Break the law, admit it in court, go to prison. Simple. Not sure what the sad faces and holding the photo is all about.

@AndNowItsHappeningInMine

What's good for the goose, IMO

The government flout their own rules at every turn, and suffer absolutely no consequences.

So how have their government flouted any rules? Do you have examples?
unmarkedbythat · 05/10/2020 18:04

I'm not sure I support a prison sentence but OP, yanbu, those are some quality sad faces and if you go to another country during a pandemic, surely the onus is on you to find out what you can and can't do before you do it?

powershowerforanhour · 05/10/2020 18:55

don't understand what went through their heads. They were being put up in a hotel with everything laid on, and being paid plenty for a few days' work on condition that they didn't go wandering about in between. It's explained to them quite clearly that this is important and will be strictly enforced. So pretty much the first thing they decide to do on stepping foot in thisother countryis exactly the one thing they were told they mustn't do.

It's like Father Dougal and the big red button on the plane.

Balla · 05/10/2020 20:07

@Everywherethatmarywent

These people getting sent to prison for going shopping in Tesco.

And people think it’s funny and just.

What the fuck has happened to society?

Well the Manx society has normality back, we locked down hard, we stuck to the rules, life now is the same as it was pre Covid. Does your society have that ? Nope.. because there are no consequences to breaking the rules. Look where that's got you. I was at a concert last week, few hundred up dancing. A Food & Drink festival attended by 16,000 over a wk end. Can see all my family and friends inside any venue or home. Looking forward to a big family Christmas all together. Our grandparents aren't scared to go out, our kids are being schooled & attending normal activities. Carry on with your outrage at these twats being jailed. They signed their exemption certificate stating they would abide by the law. They CHOSE to ignore it, they pay the price. Tough ! But you carry on being outraged, us Manxies are proud of where we've got to. Locals who break the Covid Laws get prison sentences too, it's no different

So tired of these little islanders posting on here with glee. Similar to Bournemouth, was there on the last warm day of September and local residents were miserable!

Didums, were the nasty people of Bournemouth not in a holiday mood when it suited you? How tiresome for you.

Wonder if it might be the months of hellish traffic, fights, mountains of litter, human excrement...

eaglejulesk · 05/10/2020 20:33

Well said @Balla.

Iamthewombat · 05/10/2020 22:03

I don’t have a dog in this fight, being neither Manx, nor a Bournemouth resident, nor a relation of Doncaster-based welders, but don’t you think that’s a little patronising?

Is this you ‘storming’ and ‘blasting the decision’ like the wife and mother of one of the welders?

Downwithcovid · 05/10/2020 22:43

I can assure you the residents of the Isle of Man are not miserable at the moment.

Together with guernsey I guess we are amongst the happiest in Britain.

My kids are at school with no masks and no social distancing. We are working as normal. Last week I went to Last Night of the Proms in a local theatre with 1500 other people with no social distancing. The weekend before that we went to W FPS festival that was attended by 16,000.

We go where we want when we want and see who we want when we want.

We are under no illusion that this is possible because we are an island and that’s why it is so important that people coming here follow the rules or face the punishment. The same punishment (actually softer) that is applied to locals who don’t help keep us safe.

Downwithcovid So you are part of Britain but not UK?

SoupDragon · 05/10/2020 23:13

Nope.. because there are no consequences to breaking the rules

I imagine the fact that we aren't a tiny island with a tiny population has something to do with it too.

MoonJelly · 06/10/2020 00:07

@Cadent, how many posts from "little islanders", with or without glee, do you actually see on MN that you have become "so tired" of them? Could you by any chance be wildly exaggerating?

nettie434 · 06/10/2020 00:14

@Treesofwood

Downwithcovid So you are part of Britain but not UK?
The Isle of Man and the Channel Islands are Crown Dependencies and have been so for hundreds of years. Technically they are not sovereign states (I feel like Richard Osman on Pointless here) but in practice the UK government does not interfere in their right to make their own laws locally.

I have to say that on the day when we have been told that levels of coronavirus in Manchester are even worse than before the local lockdown, the approaches taken in the Isle of Man and Guernsey seem very logical, allowing for the fact that it is easier to enforce them on small islands.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 06/10/2020 00:28

I imagine the fact that we aren't a tiny island with a tiny population has something to do with it too.

Yup I think that's probably more likely, not because we're not sending people to prison for 2 weeks for going to tesco.

Imfromhere · 06/10/2020 00:44

@Balla well said!

