Instant or ‘snobby’ coffee???

Imloosingmyshit · 25/09/2020 10:30

I have over the years become a bit of a coffee snob. Yes I will admit it. I used to drink instant. Was introduced to filter coffee and thought it was heaven!! Then years later used a friends nespresso machine and have never looked back. So, are you a coffee snob or is it just a hot drink???
Yabu. It’s just a drink
Yanbu. No instant for me!

They’re different drinks!

Traditional cappuccino machine vs. Nespresso vs. mocha or caffettiere vs. Starbucks silly business vs. instant.

And there are variations within each group.
All have their place.

YABU!

Don't use Nespresso ever throw the machine away. The inventor of it severely regrets it. Get a delonghi espresso machine and a packet of lavazza keep it chilled. Source some raw cacao and grate it on the top with a smidge of foam.

Love love LOVE the smell of fresh beans being ground Don’t do that myself, wouldn’t know where To start or what’s a good bean for me

I will drink both.

SonjaMorgan · 25/09/2020 10:59

I only drink freshly ground coffee and wouldn't have instant or the pods. Once you get used to good coffee I don't think you can go back.

SallySeven · 25/09/2020 11:00

Except I don't drink the capsule type!

I have a ceramic drip coffee funnel thingy. It's satisfyingly low tech.

notso · 25/09/2020 11:01

I loathe the words snobby and posh, it comes from many years of being teased at school for having a different accent.

Anyway, in answer to the OP instant gives me an instant migraine so it has to be fresh for me.

SerenDippitty · 25/09/2020 11:03

I like both instant and snobby coffee and keep both in the house. We’ll have snobby coffee after a nice dinner with wine. I drink instant during the day occasionally. I keep both a premium instant and Azzera in. I’ve tried Nespresso and was not impressed. Oh and we use a cafetière to make fresh coffee. Any electrical machine for the maki g of coffee is a waste of money IMO.

potter5 · 25/09/2020 11:04

Fresh, not instant.

CoralFish · 25/09/2020 11:04

I don't like instant coffee. It tastes different to normal coffee. My partner prefers instant, which I completely understand, as they taste different! I consider them two completely different drinks.

I admit to having a Nespresso machine AND feeling guilty about the effect of the environment. I tried refillable capsules for a while but didn't get on with them, and have now compromised on the 'compostable' ones. (They go in the food waste as they need to be heat composted, not ordinary garden composted.)

thepeopleversuswork · 25/09/2020 11:07

I do find it a bit bizarre that people get all class war about coffee vs tea...

I've come across the assumption that drinking coffee at all makes you a bit lah-di-dah and drinking "posh" coffee makes you a roaring snob.

Its a British thing too: in many parts of the world people drink coffee without the idea that they are trying to be upwardly mobile.

Quite odd really that people attach so much significance to this.

Imloosingmyshit · 25/09/2020 11:07

I must admit rather ashamedly (is that a word?) that I haven’t thought about the environmental impact of coffee pods! Blush I shall look for the reusable ones - that’s a thing , isn’t it??

Instant is fine.

Like all treats: drink too much fresh coffee and it loses its charm.

seayork2020 · 25/09/2020 11:09

I drink instant at home and work, unless I get a coffee made at home/work that 100% the same as a posh Cafe one then i don't see the point of home coffee machines

I love Cafe proper coffee in Cafes though

ShinyPie · 25/09/2020 11:10

I think we have a decent variety of instant coffees in the UK, some of which are more than palatable (Azera, Alta Rica, Cafe Direct Machu Picchu). I'll happily drink these if I'm in the office.

Having ssid that, coffee from an espresso machine is objectively better. We inherited a decent one from DH's office building and bought a cheap grinder for beans. I quite enjoy the ritual of it all and tasting the flavour profile of a new variety.

Although since WFH, I've had to be mindful of how much I'm drinking, as it tends to be more caffeinated than the average cup of instant!

goose124 · 25/09/2020 11:11

I haven't drunk instant for years. We bought a bean to cup coffee machine and it's the best coffee I've ever had, much nicer than Costa/Nero etc.

RomanyBlood · 25/09/2020 11:12

Proper coffee with good beans here.

But made in a cafetière. No messing with machines or wasteful pods.

keeprocking · 25/09/2020 11:12

I use my 45 year old cafetiere or instant if I'm in a rush, can't stand the pod machines, I've never had a decent cup from one of them.
I wonder how many are like me, if I'm somewhere where I don't know the quality of the coffee I order tea as I can't tell one tea from another.

MoreToExplore · 25/09/2020 11:12

Probably in the middle. Love my nespresso and Costa coffee. Instant is ok.

Dislike filter coffee or cafetière coffee and the fancy coffee my DH makes with the grinder etc.

Lemonsyellow · 25/09/2020 11:13

I just have a basic stovetop moka pot.

I would have thought Nespresso was rather downmarket and looked down on - the Pandora jewellery of the coffee market. Very expensive, takes up space, you’re locked in to buying items to make it work, environmentally terrible, completely unnecessary, etc.

keeprocking · 25/09/2020 11:13

Fresh, not instant.

Unless you're roasting beans it's hardly fresh!

Angrymum22 · 25/09/2020 11:16

Instant coffee gives me stomach cramp (apart from Millicano) fresh coffee doesn’t. I have an proper espresso machine at home but it’s fiddly, I don’t rate pod coffee so cafetière is my go to coffee maker.
I would use the espresso machine more if we didn’t have such hard water. It’s a half day job to de scale it.

haba · 25/09/2020 11:18

Try leaf tea- it will open your mind!

I couldn't vote. Obviously, yanbu for drinking real coffee. However, yabu for using the term snobby, but also for promoting Nespresso- coffee pods are an environmental disaster. So so wasteful, and coffee can be made with such simple equipment very quickly (cafetiere, stovetop pot, etc).

HelpMeh · 25/09/2020 11:19

I would've thought Nespresso is a step down from filter coffee? It's definitely a planet killer.

There are companies out there who do coffee subscriptions delivered to you weekly if you want to try some different blends.

PigletJohn · 25/09/2020 11:19

I happen not to like instant coffee.

This is quite separate from the level of snobbiness I have.
