To not understand the Hinch/grey everything trend?

I just don't understand the attraction. Why is everyone so obsessed with Mrs Hinch and having every inch of their house grey so it looks like a negative? Is it just me who's miserable or something.. I just don't understand it!

I loathe the grey everything, it's so dull. I deliberately decorate my house in bright cheery colours. Neighbour has been trying to house swap for s year. Can't understand why nobody wants her house. Because it's completely grey. The garden, fence, walls, carpet, furniture, bathroom, curtains.
It looks like a cell.
She won't hear it as it's stylish.
Give me cheery colours anyday!

HappyDinosaur · 07/10/2020 19:00

Our grey floor stones are over 150 years old so I'm not too worried about them being trendy or not!

nevermorelenore · 07/10/2020 19:01

I once flicked through the photos on a Rightmove listing and thought 'oh how pretentious, they've done them in black and white'. It wasn't until I got to a photo of their kid's room and saw a solitary blue blanket hanging from the crib railings that I realised they just really, really loved grey. In my defence, my eyesight is a bit crap.

Rich colours, lovely textures..Even neutral walls but full of interesting things...

Grey is so Cheerless, so ''Cell block H''

HowFastIsTooFast · 07/10/2020 19:02

I like the grey trend but I think when it's the whole house it can look a bit drab and show-homey. Our bedroom is white and grey but with accents of hot pink to liven it up a bit.

BatonRouge · 07/10/2020 19:04

I inherited grey walls all over the entire bloody house. Like living in a decommissioned submarine.

SlopesOff · 07/10/2020 19:10

Grey is the new magnolia. But dingier.

Thegreymethod · 07/10/2020 19:11

The grey thing is just personal taste isn't it? Some like it some don't, most of my house is grey walls and have been for years but I change things around to add colour new trends I like, Because I like it, honestly I don't understand people who get worked up about how others decorate their houses, seems so weird to me.
Not a huge fan on mrs hinch but she's not doing any harm is she?

notso · 07/10/2020 19:13

I've loved grey since my pink and grey bedroom in the late 80's.
We do have a lot of grey in the house but it's not Mrs Hinch style.
I don't like the matchy matchy look in any colour scheme, it's a bit impersonal. Although as a kid I loved matching stuff. My best friends Mum's had everything Eternal Beau, she'd even stencilled it on the walls I thought it was amazing!!

In most of the home accounts/groups I follow grey has been replaced with lots of navy, dark green and blush pink.

oakleaffy · 07/10/2020 19:15

Those bloody words on walls are so passé now, surely?

''EAT''

''SOAK''

''SHAG''

As if someone is slightly losing their marbles and thinks ''What do I need to do in this room?
Oh..I see ''EAT''

MirandaMarple · 07/10/2020 19:16

@Byllis

Couldn’t care less how people decorate their own homes, but the trend of painting the exterior of entire buildings dark grey should be outlawed!
Yes. Please.

Also, on the grey matter...I think a lot of it has to do with what's easily accessible and saves time. Trends that can easily be bought (inexpensively) on the high street.

A friend has had an extension built, redecorated whole house and it's grey. I don't think she's done it intentionally, she's just gone with what was easy without having to think too much. Busy Mum of three with stressful job etc. I was surprised as she has alternative tastes. Whereas it takes me weeks to find what I'm looking for, mostly its second hand as I dislike most things sold on the high street.

@Redcups64

My house was grey before the hinch, but since she joined Instagram everyone’s is now, so I’ve redecorated and have no grey as she has made it cheap looking.

I create trends, not follow them.

(I don’t, but it sounded good in my head😂)

My wallpaper is grey and white, it really opens up the room. I want a grey bathroom, I've seen petrol blue bathroom furniture. I find grey relaxing.

I'm very minimalist, though and have the much maligned leather couches, thanks to having house rabbits and needing easy clean everything.

AstiniMartini · 07/10/2020 19:26

my house has grey walls and white skirthing boards and dado rails. . i like it because it means I can change the looks according to the seasons- so grey and yellow and blue for summer. Green for spring. burnt russets for autumn and then greys and dark reds and greens for Christmas. Because you can easily change a look with candles, cushions and throws.

(I don't.... but if had unlimited cash this is what I would do.)

TattyMcBab · 07/10/2020 19:28

Before it was grey everywhere it was
shades of poo a cream to brown scale mostly used for interior decoration. At least grey goes with more things (even if it is a bit 1980s office block to me).

justasking111 · 07/10/2020 19:29

Redoing hall, new glazed doors, karndean flooring chose the paint Rock Salt it said. Well it is the palest shade of what I would call grey a violet tint in it. So accidentally gone with grey Grin

chubbalubs · 07/10/2020 19:32

I have grey, in my Lounge I have grey and white walls, grey carpets, and a grey corner sofa. But I also have mustard yellow throws, blankets, cushions, rug, and plant pots and stuff to warm it up. I have a grey and dusky pink bedroom too. I find the grey actually makes it look bigger, its neutral, and it's easy to change it up as I just have to get different coloured cushions, throws etc. I like it and that's all that matters Smile

YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 07/10/2020 19:34

@hammeringinmyhead

It's not really the grey though in her case that make it look like an explosion in B&M - it's the silver grey wallpaper, chandeliers, candlesticks, mirrored frames and fake white roses.
Absolutely this.

Grey in a Georgian or Regency house with original panelling looks absolutely lovely. It’s in keeping with the period.

Grey in modern homes* - such as those of the TOWIE cast, Mrs Hinch or the recently listed pad of Michelle Keegan - with ‘silver’ crushed velvet sofas and bed frames, mirrored picture frames, hat boxes of fake (diamanté studded) roses, acrylic chandeliers and overly manicured gardens with plants in more grey pots looks bloody awful.

*and also Victorian and Edwardian properties that have had the soul ripped out of them.

HesterShaw1 · 07/10/2020 19:37

Even the word grey makes me think of John Major.

It's a bland bland word.

MouseholeCat · 07/10/2020 19:39

I'm in the US and have grey walls, it's no more offensive than marigold or cream to me. Our grey walls in living areas and I think it looks nice enough, especially with our chestnut floors and aged wood furniture.
We are gradually repainting since we bought it and adding colour, but it was a very convenient shade to move into.

hammeringinmyhead · 07/10/2020 19:41

The thing is it's not even new. I've just googled Michelle Keegan's house and they bought about 7 years ago, around the same time we bought our new build for which the showhouse was entirely grey. Down to the kitchen units and the towels in the bathrooms. I reckon they decorated it years ago and have just left it.

Stripesnomore · 07/10/2020 19:48

Grey walls make me think of a prison or some kind of Soviet housing project like the abandoned high rises at Chernobyl.

I do like Mrs Hinch though. I can’t be doing with all the fragranced products and think they must be creating an allergy hell, but I enjoy her fun approach to cleaning.

Toilenstripes · 07/10/2020 19:50

I think it’s just easy to replicate for people who don’t have an eye for interior design, as a pp said. It’s quite expensive to play with different colours and make mistakes, so why not use grey as your base colour and then accent with yellow or pink? Or more grey. It’s not my taste but I understand why people do it.

Quaagars · 07/10/2020 19:55

People like different things.
What's so hard to understand?
