Instant or ‘snobby’ coffee???

I have over the years become a bit of a coffee snob. Yes I will admit it. I used to drink instant. Was introduced to filter coffee and thought it was heaven!! Then years later used a friends nespresso machine and have never looked back. So, are you a coffee snob or is it just a hot drink???
Yabu. It’s just a drink
Yanbu. No instant for me!

Was a grind it myself snob until I went decaff for medical reasons.

Now as its not particularly good coffee either way I just buy instant.

Nquartz · 25/09/2020 11:38

The ILs have a coffee machine, I think it's Nespresso and I do like one of the coffees they make but i'm not that enamored that I'll spend loads on the machine and then loads on the pods.

I do like having a drip coffee machine when we go on holiday to USA and Canada though, and I'd consider one for the house but I like to keep stuff on the worktops to a minimum.

caringcarer · 25/09/2020 11:39

My dh is a coffee drinker and used to use the cafeteria. Four years ago I bought him a bean to cup machine for his birthday and he uses it all the time. I also make an occasional latte with vanilla coffee beans. Expensive machine but worth it. If it broke I would replace it. I drink decade tea mostly. The only place I drink instant coffee is at hairdressers and I have not been for ages.

DominaShantotto · 25/09/2020 11:39

Bean to cup machine here with whatever beans are on special in the supermarket. Cappuccino because I like them and I don't care what people think. Only bought it at the start of lockdown because I didn't ever want to be locked in again with crap coffee.

Nquartz · 25/09/2020 11:39

I dont like the idea of pod coffees (not used them) as they seem to generate a lot of waste.

This too. My ILs don't even recycle theirs Angry

evilharpy · 25/09/2020 11:40

I'm not a snob at all but I hate instant coffee. It runs straight through me and tastes weird.

I use a V60 most of the time these days but also an aeropress and occasionally a moka pot if I'm making coffee for multiple people, and always bring an aeropress on holiday.

I buy bags of coffee ready-ground but would like to start grinding my own.

Kind of wish I liked instant as I seem to always get offered it when visiting someone else's house but always opt for tea instead!

Cineraria · 25/09/2020 11:42

Not instant. We have some instant for flavouring cakes but none for drinking.

We usually use a bean to cup machine and specific beans that each of us like from a company that roast to order but right now our machine is broken, so I'm using a stovetop espresso machine and he is using a Staresso machine and ready ground beans. Does that put us in the coffee snobs category? To me, DB and SiL seem much more into really good coffee than us. They go on courses at their local shop to learn all about the different equipment, processes and beans. They do make wonderful coffee, though!

polkadotx · 25/09/2020 11:44

I'm a coffee snob.

I have a barista pro sage machine.
I get my beans posted to me every two weeks.

No instant in my house at all.

SpecialWGM · 25/09/2020 11:45

Throws cat amongst the pigeons

What about...Dolce Gusto...

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 25/09/2020 11:45

My husband is a coffee snob and I bought him a huge barista coffee machine for his last big birthday. He despairs that I still prefer instant.

powkin · 25/09/2020 11:46

As an even bigger coffee snob, I am turning my nose up at Nespresso.

I hand grind my beans that I get from my local independent. I hate myself for writing that sentence.

HOWEVER, I actually like M&S Gold decaf instant. I don't see it as coffee, more of a brown drink, and good for when feeling lazy.

Marylou2 · 25/09/2020 11:46

Bit of both here. Have a bean to cup, nespresso, chemex and cafetière at home but if anyone else is willing to make me an instant coffee and have a gossip I'm super happy too.

ravenmum · 25/09/2020 11:46

I live in Germany. The way it is usually seen here is:

Instant coffee - not coffee, why would anyone ever drink that unless e.g. camping?
Nespresso - a bit of a fad, not green, but tastes better than instant
Filter coffee / moka pot - normal coffee
Big, expensive machine for coffee and espresso, like in a café but smaller - nice coffee

LakieLady · 25/09/2020 11:48

Snobby coffee for me, although I'm mostly a tea drinker.

DP only drinks coffee, but will drink any old instant muck. When I have a coffee, it's freshly ground beans brewed double strength in a Bialetti pot, with a dash of hot, but not boiled, milk.

I wish DP was a coffee snob, because then I could justify the expense of a fab barista type machine. For the 2 or 3 cups a week I drink, it's not worth it.

lynsey91 · 25/09/2020 11:49

I really dislike instant coffee. I have tried loads of them and they just do not taste like proper coffee. A bit like instant mash does not taste like proper mashed potato.

We have a cafeteria and a stove pot

louderthan1 · 25/09/2020 11:49

I'm a coffee snob in that I like coffee to taste, smell and look like coffee rather than dishwater. A friend gave me their bean to cup machine and it's the best thing ever but a cafetière or aero press can be just as good. If you like coffee you won't ever drink instant.

Frannibananni · 25/09/2020 11:50

I won’t drink instant or milky cappuccino etc. I prefer to drink water if that’s all that’s on offer. I Do love a nice strong cafetière coffee with a small dash of milk. I can drink that all day long.

ApolloandDaphne · 25/09/2020 11:50

I drink any coffee. I have a filter coffee machine, a Nespresso machine and instant coffee. I like it all in different situations. Big cup of instant after my morning dog walk, lungo cup of Nespresso as a quick sharp caffeine intake, pot of filter at the weekend over breakfast with DH. All good for me. Just don't give me decaffeinated!

haba · 25/09/2020 11:51

@Devlesko that's actually quite a common problem, and my DD is the same. She loves the taste of coffee, but when it comes out as quickly as it went in, it's not a fun experience. Thanks for you in lieu of Brew
Or maybe Wine? Grin

midsomermurderess · 25/09/2020 11:52

I was on holiday recently and heard some massive bores at the next table going on and on about their coffee. So, you like coffee. So dull.

Ideasplease322 · 25/09/2020 11:52

I am going to hijack this thread and ask for recommendations for a filter coffee machine😊.

I love the look for the Smeg machine, but want one that will brew a pot on a timer so it’s ready when I wake up.

Any good recommendations?

Squirrelblanket · 25/09/2020 11:54

@Flavabobble We call it 'real coffee' in our house too. Grin

Ideasplease322 · 25/09/2020 11:55

Also I hate people thinking I am a snob becoase I don’t like instant coffee.

I genuinely don’t like the taste, and didn’t realise I liked coffee until my mum bought a cafetière. In those days it only came out for dinner parties😂.

They are different drinks. It’s okay to like one but not the other. My mum likes instant, but doesn’t like filter.

AdoptedBumpkin · 25/09/2020 11:56

Prefer posh coffee but happy with instant. More of a tea drinker, mind you.

ErickBroch · 25/09/2020 11:56

We use Nespresso but tbh I don't consider that snobby as some friends of mine LOVE coffee and make it from fancy beans etc. Think Nespresso is just a nice step up from instant! Also, regarding waste, Nespresso have a good recycling scheme - we recycle all our pods and they collect for free.