We as a community followed the rules and came out the other side. It was really bloody hard in lockdown but we all knew what the reward was at the other side. More than worth 3 months of hell.

honeygirlz · 06/10/2020 00:49

What’s with all the smug bragging? The UK has had 13k COVID cases on Saturday and 41 deaths in the past week. This thread is in very poor taste.

So happy for the people of the Isle of Man that they can go to Proms... not. Hmm

Imfromhere · 06/10/2020 00:57

It's not smug. It's that 99% of the population sacrificing for the greater good. No trying to find ways around the regulations. Just following the rules.

honeygirlz · 06/10/2020 01:06

Of course it’s bragging, ‘check out all these festivals and proms we’re attending’.

And the UK has made sacrifices too. On a population level much more than the Isle of Man, so the patronising ‘we sacrificed for the greater good’ is nauseating.

Balla · 06/10/2020 01:34

Bragging ?!?!? Jeez I've heard it all now.. you think it's a picnic living here being totally closed off from the rest of UK & beyond. So what if we are pleased we can do things here now.
I haven't seen my fiancé since March as he doesn't live on the island. I should have been married by now. We have been told by our government that borders are unlikely to open before spring. That's a year.. a whole fucking year of being closed off. You think that all residents have their families/friends here ? No, a huge amount of our 85000 population have relatives in UK & overseas. Imagine being a year without seeing them at all. Our students are going off to university totally alone, babies born, people dying. Can't support or comfort our families in person. In UK you've had a whole summer of doing as you please, off on your holidays, having family gatherings etc. Your government is inept, it flaunts it's own rules, never mind a significant amount of your population won't follow them either.
We've paid a very high price for the freedom we now have..
And to have that jeopardised by those 5 selfish idiots who not only are well aware of the laws here BEFORE they even leave UK. They signed a five page document detailing this. They get accommodation paid, 3 meals a day in the hotel, it serves alcohol and the hotel staff will order takeaways and anything else you would need. They get paid £££ premium rates. But they can't do the simple thing of following what they were told. And to cap it all one of them has tested Covid Positive which sent the whole prison into lockdown over week end. Not to mention the worry for the families of the staff. It's now just visiting that's been suspended in the prison as our testing and Track and Trace system works well.
The Manx public follow the rules, we don't take the piss, we worked our arses off to get where we are. We look after each other, we do it for the greater good. Thank Christ neither of the last two posters live here with that attitude.Smug we ain't, but we are invested in our community.
What's happened to your arts & entertainment industry ?? It's fucked. We are supporting local businesses stay afloat by attending these events. Try educate yourself on the subjects you appear to have such a condescending opinion about

Balla · 06/10/2020 01:54

The Isle of Man has the oldest continuous parliament in the world, since 979AD, think we've earned our right to make our own damn rules

jessstan1 · 06/10/2020 04:27

Miserable place with archaic laws. Merseyside accents and poor weather.

eaglejulesk · 06/10/2020 05:54

Once again, well said @Balla

Biker47 · 06/10/2020 06:53

So how do residents who return and have to self isolate, purchase groceries etc? Tried to find information on that but couldn't see any.

Iamthewombat · 06/10/2020 07:15

Miserable place with archaic laws. Merseyside accents and poor weather.

Let’s hear your opinion of Merseyside.

OfTheNight · 06/10/2020 07:24

They broke the law. I don’t really see how people can’t understand that?

I’ve lost count of the number of threads I’ve seen on Mumsnet, where someone has broken a rule and they subsequently get figuratively crucified. Examples include parents complaining about DC and uniform rules - “well you knew the rules when you sent them to that school” and recently a lady wanting to walk her dog on a beach “well you are breaking the rules and putting others at risk, you are being selfish.” Etc.

These men took the opportunity to work on the IOM. The law was clearly explained to them and they had to sign a declaration to say they would comply. They were accommodated in a hotel purposely set up for their needs and provided with food and drink. They were only going for 2 days. They chose to to break the law to get beer.

So these blokes breaking the law and risking reintroducing Covid to a community who are completely Covid free are ok, but the lady wanting to walk her dog 2 miles outside her local restricted area was a selfish bitch? It doesn’t make sense to me.

Good on the IOM, they’ve put the welfare of their citizens first.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 06/10/2020 07:26

So happy for the people of the Isle of Man that they can go to Proms... not. Oooh! The Jealousy is alive and well in this one!

Miserable place with archaic laws. Merseyside accents and poor weather. Come on then soft lad, let's hear it!
