To not understand the Hinch/grey everything trend?

I just don't understand the attraction. Why is everyone so obsessed with Mrs Hinch and having every inch of their house grey so it looks like a negative? Is it just me who's miserable or something.. I just don't understand it!

I think it’s a safe option for people who don’t have a good eye for interior design. I don’t mean that in a snarky way, but having an understanding of how colours work together and using them well is a skill which not everybody has. It’s easy to stick with grey and neutrals which won’t clash, especially when you have a blueprint for what to do in the form of many Instagram accounts showing homes decorated in that style.

I must admit I get very bored of seeing an endless sea of grey carpets, mirrored furniture, velvet sofas, fake hydrangeas and coffee table books about Chanel, but since I don’t have to live in those houses it’s not really any of my business!

This room is awful:

Larsingsong · 07/10/2020 18:32

I don't mind grey within reason! I did sample it in my bedroom, but a pale blush wall with grey accessories looked much warmer.

I think grey looks better complemented with other colours, pale, neutral, bold whatever.....just not grey walls, carpet, sofa, bedding and not one jot of colour or contrast. Grey is a hard colour to get right I think, it easily looks cold and boring.

Grey today will be the magnolia of tomorrow. Homes would be more pleasant and more of the earth’s resources would be saved if we each used our creativity with home decor rather than following trends.

I really like that room. Everybody has different taste.

I hate varnished pine wood. I hate dark or overly bright colours. I hate too much clutter and tat and ornaments.

Janegrey333 · 07/10/2020 18:37

Crushed velvet and mirrored furniture is not to my taste but if someone likes it, fair enough.

Zoflorabore · 07/10/2020 18:38

I love white and grey with pops of colour.

My whole house is painted white with grey floors and I can accessorise so easily from that if I don’t like the accent colour. It looks clean and fresh.

I can’t stand magnolia.

bananachocolate · 07/10/2020 18:38

She's certainly taken is quite far but I like grey as a good neutral background colour. My bedroom wallpaper and curtains are grey but I have yellow accents and it's really warm and cosy. I don't love the crushed velvet/mirrored surfaces but each to their own I suppose

DotTheCaddy · 07/10/2020 18:42

Grey is nice, in moderation. It is definitely not on trend though, current trends are navy/forest green and crazy wallpaper.

Most of Mumsnet will agree with you because everyone has the most colourful unique taste with more bookcases and TVs and lots of nick nacks from their travels and nothing that looks like it could come from B&M Grin

DotTheCaddy · 07/10/2020 18:42

More bookcases than TVs**

feistyoneyouare · 07/10/2020 18:44

At least it's not magnolia.

FoxtrotEcho · 07/10/2020 18:44

Anything too matchy-matchy looks weird in my opinion.

But people like what they like. If wall-to-wall grey and silver makes you happy, then knock yourself out. I love seeing what different people make of their homes.

ZaraW · 07/10/2020 18:45

YABU because this subject is always talked about. If you love grey use it, if not it's not compulsory. My walls are white I don't care what anyone else thinks.

TheVanguardSix · 07/10/2020 18:45

I need warmth. I don't like crisp and clean unless I'm living in a warm climate like the one I grew up in (lots of open plan, white walls, Japanese sliding doors in our 70s ranch house- Southern California, if you're curious). But in this rather dreary climate, I need warm, cozy tones. I really like the look of a lot of grey rooms but it's not for me personally.

Giggorata · 07/10/2020 18:45

Whoever it was said grey would come round again in 40 years, we had grey walls in our cottage in 1977!.
Nowadays I like colour.

CoronaIsWatching · 07/10/2020 18:46

Did a PP just call grey warm and cosy? Hmm I can't abide it, looks cold, cheap and tacky in my opinion

Mum and dad had grey walls and black ash furniture in the late 80s! Grin

Grey everything isn't my taste, but lots of people like it, and why shouldn't they? Using terms like chavvy and tacky is unnecessarily rude.

**She's basically teaching people how to clean. She's got some nifty tricks. Loads of people probably don't know how to clean a house or how often they should do things. I think it's great what she's doing!

She’s not a cleaner at all, she doesn’t get stuck into filthy mucky jobs. She is a sales woman earning commissions on all the products she promotes.
Her cleaning tips are :
Open zoflora, pour down sink - swipe up to buy and earn me commission
Spray counter with smelly spray stuff, wipe with cloth - swipe up to buy product and earn me commission.
Hoover an already hoovered floor - swipe to buy product and earn me commission

She’s is a sales woman, nothing more , nothing less

Yeah I’ve just been on her instagram and I don’t get how to follow what she’s doing or when to clean what? All I’ve learnt is to use zoflora and that she bloody loves putting things back after wiping down a surface
oakleaffy · 07/10/2020 18:55

Who on earth is Hinch?
Thought grey went out with the Ark?

TwentyViginti · 07/10/2020 18:56

@SideAfries

ALL grey & white houses have become the ‘live, laugh, love’ of today IMO. 😬
