Instant or ‘snobby’ coffee???

I have over the years become a bit of a coffee snob. Yes I will admit it. I used to drink instant. Was introduced to filter coffee and thought it was heaven!! Then years later used a friends nespresso machine and have never looked back. So, are you a coffee snob or is it just a hot drink???
Yabu. It’s just a drink
Yanbu. No instant for me!

I can’t drink instant, it’s horrible.

Had a Nespresso for years but gave it up due to the environmental impact

Now I just use my french press with decent coffee, it’s lovely.

Considering splashing out on a decent bean to cup machine.

ummnamechange · 25/09/2020 11:58

i mean really. I grow my own beans in a remotely controlled estate in the montagnard region near quanh tring of Vietnan. i ethically force feed them to civet cats, then, my artisan collectors vacuum up the vomit, gently roast and airfreight the beans to my house where my butler grinds them on demand.

Anything else may as well be mellow birds

smoothieooo · 25/09/2020 11:58

Bosch tassimo user here. I have 2 coffees every single day of my life from the machine and make 'uuummm' noises each time (and I've had it for 10 years)! So whilst it's at the lower end of the 'real' coffee machines, it's made me really not like instant.

Doje · 25/09/2020 12:00

Snob, definitely.

I won't drink instant. When I go to someone else's house I have to do that awful "ummm... do you have 'proper' coffee"? If they don't I'll have tea instead.

I only have plunger coffee, with supermarket brand coffee, so not a proper snob!

unmarkedbythat · 25/09/2020 12:00

I have some snobby coffee for special occasions but day to day, instant.

Pobblebonk · 25/09/2020 12:01

I only have instant if it has a slug of rum or brandy in Blush

Leimarel · 25/09/2020 12:03

My mum bought me a fabulous barista coffee machine for my landmark birthday this year and I love it. I'm not a fan of instant coffee at all, although I would drink it if there was nothing else on offer. I grew up in Italy where instant coffee wasn't available, so have always had a stove top percolator for my morning espresso.

I don't think it's snobby to enjoy a decent cup of coffee.

Sgtmajormummy · 25/09/2020 12:05

I’ve had this machine for years. It’s well seasoned with the ground coffee brand we always use. It has a 1cup, 2 cup and a “Coffee cushion” filter instead of pods.

IIRC it was about €100.

😁😁

You know it’s not ‘harvested’ from vomit though, right??

Sgtmajormummy · 25/09/2020 12:08

That was @Ideasplease322

I agree that there’s instant, and there’s instant. I have found Alta Rica very good, though still prefer the cafetière.

I’m not snobby about instant when offered at someone’s house HOWEVER it’s usually the sort of person who puts a scant level teaspoon in - so I have to ask them to add another teaspoon. Heaped!

This is maddening isn't it... people making coffee with about half a teaspoon of instant powder and a shit ton of sugar and milk.

This isn't coffee!

cctvrec · 25/09/2020 12:11

As much as I lused to love my filter coffees I can't get enough of Nescafé Azera Intenso instant. Amazing flavour and no faffing at all.

When I find it on offer I'll scoop the shelf into a basket!

Anordinarymum · 25/09/2020 12:11

Coffee is a massive subject isn't it !

Here's my own 'take' on COFFEE

Years ago when it started becoming popular we bought 'Birds' and we made it with hot milk and loved it. It was a treat for my sister and I.

Now we look back and smile. I wouldn't drink it now but back then it was a nice thing to do and we always used to say 'it's like a meal' :) :)

I am not a coffee snob but I know what I like and I have done the rounds.

I dislike Starbucks coffee. I find it bitter and Costa is not much better either. I enjoy Macdonald's cappuccino and I enjoy the coffee you can buy in garages in those machines.

At home I have a Gaggia machine. I have had it for years. It is big and cumbersome but every so often I get it out and use it for a while. the coffees are nice, and I love using the frother. I feel like a barrista :)

I also have a cafetierre and I use that daily with Lavazzo or Illy and I pour single cream on it.

It is not a question of snobbery, it's almost a hobby for some as there are so many aspects to drinking it.

I prefer tea always but the deliciousness of a good cup of coffee is very inviting isn't it :)

Vivana · 25/09/2020 12:12

I cannot stand coffee but give me a good hot chocolate any day

LakieLady · 25/09/2020 12:17

My mum likes instant, but doesn’t like filter

I'm not keen on filter or cafetiere coffee, but I love moka or bean-to-cup coffee. I wonder if it might be the fresh ground taste I like though?
I think I've only had cafetiere or filter coffee when it's been ready-ground.

I don't know why more people don't grind their own, tbh. I have a dinky little electric grinder, it only takes a few seconds and it really does make a difference to the taste.

I've never had Nespresso coffee, but I wouldn't buy a machine even if I liked it. So wasteful and ennvironmentally damaging, and I'm still resistant to buying Nestle products after boycotting them for years because of their damaging profiteering in the the third world.

PontiacBandit · 25/09/2020 12:17

They are 2 completely drinks imo. I've grown to love freshly ground coffee and dislike instant coffee though.

Nsky · 25/09/2020 12:20

Love my nespresso, filter st work, instant at friends , which is ok, bit of an expense.
Don’t drink /smoke/ gamble, only hair colour st hairdressers and coffee

LaurieFairyCake · 25/09/2020 12:22

I've gone mental snobby in last 2 weeks - now have madly expensive bean to cup machine and have the best coffee beans in the world (Jamaican Blue Mountain at £2 a cup)

I reckon I may have reached snob pinnacle

TheDaydreamBelievers · 25/09/2020 12:23

Serious snob. Have a bean to cup system - grinder and a machine with a milk wand Grin

AmazingBouncingFerret · 25/09/2020 12:24

I have a built in espresso machine with milk steaming wand but the only milky coffee I’ll drink is a nice oat milk flat white! 😂
It does a splendid Americano though so that kept me going through lockdown.

My son prefers those cappuccino sachets made by Nescafé!

LavenderSatin · 25/09/2020 12:25

I’m a coffee snob and one stage further, because I have a bean to cup machine Grin it bears no comparison imo, it is so much more delicious.

I’ve actually completely gone off coffee due to being pregnant, and I miss it so much! Can’t wait to get back to it once the baby is born.

MyPersona · 25/09/2020 12:26

I don’t think of instant coffee as an alternative to coffee, and I don’t drink it at all although I love coffee. I wouldn’t dream of using an Nespresso machine though, there are so many better and less environmentally damaging options for making a decent cup.

Luckingfovely · 25/09/2020 12:28

Hands up to also being a coffee 'snob' and my coffee machine is one of my favourite things in the house. It would be replaced within a day if anything happened to it! And I wouldn't drink instant coffee under any circs - would rather just have something else.

CheetasOnFajitas · 25/09/2020 12:28

I keep trying various instants hoping they will taste good as I am lazy and find filter a faff. But there is something about them, a sort of bitter chemical taste that makes them recognisable as instant at 100 paces. If anyone can vouch for any really good ones I’d be glad to hear!
