To not understand the Hinch/grey everything trend?

I just don't understand the attraction. Why is everyone so obsessed with Mrs Hinch and having every inch of their house grey so it looks like a negative? Is it just me who's miserable or something.. I just don't understand it!

@Loulablake

I remember years ago my mum watched this home improvement show about an American woman selling your house (can’t remember the name) she painted everything magnolia, and got rid of clutter. how is it any different other than shade lol
The House Doctor? I used to watch that. And yes her usual prescription was paint everything neutral and get rid of clutter. Which does work if you’re trying to sell your house I think.

In contrast she did an episode showcasing one of her homes, I forget where it was. But very Mexican, Mediterranean inspired, lots of gorgeous colour everywhere!

Anyway back to the grey thing. From what I can see on Instagram it’s not just grey anymore. It’s grey, with mirrored or crushed velvet furniture and for colour.....

Blush pink. I’m seeing that everywhere. No judgement at all, it’s nice just not my taste. But yes blush pink is the accent colour right now it seems.

@LolaSmiles Oh come on. Why is it that when it's a style you don't agree with - its because they're sheep who can't think for themselves.

But something you do agree with - you're not following the herd? Because let's be honest, the amount of threads on MN about a hatred of grey seems like way more of a trend than people actually using grey at this point.

Quaagars · 08/10/2020 20:42

I used to follow her but I unfollowed. I don’t get the hype. I prefer cleaning pages where they are actually cleaning dirty things and you can see the difference. She is cleaning her already clean home
most of the time

See, that's where we're all different - I follow her, and find her stories uplifting (for want of a better word)
I know she doesn't exactly have a messy home to start with (needs to see here lol) but it's the fact can motivate, lift out of a funk if feeling down or anxious.
Think that's where she's great, as you say if it's serious cleaning you want and nothing else there's other IG accounts to go to.

Quaagars · 08/10/2020 20:43

Doh bold fail

Quaagars · 08/10/2020 20:46

The House Doctor? I used to watch that

Aw man, past blast!! Used to love watching that lol, had forgotten all about it Grin
See, yes that was all about neutral colours for if you were trying to sell your home and was having no success.
I mean it's all very well loving bright colours, say deep purple in the bedroom, kids bedrooms with Barbie wallpaper or whatever, but when it comes to selling calm it the fuck down to appeal to the majority audince Smile
That kind of thing

Audreyseyebrows · 08/10/2020 21:19

Shit, after posting on here I went to the bathroom and realised that I have grey rugs. Maybe I am trendy after all!

LolaSmiles · 09/10/2020 07:20

LivingoffCoffee
I have a couple of grey rooms so it's nothing to do with disliking the colour grey. I happen to really dislike magnolia though.

There's many ways to style any colour. I'm not buying the idea that a sudden surge in grey and white everything, grey and fluffy carpets, grey velvet sofas, mirrored stuff etc is because all these people suddenly realised that was just so their style.

Why would home decoration be any different from fashion:
Some people have their own style and are comfortable in certain styles and colours, regardless of them being in or our of fashion
Others have their own staple style and add in bits from each season throughout the year
Others don't think for themselves and will wear whatever is 'in' because they like the feeling of being 'in' (regardless of how it actually looks on them)?

Certain interior design trends are no different from people wearing fast fashion trends. Eg Those signs that say 'bathe' in the bathroom, the Hinch grey look, pastel crushed velvet sofas, the bold wallpapered feature wall a la Changing Rooms.

Of course the aim of Mrs Hinch is to get her followers to follow the trend. That's how she makes money by telling people where to buy stuff she's been given or has been paid to promote. She's no different from other influencers in that's respect, but influencers only work if there is a herd to be influenced.

CoffeeChouxBun · 09/10/2020 08:14

Grey has been an enduring interiors trend. There are lots of shades and it's very versatile and easy to mix with lots of other colours. I'd say it has almost become a classic/ neutral.
Personally, I don't like it. I succumbed to the trend and made the mistake of buying a grey bedroom carpet and realise I much prefer beigey neutrals.
I don't know anything about Mrs Hinch but I think grey is a bit Homes Under The Hammer.

Besom · 09/10/2020 08:28

I read grey is over and beige/cream neutrals are back in. That obviously doesn't matter if you like it though.

