To expect Waitrose to deliver veg without proof of age?

WhatNoPeas · 05/10/2020 19:27

So Waitrose have just refused to deliver to my disabled 31 year old sister because she couldn't provide ID showing she was over 25.

There was no alcohol in her order, just veg and the like. The guy just took the shopping back from her doorstep and disappeared.

AIBU to think that she should be able to receive her (alcohol free) shopping without proving she's old enough to buy alcohol?

That is absurd.

Growuppeople · 05/10/2020 19:30

Did she ask why he needed ID? There’s got to be more to it

Sparklesocks · 05/10/2020 19:31

That does seem very OTT. What did Waitrose say when you spoke to them?

1Morewineplease · 05/10/2020 19:32

You need to email them.
I suspect they'd be horrified.

Redshoeblueshoe · 05/10/2020 19:33

Get on Twitter, they don't like this kind of publicity.

MrsShelton · 05/10/2020 19:33

what else did she order?

WhatNoPeas · 05/10/2020 19:33

There's honestly no more to it than that!

She called customer services and they seemed shocked and said they would send the driver straight back.

They didn't. They then called again to say they ID everyone who looks under 25 (she looks well over incidentally) even if they're just buying peas. No ID, no peas.

So let's get this right... According to waitrose you can't have a supermarket delivery unless your over 25....how bizarre...

WhatNoPeas · 05/10/2020 19:35

I don't know her full order except it was just food stuff. No alcohol, no alcohol free drinks (I know they can be funny about this) no bleach etc.

She struggles to get out to shop and I don't know what she'll do now.

Take it 59 twitter OP, they will soon send him back.

PlanDeRaccordement · 05/10/2020 19:37

You have to be 18 to receive online grocery delivery from Waitrose and they randomly ID anyone who looks under 25 to see if they are over 18. Why didn’t your sister have any ID at home?

Their website states
“How old do I have to be to receive a grocery order? We deliver to anyone who is 18 and over. Where our drivers believe someone is underage, and in accordance with Challenge 25, they will request to see a form of photo ID before continuing with the delivery. This is our policy regardless of whether there are age restricted items or not.”

Okokokitsout · 05/10/2020 19:37

I used to work for them it's in their delivery
t & cs. You need to be over 18 for any delivery not just alcohol. You may need I'd to prove this. Did you read the terms and conditions?

WhatNoPeas · 05/10/2020 19:44

@PlanDeRaccordement She does have ID somewhere in her house but she didn't know exactly where, and her disability means it would be quite an effort to find it, even assuming the guy was willing to wait on her doorstep for God knows how long. Also, she didn't understand why she would need to provide ID for vegetables.

I'm pretty sure most people are not ready with ID when getting food delivered.

For once I have an answer to something! This happened to my dds (14&11) so not quite the same scenario but our delivery driver came an hour early and I was still at work so he took it back and the reasoning was that although there was no alcohol etc there could mistakenly be something such as alcohol or sharp objects, cigarettes etc which does require ID.

PlanDeRaccordement · 05/10/2020 19:46

If they ask for ID, I’d assume they’d be willing to wait while you go get it even if a disability means it will take a few extra minutes. I know most people would be ready with ID for grocery delivery, but they’d have some form of ID somewhere at home.

PlanDeRaccordement · 05/10/2020 19:47

Sorry, meant to say I know most people would not be ready with ID. I agree with you.

StealthPolarBear · 05/10/2020 19:47

That is utterly ridiculous. I don't care that its in their conditions, it's stupid. Do other supermarkets do similar?

WhatNoPeas · 05/10/2020 19:48

It's it entirely relevant, but she's got about 30% grey hair (streaks not scattered) so no idea why he IDd her at all.

@Okokokitsout it wasn't my delivery and I don't get Waitrose so unsurprisingly I haven't read the ts and cs!

StealthPolarBear · 05/10/2020 19:48

If a 17 year old is living alone and self isolating what are they meant to do?

WhatNoPeas · 05/10/2020 19:48

not relevant I mean!

Ah...so you need to provide "ID" - actually not ID, but soemthing giving your age, even if you are old enough, just because the supermarket may have fucked up your order?

That seems logical.......not.

This ID for everything nonsense is really getting out of hand.

Agreed it's wank.
WhatNoPeas · 05/10/2020 19:52

They were happy to accept her credit card (only available to over 18s) in her name at her address for payment but not for ID.

OP posts:
lockeddownandcrazy · 05/10/2020 19:52

get a tesco delivery - they dont ID and happily deliver to my teenagers as long as there are no restricted items

NandosPeriometer · 05/10/2020 19:54

To accept an online food delivery you need to be 18 regardless of what you buy and which supermarket you get it from.
