Instant or ‘snobby’ coffee???

I have over the years become a bit of a coffee snob. Yes I will admit it. I used to drink instant. Was introduced to filter coffee and thought it was heaven!! Then years later used a friends nespresso machine and have never looked back. So, are you a coffee snob or is it just a hot drink???
Yabu. It’s just a drink
Yanbu. No instant for me!

We have both at home. I do prefer using my cafetiere with ground coffee but will have instant if short on time.

I wouldn't class Nespresso as good/fresh/'snobby' coffee though, it's one tiny step above instant. 😂

TeddyIsaHe · 25/09/2020 11:20

I love Nescafé instant espresso. It even has a crema! I have fooled quite a few of my friends who think it’s poncy stuff.

I do like a Nespresso coffee but it’s just so pricey. I drink 2 cups a day, and each cup has 2/3 pods in it (I like vvvv strong coffee!) so it works out to nearly 100 capsules a month Confused

SVRT19674 · 25/09/2020 11:21

I have instant for breakfast and italian cafetiere coffee after lunch. Love it. I did the Nespresso thing some years ago, but no coffee is as good as the old fashioned espresso. Sorry.

haba · 25/09/2020 11:21

@thepeopleversuswork I see it the other way round- tea has lots of arcane rituals, and beautiful porcelain so it's refined and naice. Coffee is drunk by Americans, and is ubiquitous, so it's more downmarket.
Not that I actually give a damn what people drink Grin

TheHoneyFactory · 25/09/2020 11:22

i love coffee but im honestly not bothered - ill drink any...instant or fancy. i do have a rule that i dont do takeaway coffee - if i pay for it im sitting in cafe and enjoying the experience. (exception being park catch up with friend ) but no coffee on the go (i live in the boonies so any reason to linger)

CSIblonde · 25/09/2020 11:23

I'll happily drink either. I had free ground 'proper' coffee in most jobs, but don't really hanker for it at home. Gold Blend is fine .

SallySeven · 25/09/2020 11:23

I agree about no takeaway!

I like the seat to go with the drink.

CatBatCat · 25/09/2020 11:24

I'll drink any kind of coffee I'm not fussed. Now tea I'm rather particular about and must be whole loose leaf.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 25/09/2020 11:26

haba - but coffee houses in England go back to the 1600s and involve their own rituals. Similar rituals can be found today - look at some of the lovely professional espresso machines in indy coffee shops. We used to own a beautiful silver and glass stovetop coffee pot (when I was very small) that I think had its origins in the 1920s. My mother threw it away because it was 'fiddly'. :(

CorianderLord · 25/09/2020 11:26

I have a proper coffee machine (that grinds the coffee etc) and it's gorgeous. I love it.

But, I'll drink instant if I have to.

TreestumpsAndTrampolines · 25/09/2020 11:26

We have a bean to cup machine, which DP prefers, and I don't mind. I can't stand Nespresso etc. I find I can taste the paper

If I go to make myself a cup though, then it's instant. And not just instant, I like it with CoffeeMate! So it's more than possible my tastes aren't to be listened to at all.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 25/09/2020 11:27

Nespresso isnt great coffee! You can much better quality buying loose beans or good quality ground from a proper coffee merchant.

longwayoff · 25/09/2020 11:27

Either but no milk. Ever. In any form. Milk belongs to cows.

thepeopleversuswork · 25/09/2020 11:27

haba

That's true... but there's definitely a "I'm working class so I drink tea none of this poncey cappucino nonsense" thing as well...

Bizarre. People are quite happy for it to be known that they've blown £60k on a top of the range car, but not that they've bought an upmarket ground coffee.

Newfornow · 25/09/2020 11:29

Bean to cup every time or nothing. If that’s snobby I am ok with it.

Doliv63 · 25/09/2020 11:29

Good quality instant coffee for me ....cannot be bothered with all the faffing around with other coffee.

BrazenlyDefying · 25/09/2020 11:31

I drink both. DH is devoted to his Nespresso but it's a faff, expensive and even though the wee capsules can be recycled, so wasteful.

lottiegarbanzo · 25/09/2020 11:32

I also hate the word snobby. Snobby and posh are terms used to keep people down, 'in their place' - usually the very same people using those terms.

You're talking about good, bad and instant coffee.

I'd never buy Nespresso or Nescafe, as I've boycotted Nestle for a lifetime, because of their unethical promotion of formula milk in developing countries. More info on that here for anyone interested.

Nespresso and other coffee pods are an environmental disaster too. That's pretty well known, surely?

To answer your question(!) Yes, I chose to drink good coffee and enjoy the taste and the buzz. It is not 'just a drink'.

Hokeywokey · 25/09/2020 11:33

I'm not fussed. Love a good espresso but can drink instant or use coffee bags.

Thelnebriati · 25/09/2020 11:33

We use Lidl ground coffee and a cafetiere. We've been experimenting with cold extraction, but my favourite coffee is too finely ground.

Flavabobble · 25/09/2020 11:33

I have a cafetiere, stove-top, aeropress, coffee grinder and milk foamer/heater jug. More than one 'real' coffee in a day makes me twitchy as hell, so I'll still sometimes just want an instant.

ScrambledSmegs · 25/09/2020 11:34

I like good coffee. I don't see why that's 'snobby'? I have a moka pot and a pour over jug, both of which get a lot of use. I'd love a bean to cup machine but don't have the space.

There's still a place for instant - for example in the the Greek frappé, which was a staple drink in an office I used to work at in summertime. Which apparently has to be cheap and cheerful Nescafe. Some of the new instant espressos are ok too.

Quick question - I've never understood why some of the old instant coffees had a weird aftertaste of Bovril? Were there chemicals or additives in the manufacturing that made them a bit...beefy?

52andblue · 25/09/2020 11:34

I prefer to grind the beans if poss and use a french press at home.
Aldi have some decent single origin ground coffee for the price (>£2/pk)

Most coffee to go is poor imo. McDonald's is probably the nicest :0
I prefer leaf tea and a proper pot.
Don't like slurping 'to go' like an adult with a sippy cup.
I'd rather sit and savour the experience :)

My parents would describe anything other than Nescafe as snobby.
They are 75. I remember them drinking 'Camp' coffee from a bottle!

Devlesko · 25/09/2020 11:35

I'm instant, dh likes proper coffee.
I can't drink it as it gives me the runs.
Well, you did ask. Grin

MidnightCitrus · 25/09/2020 11:36

I dont like 'real' coffee, I like instant.

I dont like the idea of pod coffees (not used them) as they seem to generate a lot of waste.
DH has an aeropress that he loves...
