to think you only buy a LV handbag to show off how wealthy you are?

I'm not disputing their quality, as having watched a lot of construction videos they do seem reasonably well-made, but the monogrammed "leather" is just so ugly.

A bog-standard tote will set you back £1200 - handmade bags made by lesser known brands/designers in full-grain, veg tan leather would cost less and be far more attractive. (And higher quality too)

Seeing as we wear things to make a statement about ourselves (for the most part) and considering the bags aren't aesthetically pleasing, the statement, in this case, must be "look how much money I have"?

That’s a cringeworthy thing to say. Showy, as in talking about money and expensive usually ugly bags, is not classy.

this Thread is cringy .... 🌺

@pilort

Why are people getting so antsy, of course there is an element of truth to the OP. Buying a certain brand is about making a statement, I don't love Chanel bags because they are the best bags ever designed but because they are Chanel.
The leather is amazing though. I totally lust after a 255.
pilort · 10/10/2020 12:37

@tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz I mean some people are sneery but I do think some people are genuinely baffled by it & have no interest. I have a friend who is incredibly wealthy who would never spend money on bags because she just doesn't get it.

My Chanel purchases these days are very much restricted to wallets on a chain & fashion jewellery as the bag prices are now generally out of my reach!

AstiniMartini · 10/10/2020 12:37

I have a LV bag that i bought at an auction house (deceased estate). It is genuine and we paid £100 for it. They retail over £1 k and I get pleasure out of getting a bargain!

Hardly ever use it though!

pilort · 10/10/2020 12:38

@VinylDetective it is!

formerbabe · 10/10/2020 12:38

@BlueThistles

How absurd. If I wanted to advertise our wealth, LV wouldn't be the bag I would choose to do it. YABU.

so true... my LV's are probably my cheapest bags 🌺

Oh God, same. In fact, I'm so wealthy, I buy lv bags to use as bin liners...
AstiniMartini · 10/10/2020 12:38

I get super excited over Le Creuset though.

TurquoiseDress · 10/10/2020 12:43

I like the style of the bag in the first photo, I'd love it in brown or tan colour

It's just the logo all over it I don't like!

To be honest, depending on where in London I am, when I see those types of over the top logo handbags, I tend to assume they are fakes & don't pay them much thought or attention

yes me too... Oh and bags for life.. I just chuck my soap powder and eggs into mines... its so fun 🤣

KarmaStar · 10/10/2020 13:18

If I could afford one, will Google what lv is soon,I wouldn't buy one as made from a dead animal,so,however attractive the wearer may think they look, they are still walking around with a poor dead animal hanging from their shoulder.

unmarkedbythat · 10/10/2020 16:06

If I had loads of money I'm sure I'd make extravagant purchases. Not these bags because they just aren't my thing. I think that's what baffles me most- they're ugly. If I had thousands to drop on luxuries I'd want them to look nice!

Itsmybirthday19 · 10/10/2020 16:49

I have a Neverfull. It is probably my most useful bag - I use it as a work bag - chuck my laptop and all manner of assorted crap in it, it holds loads. It also looks fab after three years of abuse, so I'm very happy with it.

But then I have about 40 designer handbags, so I am clearly just a show off 😄

Itsmybirthday19 · 10/10/2020 16:53

@CarolineBingley true actually. The Chanel I bought the other day was just a touch more expensive than the LV. No logo though, should have got the classic flap instead of the 2.55 😉

Itsmybirthday19 · 10/10/2020 16:56

Aw, it's been ages since we had a bag thread. I feel all nostalgic.

SpnBaby1967 · 10/10/2020 17:04

I dont like LV, but I think because there are just so many fakes of that print (and the white version with the rainbow coloured lettering) around.

But, I always wanted a Radley handbag and purchased my first new one about a year ago now and my second recently. I use them as bags though, and will buy more!

I grew up in poverty, I spent most of my married life and early mum years on the bread line. I worked bloody hard (as did DH) to get us out of it, damn right I'm going to buy whatever I want no matter what other people might think of it.

Pugdogmom · 10/10/2020 17:42

Not a fan of LV bags myself, but I do have some designer bags. Good quality and I love them. Couldn't really care less what people think. Buy what you want.

hexmeginny · 10/10/2020 17:46

Well no of course not.
Any idiot who spends this kind of money on a bag really is pathetic.

Why am I a pathetic idiot?

A bag worth €1500 is a little less than 0.03% of my net worth. It’s all relative and has nothing to do with my intelligence or my worth as a human.

Ninkanink · 10/10/2020 18:00

I’m anything but a pathetic idiot, actually.

I believe in spending my money on things that make me happy. A beautiful bag makes me happy.

Anyone who makes idiotic pronouncements like that in all likelihood has some utterly pathetic motivation for doing so.

Bagelsandbrie · 10/10/2020 18:04

I think this to be honest. I can’t stand obvious labels on anything. It just screams common to me but then I Blush at myself saying that!

Many years ago when I used to work as a Clinique consultant everyone used to have designer bags. It was a symbol of how successful you were as a consultant. Everyone used to save up their commission and spend it on a bag - seeing as we all had to wear uniform it was the only personal thing that was visible. Everyone used to go for LV bags and Chanel stud earrings as they were the most obviously designer things people could wear.

chocolate that is indeed a beauty. Also, ace username Grin

I love it. I think lv bags are gorgeous. Can't believe some people think they're ugly. I think they look really classic and improve any outfit.
RUOKHon · 10/10/2020 18:47

I bought an LV tote from Depop for an absolute steal. I couldn’t believe how cheap it was. I would never pay full price for a designer bag. It seems mad to me that anyone does.
