To not understand the Hinch/grey everything trend?

I just don't understand the attraction. Why is everyone so obsessed with Mrs Hinch and having every inch of their house grey so it looks like a negative? Is it just me who's miserable or something.. I just don't understand it!

I’m not sure how a trend is a con. Mainly things become a trend because people like it at that time.

Everything has at some point been a trend, be it colourful rooms, or the magnolia /shiny brown sofa combo, or the stencilling on the wall, peach, terracotta, Scandi, wallpaper borders, even coloured bathroom suites, brightly coloured clashing kitchen tiles, it’s all been a trend at some point.

What difference does it make if it’s a trend of yesteryear or a trend of today, very few people decorate their homes in a way to be fashionable but they secretly hate. They do it because they really like it.

There are many trends right now, grey through to navy and copper, rode gold, sage greens, blush pink, . It’s really just what’s current, but also what people like

Personally I can’t get het up about how people decorate their homes. Not to the extent I’d be hurling abuse on line “awful, tacky, cheap, naff, hideous”

My home isn’t Grey, it’s actually mainly shades of green from F&L’s french grey in one room (which is actually green) to pale Eau de nil in another . And then oyster, or even white in other rooms. With some in your face wall paper.

However I’ve seen lots of homes I think look lovely in grey, elegant, calming and cosy. Others less to my taste, but the same can be said for other decor choices, some are great, others not quite to my liking, as I’m sure some folks would think about mine. Personally I am not a fan of anything brightly coloured or too stark and white.

Somethings not right though when you feel the need to “understand” some randoms decor choices or become venomous about it.

We all have different tastes, hence so many trends now and over the years, and it’s not a stretch to understand that maybe just maybe someone has different tastes to you.

@SurroundedByIdiotsEverywhere

Only sheeple follow trends... Do/have what you like, that is actually setting the trend - your trend!

Same goes for fashion, be individual and do not fall for the con!

“Sheeple”? Original .. how ironic

Looking on rightmove, the number of houses that are 50 shades of grey is amazing and many don't look good! In our village there is one for sale where the fencing is dark grey with white post-caps and the drive is also grey, looks hideous.

nevermorelenore · 09/10/2020 17:24

This is the most depressing grey item I've ever seen. Take all the fun and colour out your kids lives!

I’m fine with people loving trends. I’ve nothing against pale pink blush or velvet. They are both lovely.

But grey cannot possibly be cosy, cheerful, lively etc. Unless you are an elephant, grey is the colour of illness and death.

It is like if I painted a room in yellow and black and said it was just a trend.

Janegrey333 · 09/10/2020 18:03

@Bluntness100
Not everyone needs to follow trends. Some people have their own ideas and their own style. They don’t have to slavishly follow what others do.

Janegrey333 · 09/10/2020 18:08

I don't know anything about Mrs Hinch but I think grey is a bit Homes Under The Hammer.

😆

Localocal · 09/10/2020 18:42

I don't find grey calming. I find it depressing.

SionnachRua · 09/10/2020 18:54

3.8 million followers on Instagram for cleaning, dear God...well, if they're getting something out of it good for them.

Personally I like a touch of grey but her house is ott. Would rather follow something like rabbitt_ranch on Insta...wouldn't do my house in her style but a much more interesting interior to look at.

I used to work in the fashion industry & I would definitely say trends were not necessarily dictated by what people liked. Lots of people do need direction, some because they have no clue, some because they are happy to go with what's on trend. Often the more something is seen the more desirable it is, before it's over exposed. Lots of people follow trends because they want their home to say something about them.

Everyone knows grey is very working class. Middle class people have one wall painted in a Dulux copy of Farrow and Balls Hague Blue.

I disagree. Grey was fashionable a few years ago but then it went mainstream. Blue is also following the grey trend. Pantone's 2020 colour was classic blue. For 2021 it's aqua. Which may or not be popular.
Zoflorabore · 09/10/2020 20:06

Working class here with REAL F and B paint. Maybe you need to sit down after reading that. Oh and I fucking love grey too Grin

Stripesnomore · 09/10/2020 20:24

Blue is the colour of the sky. It is not going to go in or out of fashion.

annoyedofnorwich · 09/10/2020 23:01

Grey is a bit 2017/2018. Oh, and a bit boring. It is ok, would use it in some rooms but wouldn't want a whole house of it. Mrs Hinch, well I'm not really interested in cleaning but if it keeps her happy fair enough.

So is grey.
BrazenlyDefying · 10/10/2020 11:15

@whoopma

Grey is the new magnolia & it works. The issue is when you add to the grey walls with a grey sofa, grey rug, grey cushion & some silver shiny shite.
Agree with this. Grey in moderation is fine. It's when you have grey everything that it crosses the line into awful.
SarahBellam · 10/10/2020 11:25

I was raised catholic and grey rooms always make me think of purgatory - the waiting room where hang out until they decide whether you’re going to heaven or hell. I don’t know why 😂

I think of them as soulless so the idea of purgatory fits.
CoffeeChouxBun · 10/10/2020 13:13

@SarahBellam Didn't Pope Francis do away with purgatory???

EmpressoftheMundane · 10/10/2020 16:50

@whoopma and @BrazenlyDefying

Agree, grey is just a neutral backdrop like beige or white. They all look best layered with colour.

Grey simply shows you have no imagination or flair when it comes to interior design.

Some nice use of grey here. I find dark grey oppressive but quite like the lighter shades.

If you have warm toned flooring (mine is hardwood in a warm honey colour) you can cool down a room very nicely with grey on the walls.
