to think you only buy a LV handbag to show off how wealthy you are?

I'm not disputing their quality, as having watched a lot of construction videos they do seem reasonably well-made, but the monogrammed "leather" is just so ugly.

A bog-standard tote will set you back £1200 - handmade bags made by lesser known brands/designers in full-grain, veg tan leather would cost less and be far more attractive. (And higher quality too)

Seeing as we wear things to make a statement about ourselves (for the most part) and considering the bags aren't aesthetically pleasing, the statement, in this case, must be "look how much money I have"?

Lol

tigger001 · 10/10/2020 09:33

Surely you could turn this to anything though, to spend money over and above necessity would be an extravagance or showy. Some people just like luxury in whatever form that comes in, to some it's a house, a car and to others it's a handbag or a watch.

I just think people have different taste, if people have worked hard, why not spend it on something they love.

Emeraldshamrock · 10/10/2020 09:47

Once working class were able to wear LV sometimes at huge costs to their family it became tacky.
If it is any consolation they don't make WC mothers happy Instagram is a curse
Like everything once those WC put their mittens on it the MC recoil in horror imagine they were mistaken for a WC person. Shock
It is a superiority and snobbery.

@Time2change2

Absolute pretentious crap along with most other designer goods. To be honest it hugely affects my opinion of friends or strangers when I see them with a bag or very high end designer item.
I think that says a lot more about you than the friends or strangers who spend their own money and make their own choices on what they buy
TeachesOfPeaches · 10/10/2020 10:02

Louis Vuitton apparently used to send Snooki (reality tv star) Gucci bags to make Gucci look cheap and tacky

Macncheeseballs · 10/10/2020 10:06

Haha, it's all tacky nonsense

unmarkedbythat · 10/10/2020 10:11

I don't think I'd recognise one of these items anyway. But I agree, you buy them to flaunt. You might pretend otherwise but the point of these things is obvious.

pilort · 10/10/2020 10:16

Well I do have a penchant for Chanel so subconsciously I must like it because it has some level of exclusivity as I don't want the Primark version. However with the advent of cheap credit I don't think it's a reflection of how wealthy you are.

pilort · 10/10/2020 10:21

I will say my mum has a black epi LV & it's indestructible. I also have a gucci tote that has survived very well so do think the quality is good.

ZaraW · 10/10/2020 10:30

I love a well made handbag but no longer buy designer. My last handbag was from a small artisan family business based in Tuscany. It's handmade, beautiful quality and no logos. It also supports a small business and is a lot cheaper than LV.

topcat2014 · 10/10/2020 10:41

Fool and their money are easily parted. Gives people happiness I suppose

LeanishMachine · 10/10/2020 10:45

I understand a very good quality designer handbag. You do need to pay a lot more for really good quality IME and a quality product is a joy to use. I don't understand the LV brown lettered ones and I don't understand paying ££££ for a bag if have you buy cheap shoes or go without elsewhere to pay for it. I certainly wouldn't borrow to do it.

BlueThistles · 10/10/2020 10:47

I have two LV's... gifts from my DH.. travel bag and overnight bag.. I quite sure nobody cares when I use them except me 🌺

CarolineBingley · 10/10/2020 10:59

How absurdGrin. If I wanted to advertise our wealth, LV wouldn't be the bag I would choose to do itGrin. YABU.

Guitarstrings · 10/10/2020 11:17

I’ve got one, and it’s absolutely nothing to do with me saying “oh look at the bag I have, Ive made it”. What complete and utter rubbish.

I like them so I saved up to buy one.

It doesn’t matter if you don’t like it, what matters is the person who has it likes it.

You sound very judgmental

so true... my LV's are probably my cheapest bags 🌺

That’s a cringeworthy thing to say. Showy, as in talking about money and expensive usually ugly bags, is not classy.

On that basis I am assuming you use a Tesco 15p bag for life to carry your possessions around, why pay more? It does the job and can be replaced for free should it ever break?

Claricestarling1 · 10/10/2020 11:59

Wish I had half the confidence of the OP to decide that I was the final word in style and class and then bestow my opinion on the masses! 🤣 don’t like it? Don’t buy it, simple! You don’t need to do the whole faux concern about “I don’t understand” or “I just find it absurd”..just let people be!! No one owes you an explanation for their purchases! Anyway I have four LVs and love them all..don’t be too concerned for me though 🤣🤣

pilort · 10/10/2020 12:14

Why are people getting so antsy, of course there is an element of truth to the OP. Buying a certain brand is about making a statement, I don't love Chanel bags because they are the best bags ever designed but because they are Chanel.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 10/10/2020 12:23

pil I think what gets people's back up on threads like this (those who buy/enjoy a pricey bag), and I include myself in this, is more the sneery attitude of other posters, as if not buying designer makes you a better person. That attitude, for me, is what makes someone a dick, not what they wear or buy.

Btw, I'm very jealous you have a Chanel Smile

As an aside, I've a friend who over say, 10 years, has probably spent twice on high street bags which inevitability end up in landfill, than I have on the 4 or 5 more expensive/designer ones I have purchased over the same period of time. She laughs when I put them away in their dust bags after I switch them over (says I'm precious about them) but I know that by taking good care of them - and I take care of all my clothing as I want it to last and look good for as long as possible - I'll get years out of them.

19lottie82, what strange logic?!
