Bloody Hobbies - they aren't outing!

ummnamechange · 24/09/2020 13:11

Can't we just be clear here - most hobbies aren't in any way outing.

Cycling - millions of blokes fuck off and do this at weekends.
Fishing - see above but with added lard
trainspotting
model railways
playing with space dollies (sorry action figures)
warhammer
sewing
going to the gym
swimming
running

None of these are outing as hundreds of thousands of people do em and frankly we dont give a flying fist fuck about about it.

Outing activities - would be household names...
Olympic triathlete
formation cave diving
international superspy

Cmon just tell us - if yer fella spends all saturday cycling round...

Just meant to be light hearted

Ditto jobs.

Unless you're the host of the radio 1 breakfast show or are the Duchess of Cambridge I don't think we'll work it out.

OrigamiPenguinArmy · 24/09/2020 13:21

My DH genuinely has an unusual hobby, no I’m not going to say what it is but it would probably be as unusual as say amateur taxidermy. So not only unusual but memorable as well, everyone who knows us knows what his hobby is. I know he’s not the only man in the country with this hobby, but if I mentioned it in a post, someone I knew read it, wondered if this amateur taxidermist was Origami’s husband, advanced searched me and read my other posts they could easily identify me.

StealthPolarBear · 24/09/2020 13:21

Ah but with jobs there are only usually ever three other people in THE WHOLE WORLD do the job they do. It's very specialised.

ummnamechange · 24/09/2020 13:22

to be fair I couldn't tell you who is running the radio one breakfast show - so even that wouldnt be outing

OP posts:
BikeRunSki · 24/09/2020 13:23

I agree, and I’m a cyclist.
My job and city location would narrow it down to 2 or 3 people, but I’m not precious about it. I talk about my job on here fairly often - this morning even - because I can quite often help house buyers who are worried about flood risk.

ummnamechange · 24/09/2020 13:23

origami - you do have to tell us now.

Does he have a shed that he does it in?

You missed golf :)
StillCoughingandLaughing · 24/09/2020 13:24

My favourite recently was the woman who was going somewhere ‘Similar to Australia, but not Australia; think New Zealand’. So New fucking Zealand then!!

randomsabreuse · 24/09/2020 13:24

Can think of some hobbies that would be outing to other people that do that hobby... assuming you do that hobby to a decent amateur level.

Running, Cycling, Fishing, Tennis, not so much, Fencing, Tiddlywinks, Bog Snorkeling, competing at Ice skating (UK). Competing at national level at anything would probably be outing to others who did that same sport, because obscure sports are a small world and you probably spend enough time chatting at events to know enough about other aspects of their life (plus location from region/club affiliation) to "out" them to you...

RedskyAtnight · 24/09/2020 13:24

I have a colleague whose hobby is German long sword fighting. So I would imagine that is fairly outing.

Can we pretend I said his hobby was cycling?

OrigamiPenguinArmy · 24/09/2020 13:25

He prepares it in a shed, but does it in a field.

ummnamechange · 24/09/2020 13:26

golf isnt a hobby its an excuse for two blokes to go for a walk wearing funny clothes without teenagers throwing bottles at them

Elbels · 24/09/2020 13:27

Especially combined with

My DH's incredibly outing hobby (think golf)

Why do I need to think anything, I don't want to play your bizarre guessing game.

thesquirrelsnuts · 24/09/2020 13:28

well if I told you that my dh spends most saturdays outside the wetherspoons on Carlisle High Street shouting GOURANGA at passers by, that might be outing actually.

thesquirrelsnuts · 24/09/2020 13:28

oh bugger, i'd better NC now Blush

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 24/09/2020 13:29

@OrigamiPenguinArmy

He prepares it in a shed, but does it in a field.
He kills people in his shed then buries the bodies in a field? 😁
Covert20 · 24/09/2020 13:29

What @OrigamiPenguinArmy said - it may not be outing time MN as a whole, but add it to the rest of your posts on an advanced searched and someone who knows you, can work out it’s you. Which is what most people are worried about when thinking about being outed.

MenaiMna · 24/09/2020 13:30

Thank you very much for "space dollies" - finally giving them the respect they deserve 😉

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 24/09/2020 13:30

origami oooh, it's your husband who dances nearly naked but for an elaborately prepared headdress made from scavenged local birds feathers and in season nuts/fruits in the field near me then. Can you ask him to keep the bloody noise down
Grin

tectonicplates · 24/09/2020 13:30

Also, for "alternative" people - LARPing isn't outing either. Lots of people do it.

Covert20 · 24/09/2020 13:30

Hi @thesquirrelsnuts ! Long time now see? How you keeping?

🤣 not really...

MinaMurray · 24/09/2020 13:31

Taken as an individual post, I’d agree, a hobby would rarely be outing.

I think it’s more of an issue if someone does a advance search on posts made by that username, and uses the hobby as one more bit of information to confirm whether it’s the person they know in RL.

Frownette · 24/09/2020 13:31

I find it a bit odd as well! I don't like the word hobby either, I'd prefer activity.

Most are perfectly normal day to day stuff, if it's something unusual and you know people who read MN then that's different.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 24/09/2020 13:31

What the hell is LARPing?!?
