Old' bracket I'm afraid lol Grin

happilybemused · 21/10/2020 23:45

@LolaSmiles are you an 'influencer' with an ongoing deal with TK Max or Amazon shopping?

I really can't understand your constant sniping or put downs otherwise.

Really weird comment - is it meant to be a not so subtle put down? I went through lolasmile’s posts out of interest and there were completely normal - so you don’t agree with her - this is AIBU - agreeing is not what this forum is for.

Handbags come in for an unfair pasting imo. I bought a loewe for my 50th. I love it. It's beautiful. Some of the posters slagging off handbag afficionados probably have rings that cost more. Or drive a car that is more 3xpensive than what they need to get from A to B
