Bloody Hobbies - they aren't outing!

ummnamechange · 24/09/2020 13:11

Can't we just be clear here - most hobbies aren't in any way outing.

Cycling - millions of blokes fuck off and do this at weekends.
Fishing - see above but with added lard
trainspotting
model railways
playing with space dollies (sorry action figures)
warhammer
sewing
going to the gym
swimming
running

None of these are outing as hundreds of thousands of people do em and frankly we dont give a flying fist fuck about about it.

Outing activities - would be household names...
Olympic triathlete
formation cave diving
international superspy

Cmon just tell us - if yer fella spends all saturday cycling round...

Just meant to be light hearted

@countrygirl99 trec?

MereDintofPandiculation · 24/09/2020 15:25

I would guess that most people aren't worried about being "outed" to the nation at large, they're worried about offering confirmation to their already suspicious friend.

DrDavidBanner · 24/09/2020 15:30

I had to Google black my little pony because I just couldn't imagine what he would look like. but the similarity is uncanny Grin
@bookmum08 most of the photos on my phone show him covered in mud Grin but this is a fairly decent one. He has a white star you can't see here.
He surely is handsome! He looks like he is wearing tasselled Ugg boots Smile I bet he takes a lot of grooming. How big is your curry comb Grin

LakieLady · 24/09/2020 15:32

I once posted on here about a hideous house that had been built near me and ruined the view of a very beautiful house. Another MNer lives in the same town and knew exactly the house I was talking about (thankfully, it wasn't her house - that would have been Blush).

It's a fairly small town, and if that MNer has been here a few years, she could work out who I worked for from some of my posts and probably the part of town I live in. If she knew someone who also works for my employer (and they're a big local employer) she almost certainly could have found out who I am.

Just asking anyone who works there and lives local would probably be enough, we all know each other and I often offer lifts to colleagues.

She was very nice though, and didn't seem like a stalker, and I'm not very interesting so I doubt if she'd have gone to the effort of finding out more. Grin She hasn't come and egged my house because of my lefty views and swearing or anything.

FippertyGibbett · 24/09/2020 15:33

If a hobby is something you do on days off and at the weekend, my hobby must be tidying up and cleaning the house ☹️

HammerandDrill · 24/09/2020 15:34

@Covert20

What *@OrigamiPenguinArmy* said - it may not be outing time MN as a whole, but add it to the rest of your posts on an advanced searched and someone who knows you, can work out it’s you. Which is what most people are worried about when thinking about being outed.
THIS! I have worked out who a couple of people are in the past in this way (by accident!).
CousinDolores · 24/09/2020 15:40

The whole 'think golf' thing in opening descriptions makes me feel like I'm on Family Fortunes star prize round, trying to think of the second most popular item you keep in your glovebox. My mind just goes blank.

stripeyd · 24/09/2020 15:40

You're so aggressive about something so minor. Are you ok?

Palavah · 24/09/2020 15:41

@ummnamechange

to be fair I couldn't tell you who is running the radio one breakfast show - so even that wouldnt be outing
waves
countrygirl99 · 24/09/2020 15:42

@Tyersal yes. You too?

IvySpivey · 24/09/2020 15:48

My DH likes bloody steam engines! Nutter.

MrsGrindah · 24/09/2020 15:48

OPs post isn’t at all aggressive!

I hate it when people describe a scenario with lots of Person A, Person B etc and refuse to reveal which person they are in the story. What’s the point of that?!

BobbinThreadbare123 · 24/09/2020 15:49

Fencing in German is blossfechten. There's no long composite for it, it's just their version of fencing. Kunst des Fechten, im Stil der Deutschen Wink

redlockscelt · 24/09/2020 15:51

@OrigamiPenguinArmy

He prepares it in a shed, but does it in a field.
Amateur rocketry.

My DH has a hobby but it'd be outing so I can't tell you he plays golf at a naturist centre he doesn't like me telling him to look after his balls

wigglerose · 24/09/2020 16:07

If a poster is worried about a hobby or something being outing, just change it to something similar. So, if your DH spends hours each Saturday cycling, say he spends hours each Saturday golfing. No-one would know and no-one would think you are lying and cast aspersions on what you're saying as being untruthful.

Also, the idea of people figuring out who I am fills me with the horror.

FubsyRanbler · 24/09/2020 16:14

@RedskyAtnight

I have a colleague whose hobby is German long sword fighting. So I would imagine that is fairly outing.

Can we pretend I said his hobby was cycling?

Yes, that’s the sort of hobbies my family go in for, like playing the serpent, making obsidian wind chimes and wing-walking. Some hobbies do have a small number of participants. A friend had an item stolen, put on sale 8,000 miles away and someone went ‘Oi, that’s Mike’s’ and it was reclaimed. But most are really not.
FubsyRanbler · 24/09/2020 16:17
@bookmum08 most of the photos on my phone show him covered in mud Grin but this is a fairly decent one. He has a white star you can't see here.
He’s stunning!
Is he a Friesian?

LakieLady · 24/09/2020 16:20

@Aroundtheworldin80moves, is it kayaking or canoeing?

Nannewnannew · 24/09/2020 16:21

On a similar note was a poster who was complaining about the time that she spent on caring for her DCs pets, but she didn’t want to reveal what they were as potentially outing, eventually she revealed that it was guinea pigs! 😂

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 24/09/2020 16:25
@Aroundtheworldin80moves, is it kayaking or canoeing?
Canoeing.

bookmum08 · 24/09/2020 16:28

countrygirl99 he is a very nice looking horse. Thanks for the picture.

ummnamechange · 24/09/2020 16:32

see, i know people who kayak and others who go to star parties (in other words sitting in a field looking up) both involve obsessing about the weather, and both involve wrestling with stuff too big for the car Smile

I did know a chap who collected airline sick bags. He was, shall we say, odd.

Astronomy would be a lot simpler... We live rurally on top of a hill....

PainyRuddles · 24/09/2020 16:44

@thesquirrelsnuts

well if I told you that my dh spends most saturdays outside the wetherspoons on Carlisle High Street shouting GOURANGA at passers by, that might be outing actually.
Theres a guy that used to do that back in the 80's in Edinburgh too, I think your safe.
