To not understand the Hinch/grey everything trend?

I just don't understand the attraction. Why is everyone so obsessed with Mrs Hinch and having every inch of their house grey so it looks like a negative? Is it just me who's miserable or something.. I just don't understand it!

OP posts:

My SIL is obsessed with having everything grey.

I think it can look nice, especially if it’s got other colours tied in, but not sure I’d want it in every single room like my SIL (she just has everything grey and white - it looks quite depressing to me)

But hey, whatever floats your boat!

CambsAlways · 08/10/2020 17:59

I had our lounge diner decorated grey long before Mrs Hinch was on the scene, good luck to her she’s found a gap in the market and is very successful, at the moment we are decorating our hall stairs and landing in silver grey, it’s very calming colour cornforth white! Intend to chose bright colour to make it pop in blinds etc, we eventually will paint our whole house interior in it, with dif pops of colour in each room, not a fan of browns creams each to their own

Audreyseyebrows · 08/10/2020 17:59

I’m not into grey, it’s a bit unimaginative but I love the idea of a crushed velvet sofa.

My house is the complete opposite. It’s probably more psychedelic junk shop chic that would give most people a headache. I work in a clinical environment so crave colours.

WellGoshDarnIt · 08/10/2020 18:11

According to the posters on Tattle, (which is so vicious, it makes MN look positively genteel), it's not £5k she charges per post, it's £40k. Someone contacted her management company and pretended to be interested in using her to promote their product. That £40k gets you 4 or 5 frames on her Insta stories. She really is nothing more than a very astute saleswoman with a stellar team behind her. I actually don't mind her - if people are daft enough to pay her that sort of money then fair play to her. The grey house thing is weird and soulless though.

Imnotahugger · 08/10/2020 18:17

I love grey, my whole house is grey, but I’ve never looked at one post from Mrs Hinch. I just happen to like grey 🤷🏻‍♀️

Sheknowsaboutme · 08/10/2020 18:26

I like my home to have its own style. My taste, not bland, grey, clean lines.

These instagram houses have no soul.

And ive been using Zoflora before Hinch was born. Its older than her great gran!

FelicisNox · 08/10/2020 18:29

YABU re: grey thing, it's just another neutral tone, no different to beige and it's just a trend at the moment. It's not hurting anyone and I'm getting a bit sick of these bitchy judgemental threads; if you don't like something fine, but leave others to their little piece of happiness. (And no, my house is not grey).

Regarding Hinch: that's a sore topic with me as I was bullied out by one of their nasty admins but the whole concept is more to do with rediscovering the lost art of cleaning your house properly, with lost "hacks" and it's been harnessed as a way of managing severe anxiety so whilst I hate the Hinch Army... I do get the "need" for such groups so again, yeah, YABU.

Cheeseboardandmincepies · 08/10/2020 18:31

She’s basically teaching them to spend their money on crap. She doesn’t teach them cleaning, she didn’t even know how to clean at one point misusing products etc.

Bugbabe1970 · 08/10/2020 18:40

Herd mentality
People are too afraid to go with what they really want in their homes in case others don’t like it

Bakingcupcake · 08/10/2020 18:48

Yes very chavvy...everything different shades of grey how f*ing boring too!! Its a fad and will no doubt go out of fashion

LivingoffCoffee · 08/10/2020 18:59

By that logic, no one would have grey in their house based of the judgment on this thread.

Why can't it just be some people like something that you don't?

WendyE · 08/10/2020 19:06

I don't mind the 'Hinch' concept - some of the tips are useful after all.

However I can't stand seeing grey everywhere - it's so depressing and makes rooms look like hospital wards. Yuk. Years ago people used to moan about magnolia, but at least there is some warmth in the colour.

Audreyseyebrows · 08/10/2020 19:15

@FelicisNox Bullied out of what? Instagram? What did you do?!

Does she actually give cleaning tips though? I do follow her and it seems to be more about her ‘hinch hauls’, the dog and the baby. I can’t remember the last time I saw a tip (sadly clicking my fingers like she does doesn’t result in a tidy room).
I do like her but I don’t think she’s a cleaning account anymore than I’m an actual eyebrow.

LolaSmiles · 08/10/2020 19:16

They can, just like other people are able to comment that they don't like it.

Zoejj77 · 08/10/2020 19:20

The grey trend can be lovely but it’s soooo old now I think that’s why it seems every one has it and a bit tacky it’s like the new magnolia

64sNewName · 08/10/2020 19:23

Just had a look at her IG. Not my style really, but her baby is extremely sweet Smile

LivingoffCoffee · 08/10/2020 19:41

Never said you couldn't.

If you read my post, you would know I was commenting on a PP suggesting that people don't actually like grey, they're just following herd mentality and afraid of using another colour for fear of judgment.

I'm suggesting the (apparently radical) idea that people actually like different design styles and no one gives a shit if you like it or not.

EmpressoftheMundane · 08/10/2020 19:49

I’ve seen Hinch Grey referred to on Missy before. I assumed it was a Farrow and Ball colour! Just googled her. Not quite.

Not my style at all, but good for her. She’s got a lovely family and is obviously devoted to her home and family. (Trying really hard not to be a jerk and say something snooty about her taste. Not really succeeding...)

Stripesnomore · 08/10/2020 19:56

WellGosh, the £40k is for product placement.

I said she got £5k per video not including product placement. That means for uploading a video on YouTube, she makes the 5k from the ads YouTube stick on her videos. Anything she makes from companies giving her money for including their products is extra.

Skysblue · 08/10/2020 20:05

Grey is depressing and ugly. It’ll go out of fashion soon.

Pomegranatespompom · 08/10/2020 20:17

40k ? People are absolutely barmy. I do dislike these influencer shenanigans.

LolaSmiles · 08/10/2020 20:20

LivingoffCoffee
They have a point though.

If we think about how many seasons of homeward tat gets churned out each year, how many colour trends for interiors come out then that's a lot of people who are updating their homes based on what's in fashion rather than because they especially like a certain style.

We saw something similar when sofa shopping and there were lots of high fashion sofas that were obviously going to date terribly (crushed velvet in grey, pale pink and purple).

More people are probably influenced by influencers and trends than they'd care to admit.

WellGoshDarnIt · 08/10/2020 20:25

@Stripesnomore - god, I didn't realise it was that much for her youtube stuff! So £5k for youtube, £40k for product placement, plus the 'book' money...no wonder she's allegedly worth £2.5m!

Stripesnomore · 08/10/2020 20:31

I’m guessing at some point she will buy a bigger house with all the money?

Anyway, it must work on foolish people like me. I have bought a minky cloth, some zoflora and have put unstoppables in an organza bag and shoved it inside a cushion.

Now I just have to actually clean something...

marmite79 · 08/10/2020 20:36

I used to follow her but I unfollowed. I don’t get the hype. I prefer cleaning pages where they are actually cleaning dirty things and you can see the difference. She is cleaning her already clean home
most of the time.

Also the grey isn’t for me either. Admittedly I don’t try a grey theme in my living room a few years ago (way before the craze). I didn’t like it. I changed to something with colour!
