To want a warm pud every night?

It's cold, and miserable and I'm craving custard and a sweet-sweet stodgy dessert after every evening meal.

Please tell me I'm not the only one? Has anyone found a healthy-ish alternative that'd hit the spot, before I turn into a pudding.

Not the only one 🙋🏼‍♀️

I have no alternative... tbh I like to pretend I don’t really eat dessert so I’m never overly prepared and am never satisfied with what I end up with. I need to just commit and keep an apple crumble read to go at all times.

CakeRequired · 04/10/2020 13:02

Not the only one. My diet though would be screwed if I actually did that.

NW2SW · 04/10/2020 13:03

Emergency apple crumble makes SO much sense.

I get you! Had to cook a frozen strudel last night.

I make a quick crumble of fresh chopped apples/pears, mix muesli with a bit of flour and melted butter and pile on top, then bake.

Iola4 · 04/10/2020 13:04

For me it's stews, I crave savoury food in winter and sweet when it's warmer. Have a stew going now in the slow cooker.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 04/10/2020 13:05

Oh just do it. Life is shit at the minute. If a warm jam roly poly and custard cheers you then just have it.

AnneLovesGilbert · 04/10/2020 13:06

I was thinking exactly this earlier and I don’t usually like them. Must be the weather, it feels like it hasn’t let up for days.

Around this time I usually make an amazing triple ginger cake which can be served warm with custard or cold with tea.

Just had a huge cooked breakfast for lunch so the craving has gone but you’re not the only one!

FizzyPink · 04/10/2020 13:08

Oh same! I’d never normally eat pudding (much more of a two starters person) but the last week or so I’ve been really fancying some warm crumble after dinner

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 04/10/2020 13:09

Thankfully we didn't grow up eating puddings every day so it's not the norm here, I would most definitely be one if we had but I have a bit of a Wotsits problem, I always want a packet (or several) of those every day. I ^^ not to buy them.

NW2SW · 04/10/2020 13:09

Well this thread is backfiring massively, it's an enabler! Jam roly poly, strudel... ginger cake! want it all Blush

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 04/10/2020 13:09

I try not to buy them, that should have been.

CodenameVillanelle · 04/10/2020 13:11

What about stewed fruit with natural Yoghurt?

Care to share your triple ginger cake recipe, it sounds delicious.

We make up a healthy crumble recipe (wholegrain flours and nuts and minimum sugar, sometimes none) and then bake the crumble bit sprinkled over a baking tray - so you end up with the crispy baked crumbs. They can then freeze and stay seperated so it's easy to take out just what you need.

This is important because it means for a pudding you can:

  • stew up some fruit with a healthy sweetener, such as Yacon syrup (literally the best thing I have ever come across)
  • take out just a few spoonfuls of the crumble mix and sprinkle on top of fruit
  • add a dollop of thick and creamy greek yoghurt

It's a warm pudding but one that is mainly fruit and yoghurt. Mmmm

MrsCrosbyNRTB · 04/10/2020 13:17

@AnneLovesGilbert I NEED that ginger recipe please. That sounds amazing.

We all like hot stewed fruit (no added sugar unless it’s rhubarb) with cinnamon, ginger and a spoonful of mascarpone. I sprinkle pan toasted oats and seeds on top. The mascarpone gives it that indulgent feel but as it’s so rich you only need a little bit.

MrsCrosbyNRTB · 04/10/2020 13:19

Another one we do is baked rice pudding with tinned peaches in juice. Minimal sugar again but sooooo lovely

OneFiveFour · 04/10/2020 13:19

We also sometimes make brownies with almond flour and yacon and very dark choc. Cut into smallish squares for around 200kcal a square. Freeze then defrost and heat back up when needed, in a warm oven - e.g. pop in the the hot-but-off oven after dinner comes out.

Yoghurt, berries, sometimes frozen yoghurt, occasionally Ben & Jerry Moophoria range all make light (ish) toppings. It's still 300kcals total but then are 300kcals with plenty of good stuff in them.

Ginger cake recipe

If I’m serving it warm I skip the icing.

QueenOllie · 04/10/2020 13:24

I've been having stewed Apple with cinnamon, sultanas and custard and it's hitting the spot
Rice pudding too

CodenameVillanelle · 04/10/2020 13:27

What?! I love stewed fruit and yoghurt Grin sure it's not a crumble with custard but it hits a spot and isn't a million calories!

Cocklepops · 04/10/2020 13:30

@ReeseWitherfork I’m having to pop to the Co-op now to get apple crumble ingredients. I blame you entirely (aka thank you and you’re my new favourite person) 🤣

Dillo10 · 04/10/2020 13:32

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz oh warm jam Roly poly is the BEST

Glitterbubbles · 04/10/2020 13:36

You've inspired me to get some stewed apple out of the freezer for a crumble tonight!

TabithaTadpole · 04/10/2020 13:37

I’m on a diet and should not have opened this thread. I thought it was going to be lots of posters telling you to get a grip and have an apple.
Now I’m craving jam roll poly 🤤
