To expect Waitrose to deliver veg without proof of age?

So Waitrose have just refused to deliver to my disabled 31 year old sister because she couldn't provide ID showing she was over 25.

There was no alcohol in her order, just veg and the like. The guy just took the shopping back from her doorstep and disappeared.

AIBU to think that she should be able to receive her (alcohol free) shopping without proving she's old enough to buy alcohol?

This can't be the policy for other places surely. I am abroad but my ten year old answer the door signs and take supermarket deliveries now we are WFH and still doing remote learning.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 05/10/2020 19:55

This is atrocious and I really hope you properly kick off about it.

CorianderLord · 05/10/2020 19:56

How weird, maybe try Hello Fresh or Gousto? I get those delivered and I look about 16.

NandosPeriometer · 05/10/2020 19:56

I had an Asda delivery arrive early and was told that they would wait until I got back rather than allow 16yo ds to sign. (just to clarify I would have been home for the slot)

ChaToilLeam · 05/10/2020 19:57

That’s totally ridiculous. Call them out on Twitter!

copperoliver · 05/10/2020 19:58

I'd ring up and complain. X

@lockeddownandcrazy

get a tesco delivery - they dont ID and happily deliver to my teenagers as long as there are no restricted items
Depends on the area/ driver really our tesco drivers will usually ask for id if they are not sure as once a driver allowed a 16 year old to take the delivery (he knew 100% there were no age restricted products in the shopping) and he almost lost his job because of it, so since then the majority of our drivers are more careful
Hamm87 · 05/10/2020 20:23

Wow did you really have to be a cow to the op, they should not need id if just for food stuff I would kick off on twitter too and ring them on behalf of your sister to put in a formal complaint

Meuniere · 05/10/2020 20:23

I’m no sure why you are so arsey @Okokokitsout.
I wouldn’t have expected to need an Id either. And I’m pretty certain 95% of people don’t read the terms & conditions.

Trying to put people down isn’t nice tbh.

Besides, many people don’t have an id, incl young people (see the uproar re Id for voting). There is an issue there. Esp if someone clearly looks older than 25yo and there is no alcohol etc...

Gatekeeper · 05/10/2020 20:28

Bloody hell okokok...that was uncalled for...the only hostility I can see is in spades in your post

Rosebel · 05/10/2020 20:29

I work in a supermarket (not Watroise) and they will not deliver home shopping unless someone over 25 is there.
The drivers don't know what is in each person's shopping so they have a blanket rule of over 25s only to accept the shopping. The driver is allowed to ask for ID if in doubt. Imagine the trouble he'd be in if he let someone underage accept the shopping.
It's a pain for your sister but where I work it says on the website over 25s only and ID may be required.

Coffeecak3 · 05/10/2020 20:30

The UK has gone mad.

malmi · 05/10/2020 20:34

No supermarkets require you to be 25 to receive a shopping order.

That is bonkers what about all those isolating students at universities who might need food deliveries,? The op's sister is disabled and has been left without food. She has grey hair for goodness sake.

The world really has gone mad and not because of Covid either !!!

User3405678 · 05/10/2020 20:47

@Rosebel
Are you sure it's over 25 rather than challenge 25? Because having to be 25 to get a food delivery sounds absurd!

bethany39 · 05/10/2020 20:48

The Ts and Cs of most (all?) online supermarkets say you have to have someone 18 or over to receive the delivery.

They asked for ID because in the driver's judgement she looked under 25 (the standard age they ID to check you're over 18).

She couldn't provide anything to prove she's over 18, so they couldn't deliver the shopping.

I don't really see what there is to kick off about to be honest?

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 05/10/2020 20:49

My children have regularly taken my Ocado order in. The order details tell the driver if there are any age restricted products in which case I make sure I am at home.

It is ridiculous to say you have to be over 18 to have groceries delivered! You can buy groceries in a shop under 18.

I’m lucky I’ve never been asked for ID as I don’t have photo ID to hand. Passport is in a very safe place - not quickly accessible and driving licence is paper one.

slipperywhensparticus · 05/10/2020 20:51

but you can buy food in a shop under 18 i don't see why you need to prove your age for vegetables

mouse70 · 05/10/2020 20:52

Over 25 only able to accept home delivery. Words fail me. The world has gone mad!!!! How many people under 25 live alone so by having this restriction they can not get home deliveries?

Lockheart · 05/10/2020 20:53

You have to be 18 or over to collect and sign for a delivery from all major UK supermarkets, and indeed for lots of other deliveries in the UK (the fact that this is not always adhered to does not render it legal).

All services will operate a challenge 25 policy. Therefore if you look under 25 you'll be asked for ID. They cannot leave a delivery with you without ID if they have asked.

This will be in the T&Cs, which you agree to when you place an order - regardless of whether you have read them or not!

It's bad luck for your sister, but the delivery driver and Waitrose have done absolutely nothing wrong.

It's not 25 and over, it's 18 and over. If you look under 25, you'll be asked for ID.
GrandTheftWalrus · 05/10/2020 20:57

I moved out at 21. I'd have had to wait for 4 years to get shopping delivered if you weren't allowed it under 25!

You are allowed it under 25, you'd just have been asked for ID.
GrandTheftWalrus · 05/10/2020 20:59

I didn't have id then so I'd have been screwed getting my veggies lol
