to think you only buy a LV handbag to show off how wealthy you are?

I'm not disputing their quality, as having watched a lot of construction videos they do seem reasonably well-made, but the monogrammed "leather" is just so ugly.

A bog-standard tote will set you back £1200 - handmade bags made by lesser known brands/designers in full-grain, veg tan leather would cost less and be far more attractive. (And higher quality too)

Seeing as we wear things to make a statement about ourselves (for the most part) and considering the bags aren't aesthetically pleasing, the statement, in this case, must be "look how much money I have"?

I just presume anyone who has one is a counterfeit. They look the same of the fakes you can pick up in a Spanish market for €20.

I have a designer clutch but I bought it in NYC century 21 as it was $40.

Each to their own. I would judge someone harshly though. It's their cash to waste. If I see someone driving a 4x4 Porsche I just presume they must be quite clever and hard working. I dont think less because it's a womans bag, but you cant counterfeit a car. Bags you can so to me, I dont look twice I just presume it's a fake. If it's not, good for you on earning it

Legoandloldolls · 12/10/2020 09:29

Gah wouldn't judge harshly

BlueThistles · 12/10/2020 09:46

Who has the right to judge what anyone spends their money on. OP's bitterness runs so deep she cannot even see it, whilst expressing she does not care, yet with every response sounds more bitter Confused

There are those who have .. and those who have not ..?got things of a certain brand. Who sits and watches who is using what ? it's very weird. So if OP's life revolves around YouTube then so be it. Personally Im taking my dog to the beach, that's my happy place, and no Im not taking a designer bag but I am wearing my Hunter wellies, are those perhaps on OP's assassination list too 😏

unmarkedbythat · 12/10/2020 10:10

Everyone judges, although not everyone admits it. Who cares? I expect to be judged. It's human. As long as you're not trying to act on your judgements and prevent me doing as I please (within reason), how does your judging me impact me at all? Why do people get so bothered about others viewing their choices negatively? If spending a lot of money on an item makes you happy, have at it, but taking offence if others think your item isn't worth the cost or have a negative judgement about you doing it is pointless. I'm sure people with designer bags wouldn't be enthused about the things I do like, I do not give a toss what they think of my preferences and don't for a moment expect them to give what I think of theirs any weight at all.

fluffums · 12/10/2020 10:13

ugly!

you have this the wrong way round... I don't buy anything to show it's worth .. I buy it as I like it and want to use it. Read the thread, the negative connotations come from those posters who believe people are displaying wealth ... 🌺

Vieve1325 · 12/10/2020 10:20

I think the one in your OP is a belly button - everyone seems to have one. Most of the people I know who have them aren’t wealthy in the slightest. And the wealthy folk I know are more likely to be stuffing their belongings in the pockets of a wax jacket rather than carry a handbag.

Janegrey333 · 12/10/2020 10:41

Displaying wealth is only done by those who are merely pretending. They rarely get it right.

You are not doing this right. It’s all a bit “try hard” and consequently unconvincing.

Personally I think this is quite outdated. Lots of people who have millions enjoy spending & showing its off.

I live in rural Scotland.. in the Highlands... you'll struggle to find anyone NOT wearing them here.. 🤣 especially today ... its pouring ☔️ so NO ... not trying too hard 😂

This is not the case anymore it is evident rich MC/UC like to show off too splash out on expensive holidays private education yachts even private planes.
A garage of fancy cars.
This includes world royals.
You get my drift it is not exclusive to try hards.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 12/10/2020 11:06

Not fond of logos at all, and I resent the principle of paying large sums of money simply for someone's product branding which I then get the privilege of advertising for them. Bollocks to that.

Those brown initialled handbags are ugly, IMO. I'm after a cape, and had tracked down a lovely one from Holland Cooper which I thought was perfect - until I saw the picture of the back. There's a small belted section suspended within two buttons which has a huge metal logo slap in the middle of it. At that price I don't want the problem of having to remove it and leaving damage behind. Put me right off.

All my own personal preference and taste, which isn't an affront to those who do like these items. I don't. It would be a boring old world if we all liked the same.

BlueThistles · 12/10/2020 11:08

WoobyWoo · 12/10/2020 11:09

I’ve got one of the Gucci bags with the GG buckle (is it the Marmont?) which has gone down a similar road to the LV print, everyone and his dog had one on Instagram a couple of years ago. But I bought it because I really liked it at the time and still really like it and will continue to use it.

I wouldn’t ever spend money on a pair of shoes because I wreck them and it’s not practical for me but I’ve got a few nice handbags, not high, high end but Chloe, Coach, Mulberry, that type of thing. I’m not pretending to be richer than I am, I just enjoy a lovely handbag and buy the nicest I can afford. And wear them with my New Look shoes! Grin

I don't think so.
I don't have one myself my Dsis has a few the quality is obvious to me.
The clasps and feet the way it sits. She buys the different LV pattern to the standard (means nothing to me
She always dresses really smart for work and is well groomed.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 12/10/2020 11:50

I don’t think they’re necessarily a sign of wealth. I’ve heard of people on very ordinary or low incomes even getting into debt to buy one, because they’re obsessed with designer items. Presumably the sort of people the ‘must have’ term was coined for.

WoobyWoo · 12/10/2020 11:57

It’s all part of the fun though isn’t it, being young and nice looking and earning decent money to —waste— spend on what you like. Sadly I’m hitting the age now where I’ll probably start paying extra into my pension for fun instead or spending on something highly sensible like botox.

Itsmybirthday19 · 12/10/2020 12:09

Let people enjoy things.

damnthatanxiety · 12/10/2020 12:38

Apparently on MN, low end designer like Mulberry is covetable but high end like Chanel, Bottega, Loewe are 'try hard'. Hilarious.
