To not understand the Hinch/grey everything trend?

I just don't understand the attraction. Why is everyone so obsessed with Mrs Hinch and having every inch of their house grey so it looks like a negative? Is it just me who's miserable or something.. I just don't understand it!

Not everyone is obsessed with Mrs Hinch, I'm certainly not. I will admit that my house is mostly grey though. Perhaps it's time I did the dusting.

BlueJava · 07/10/2020 22:00

Personally I haven't gone "all out" on the grey - but all our walls are white and 3 of the bedrooms have grey/white furniture. It works well because it's light, but not all just plain white. You can then throw in a bit of color and there is no clash!

CSIblonde · 07/10/2020 22:04

The cleaners on You Tube make be die : 4 diff products to whiten tile grout. Me: bleach cleaning spray,, leave for half an hour then ruinse. If youre addicted to You Tube apartment tours, everything is blinding white, with a grey couch & cream rug. I had a 100% cotton white duvet cover, within 3days it looked awful & washed terribly ( looked like a crumpled shroud). I've gone back to polycotton mix pastel pattern thanks v much. .

xanthippe8 · 07/10/2020 22:10

Crumpled shroud!
Grin.

I think grey looks bright and fresh. It wins my vote.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 07/10/2020 22:26

Loads of people probably don't know how to clean a house or how often they should do things.

Or we don't care Grin

Grey can look good in the right setting, and when it's the right tone for the setting and light of the room etc. But blanket grey-because-it's-fashionable-and-Mrs-Hinch-does-it, especially when combined with silvery/mirrored/faux-lux stuff is as naff AF. It's so ubiquitous it's becoming "that' look that people go for when they've tarted a place up for a quick turnaround sale.

Strange having so many Mrs H threads - hasn’t she got a book out 🙄

NotMeNoNo · 07/10/2020 22:38

Grey is a great neutral and background for colour but with only shades of monochrome its hard to avoid just looking very undaventurous.

Off whites (magnolia and similar) are ok they are just off trend at the moment. They'll be back.

YANBU.

If I live to be 100 I’ll never understand the grey paint/wallpaper thing. We live in Britain: the skies are grey for 9 months of the year. Why would you want to replicate that indoors?!

As for cleaning all day long...get a life...

Spot on.

I have all grey tiles in my bathroom which I massively regret. A little grey can bring elegance to a room but all grey interior is super depressing to me and very outdated now.

I know someone who has grey wood floor, grey walls, grey sofa, grey cushions, grey table, grey chairs etr, just find that it washed everything out and creates a very cold and sad feeling.

PickAChew · 07/10/2020 23:23

A bit of grey is fine but Mrs hinch's is pretty monochrome.

I've ended up with a bit of grey, despite professing to hate it. Our kitchen dining room (garden room according to the estate agent but that's just wanky) is "rolling fog pale" which is just a very pale greige, or dark white. It's a south facing room so it just takes the glare off. Our dark hall is "gauze mid" which is a pale blue grey and is quite luminous. Bedrooms and main bathroom are more colourful, though.

Stripesnomore · 07/10/2020 23:42

MN sometimes makes me feel like I am in a parallel universe. I have never been inside a house where anyone painted a wall grey. It just seems so drab.

AlwaysLatte · 08/10/2020 00:03

Luckily my husband is clutching his pearls at everything non-white (some therapy and a large glass of brandy might at least help him look at the F&B sample book I bought). But I'm pretty sure neither of us will be going all out for grey and will likely go for some sort of Cat Sick white or something. Having said that my son has indigo/grey walls with one orange one and it looks great in his room.

FabulouslyFab · 08/10/2020 07:22

@BatonRouge

I inherited grey walls all over the entire bloody house. Like living in a decommissioned submarine.
Love it!! 😂😂
LolaSmiles · 08/10/2020 07:28

I like grey, if it's part of a room with other colours.

I hate the grey, pile carpets, mirrored shit, grey velvet, sparkles look, complete with twigs woven into a heart.

Each to their own, but that second look is filed in my head with 'bath' signs in bathrooms and live, laugh, love words on the wall.

Fizbosshoes · 08/10/2020 07:35

I dont hate grey but I wouldnt want my whole house done in it, and I would need some colours with it. DD wanted her bedroom grey but she has a coloured lampshade and blind.

Fluffybutter · 08/10/2020 07:42

The two aren’t interchangeable.
I can’t stand that Hinch woman but I love grey and have a lot of it in my house but we always pair it with bright soft furnishings and wall art. I’d rather grey over white, cream or yellow ..
I don’t “get” striped carpets on stairs but I’m not fussed what other people choose .

Florencex · 08/10/2020 07:58

I used to have cream or beige carpets, I now have light to mid grey in lounge, bedrooms, hall and landings. It is easier to match colours to than the brown tones. I don’t understand the comments about being cold (on another grey thread), I find it very warm. I have some light grey walls but most walls are ivory, a couple of feature walls are papered and I use furnishings to add colour.

EerilyDeleted · 08/10/2020 09:02

I don't mind a small amount of grey, but don't like the "everything in different shades of grey" look. I think it will look very dated soon.

RincewindsHat · 08/10/2020 09:12

I don't get it either, but then a lot of people would probably find my taste too colourful! I loathe all grey everything and utterly detest magnolia walls - before I even moved into my very magnolia house I had the whole thing repainted so I could relax surrounded by colours I love :) each to their own, make your house a home in whatever way works for you.

Wallabyone · 08/10/2020 09:13

I don't mind grey, I don't mind Hinch, but am I the only one astounded by the amount of pastry consumed in that house?!🙈

KizzyWayfarer · 08/10/2020 09:16

Cream walls for me all the way. I think that the interest and colour in a room comes from the curtains / pictures / furniture etc. And cream walls are a sort of invisible backdrop, just giving a vague sense of a light, airy room. Coloured walls can make it feel a bit claustrophobic, grey walls sound like they could be depressing, but to be honest I don’t know anyone who has them (not that I’ve actually been going into people’s homes much recently...). Going by this thread my taste is quite dated, but surely no one is trendy enough to want us all to be identical.

cherish123 · 08/10/2020 17:36

Does everyone have a grey house? I have some grey but most people I know don't.

Loulablake · 08/10/2020 17:48

I remember years ago my mum watched this home improvement show about an American woman selling your house (can’t remember the name) she painted everything magnolia, and got rid of clutter. how is it any different other than shade lol