Ddot · 09/10/2020 08:38

Different strokes for different folks, if grey makes you happy fair play to you, I prefer creams, whites mixed with brights. Rooms without colour in my humble opinion are depressing. But my home looks like unicorn threw up init, I like it that way. Antique mixed with modern, it's an oldish house so suits it. In my humble opinion haha

StCharlotte · 09/10/2020 08:59

I'm a wallpaper girl myself and I don't have grey anywhere but I think it looks great especialy in more modern houses and it's obviously here to stay.

Except for exterior woodwork and doors etc - looks like undercoat to me.

LovelyIssues · 09/10/2020 09:48

I think it looks really chavvy so YANBU OP

AlpineSnow · 09/10/2020 09:52

I loved the House Doctor Ann Maurice. (Pronounced Maureece) She used to say "So much clutter!" in an American accent. She had really good chemistry with her English co presenter Alistair someone i thought

Yoffel · 09/10/2020 10:15

Grey walls are fine but if it’s grey ‘everything’ (with the velvet and mirrors) its too matchy-matchy and devoid of personality. Mrs Hinch’s home looks like she swept all the shelves from a couple of aisles from The Range straight into her trolley.

JoeCalFuckingZaghe · 09/10/2020 10:48

The grey thing isn't for me, and the thick carpet, mirrored furniture and crushed velvet stuff is gaudy as hell, but if you like it, go for it. I don't have the live there.

Mrs Hinch is dangerous in my opinion. She has no care for proper chemical safety and mixes products not meant for mixing (and will state this on the bottle!). The sheer amount of toxic products she uses, spraying fabric conditioner onto the sofa is doing to destroy it and onto the bloody radiator?! Idiot. And people buy into this.

Barney60 · 09/10/2020 10:56

Dont follow Mrs Hinch, but i do dislike grey, Its a miserable winters day colour, to me very depressing, but very easily matched with other colours goes with everything. Good job were all different.

ShinyPie · 09/10/2020 11:21

@oakleaffy

Those bloody words on walls are so passé now, surely?

''EAT''

''SOAK''

''SHAG''

As if someone is slightly losing their marbles and thinks ''What do I need to do in this room?
Oh..I see ''EAT''

The childish side of me wanted letters in the bathroom spelling 'POO,' or a sign reading 'Home is where the shart is.' Blush
Flusteredcustard · 09/10/2020 11:23

I'd not mind a very pale grey but honestly don't like the overgreying of houses, to me it reminds me of old offices, or factories, some people have sofas that remind me of where you wait when you have your car in at the garage, now sensible to have grey chairs there so oily grubby marks don't show up but in a home? And yes I saw a dark grey painted exterior the other day and thought how depressing if everyone did that. As someone brought up in a grimy northern industrial town who remembers how dark the houses were before they were cleaned off, who wants that, formerly grimy black industrial towns look a million times better cleaned up, I dan't believe people want to return to that sort of thing

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 09/10/2020 11:24

There’s no accounting for taste - or for the urge to follow whatever happens to be fashionable.

I’ve never understood the grey thing either - not in a country where all too often you only have to look out of the window.

SweetPetrichor · 09/10/2020 11:44

Grey is fine in little bits here and there, but the big difference Bentsen grey and magnolia is the fact that magnolia is warm and grey is cold. Living in dreary Scotland, the last thing I’d want is a cold coloured house.
I love my PILs house cause every room is a colour and it feels homely. The kitchen is green, living room burgundy, hall blue...that’s what I like. Our house is rented with cream carpets and white walls. Wouldn’t be my choice but it’s pleasantly neutral.
The whole grey vibe seems to go hand in hand with the tacky mirrored surfaces and cheap shiny tchotchkes. It’s soulless. But each to their own...it’d be a boring world if we were all the same!

Theoldwrinkley · 09/10/2020 12:35

Who is Mrs Hinch?

misskatamari · 09/10/2020 12:41

Each to their own. I do love grey, but also love bright colours, so i like grey/white walls and furnitiure, and colour elsewhere. I don't personally like the all grey look that people go for, i do find it a bit boring and blah, but I also reeally hate neutrals, so anything beige/brown/magnoila, i detest. But some people love that colour palette. I don't really care what others do in their homes, as long as they are happy with it, it's none of my business, but yes I don't "get" the total "sea of grey" look myself

Only sheeple follow trends... Do/have what you like, that is actually setting the trend - your trend!

Same goes for fashion, be individual and do not fall for the con!
