To not understand the Hinch/grey everything trend?

I just don't understand the attraction. Why is everyone so obsessed with Mrs Hinch and having every inch of their house grey so it looks like a negative? Is it just me who's miserable or something.. I just don't understand it!

OP posts:
QueenOllie · 07/10/2020 17:45

I find grey really calming, I mean my living room has a grey sofa, grey walls and grey carpet Grin but it's definitely not the standard "grey home" you would think of

HOkieCOkie · 07/10/2020 17:47

I love Mrs Hinch, her house isn’t styled to my tastes but as she says herself “it would be boring to all be the same.”

lampshadery · 07/10/2020 17:49

I don't get it either, it's just so cold. A little bit of grey is nice, but I can't understand it when everything is grey and silver and as someone else said it looks like a photo negative.

It will date terribly and then come round again in 40 years!

Whiskyinajar · 07/10/2020 17:50

It's not especially my taste but I do think it looks good and clean. My son's bedroom is done in a lovely pale grey and looks nice.

I don't follow Hinch so cannot comment but I've a f4iend who loves the grey walls look and her home looks lovely.

RainbowReader · 07/10/2020 17:54

YANBU OP, my mum and I were only discussing this the other day. My lounge is teal and purple scheme and feels so cosy. I always worry about spilling stuff in grey rooms

FrankieChips · 07/10/2020 17:56

It looks really tacky. A few houses around here have painted the front of their houses grey, paved over the garden and no flowers. Looks awful. These are 1930s houses so they look lovely with a garden.

BashfulClam · 07/10/2020 18:01

What dies it have to do with you? Maybe she’d hate your decor. All that matters is she likes it, she paid for it and she isn’t harming anyone. Who made you the decor police. I really have people who slag off others choices for their own home as if they are the epitome of style. My mum sneered at my nice wallpaper when she has a border in between 2 different types of wallpaper, neither of us are wrong we are allowed to choose how our own homes look,

Nandocushion · 07/10/2020 18:03

I don't know who Mrs Hinch is but I like gray. It's just a neutral, like any other neutral really. My house has lots of warm wood in it so it looks good with cooler tones like gray and parchment for balance.

I don't understand or like wallpaper, and certainly not on a 'feature wall'. Each to their own!

Elsiebear90 · 07/10/2020 18:04

I think a bit of grey is fine, it’s when it’s grey walls, sofa, carpet, lamp etc, that it’s too much and looks very cheap imo.

Stilllightingcandles · 07/10/2020 18:09

Each to their own. Sorry @RainbowReader but a teal and purple room sounds horrible to me. Like I would get a headache somewhere like that.

My house is all neutrals. I like it as I like to change things. My room is light grey, if I see a lovely pair of blue sheets I get them, same with green/yellow/pink. It all looks lovely. My sitting room is light grey too with yellow cushions and blankets. I do have a teal bedroom and dark green bedroom but I keep the furniture and sheets white and neutral so it’s not a clash of colours.

I agree grey walls/carpet/couch/silver accessories can be a bit much.

PattyPan · 07/10/2020 18:10

Yanbu, when I was a student I lived in a room with practically no natural light and grey walls and I’m not exaggerating when I say I think it was a contributing factor to me developing depression! Grey is the opposite of homely to me, I don’t understand the appeal at all.

I don’t really know much about Mrs Hinch but I don’t like her use of zoflora/bleach - it’s bad for the environment, it’s bad for your health. I saw a picture of her cleaning basket and thought it was a huge waste of money and resources to have a different spray for everything when vinegar and bicarb of soda would replace pretty much all of them.

Fannybawz · 07/10/2020 18:12

After the fucking crap fest of 2020 I can virtually guarantee that more cheering colours will be be big time

My house looks like it’s been decorated on acid Grin

madcatladyforever · 07/10/2020 18:14

I like a tidy house but I loathe grey and neutrals, I have all the colours of the rainbow at home, lovely rugs, throws and cushions, all kinds of interesting things out on display but that doesn't mean I can't be neat and tidy but it's definitely a home not a hotel.
When I get home I can kick off my shoes and really feel that I am in my own lovely space.
My home office is very well organised but it's bright yellow and feels like sunshine.I have interesting box pictures that I made and a bright mandala wall hanging.
I feel better as soon as I go in there.

sst1234 · 07/10/2020 18:14

There’s grey and there’s trashy. Grey can be done in an understated way but Mrs Hinch style is a bit tacky.

gingerwhingerwife · 07/10/2020 18:18

I think grey is done now isn't it? Green is the new grey

hammeringinmyhead · 07/10/2020 18:21

It's not really the grey though in her case that make it look like an explosion in B&M - it's the silver grey wallpaper, chandeliers, candlesticks, mirrored frames and fake white roses.

LeSquigh · 07/10/2020 18:23

Grey is the new magnolia. Magnolia/cream are very old fashioned and look very outdated. Grey is a great neutral tone. We live in a rental so cant change the walls but if we could it would be grey all the way. it can be jazzed up with a few bright bits and looks good with bright stuff whereas cream and brown really do not.

SideAfries · 07/10/2020 18:26

ALL grey & white houses have become the ‘live, laugh, love’ of today IMO. 😬

Janegrey333 · 07/10/2020 18:26

Despite my username, I hate that grey look. However, I draw the line at declaring it is tacky.

Fishfingersandwichplease · 07/10/2020 18:26

I have always liked grey even before Mrs Hinch came along. My bedroom used to be black and white but just had it done in grey as not quite so harsh. But loads of colours go with it so easy to jazz it up l think. Wouldn't want my whole house done in it though!

Janegrey333 · 07/10/2020 18:27

I imagine they have the sign thing up there too, though. In grey.
LivingoffCoffee · 07/10/2020 18:28

@vanillandhoney

I swear more people complain about grey decor than actually have grey decor.
My thoughts exactly!
areyoubeingserviced · 07/10/2020 18:28

It’s not so much the grey as grey can be nice if it’s subtle.
The problem is definitely the diamanté and silver accessories along with the crushed velvet sofas. It’s just so unimaginative and lacks class.

Chickychickydodah · 07/10/2020 18:28

I’m with @SpongebobNoPants, I hate the crushed velvet sofas too, I like the grey but also like a big of colour with it too

ArcherDog · 07/10/2020 18:29

I have a wallpapered grey feature wall Grin A treble sin!
