To expect Waitrose to deliver veg without proof of age?

So Waitrose have just refused to deliver to my disabled 31 year old sister because she couldn't provide ID showing she was over 25.

There was no alcohol in her order, just veg and the like. The guy just took the shopping back from her doorstep and disappeared.

AIBU to think that she should be able to receive her (alcohol free) shopping without proving she's old enough to buy alcohol?

@Brefugee

well, agreed the government couldn't run a piss up in a brewery / find their arses with both hands and a map.
Exactly - no fucking way would I trust them to be in charge of my identity.
PattyPan · 06/10/2020 10:35

Clearly the driver was unreasonable given your sister was clearly over 18/25.
The fact that you have to be 18 even if not buying age restricted items is itself ridiculous anyway IMO - at 16 you can be married with a child but you can’t get the child’s nappies delivered? Hmm
I was once ID’d by Sainsbury’s for a delivery, the driver claimed it was because I had bought matches. Matches aren’t even age restricted! Then he was funny about accepting it because I had literally just moved to that place so the address on my driving licence was wrong.

Tarantallegra · 06/10/2020 10:50

The combination of people having to isolate at the moment forcing home deliveries and the fact she has grey hair makes this ridiculous policy or not. I do realise it's possible for under 18s to go grey early but not very likely and surely worth risking if there aren't any age restricted products.

@Zaphodsotherhead The worst one is things like energy drinks, where you have to be over 16 to purchase no 16 year old needs to buy an energy drink they should be 18 plus anyway.

CaffiSaliMali · 06/10/2020 11:32

I am the same age as OP's sister and have done all my grocery shopping online since lockdown. I haven't been asked for ID at all including when purchasing alcohol.

I don't know anyone in their early 30s who would pass for 24 or younger.

I would contact Waitrose OP. Maybe they can flag that your DSis has additional needs on her account so that they know her age and don't have to ask?

I can't drive for medical reasons and so my passport is my only ID. However passports aren't cheap and not everyone will have an accepted photo ID they can show. I wouldn't expect to need ID after the age of 30!

@AldiAisleofCrap

It's over 16 for energy drinks in the UK.

And there are a LOT of 16 year olds who buy energy drinks. Whether they need to or not is not my problem. I just have to ID them.

woofwoof1880 · 06/10/2020 12:06

I've been using Waitrose for deliveries for over 10 years and I've never been asked for any ID. Even when there has been alcohol in the order.

I did once buy a dessert from M&S that had alcohol in it (it mush have been something like a tiramisu) and that flagged up with an ID check at the till.

It could be something like that in the order that meant the driver had to ask for ID. My understanding is once they ask, if you don't show it then they can't give you the order.

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 06/10/2020 12:32

Ive never been asked for ID and have been shopping online since way before 25!

Its ridicuous, 17 year olds cant buy vegetables online?

And even if the policy is over 18s only I dont see why they need to enforce the challenge 25 policy, its not like its against the law to seel to 18 yr olds so if they accidnetally give shopping to a 17 yr old its really not the end of the world

@Zaphodsotherhead yes I know it’s over 16’s unsure why you posted the link. I said that in my option it should be 18 so not having relevant ID as a 16 year is irrelevant.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 07/10/2020 14:39

I have now received an email from Ocado confirming that they have no age limit on receiving a delivery from them so long as there are no age restricted items. Even then they would just remove those items and deliver the rest of the shopping. You do have to be over eighteen to actually have an account and place the order but no issue with my teenaged son receiving a delivery while I am at work!

@StealthPolarBear

If a 17 year old is living alone and self isolating what are they meant to do?
This was what I wondered, I left home at 16 so I'd have starved (not that I had Waitrose money back then, I barely had Tesco money)
