Bloody Hobbies - they aren't outing!

ummnamechange · 24/09/2020 13:11

Can't we just be clear here - most hobbies aren't in any way outing.

Cycling - millions of blokes fuck off and do this at weekends.
Fishing - see above but with added lard
trainspotting
model railways
playing with space dollies (sorry action figures)
warhammer
sewing
going to the gym
swimming
running

None of these are outing as hundreds of thousands of people do em and frankly we dont give a flying fist fuck about about it.

Outing activities - would be household names...
Olympic triathlete
formation cave diving
international superspy

Cmon just tell us - if yer fella spends all saturday cycling round...

Just meant to be light hearted

actually we should ask for the best / weirdest hobbies you have heard. I know someone who built their own still to make their own Gin. This is a good "hobby" in my book.

@daisyjgrey, laughed out loud at your post! Thanks!

ShebaShimmyShake · 24/09/2020 14:30

Instead of saying "his hobby", people should just lie about what the hobby is. If the nature of it is relevant, you'll have to tell us anyway and if it isn't, it won't matter.

JohnMcCainsDeathStare · 24/09/2020 14:36

LARPing is surprisingly mainstream nowadays - started doing it 20 years ago. Don't do it anymore because I can't handle being the invisible women in field full of big egos and a damp tent.

DH gave up when he realised he spent more time playing on his DS than LARP and when he walked into town for a bag of sweets for something that wasn't fest LARP.

JosephineDeBeauharnais · 24/09/2020 14:38

I just think it’s rude and slightly creepy to identify someone without giving your own name, especially in a PM.

JosephineDeBeauharnais · 24/09/2020 14:39

Sorry that was @MoaningMinniee

ChristmasCarcass · 24/09/2020 14:41

Hobbies - agree re: cycling.

It’s all part of building a picture though isn’t it? If I say I’m a structural engineer, that isn’t outing (and I’m not one anyway). But a female structural engineer in her 40s with two children and a cyclist husband? Can’t be that many of those around.

People should name-change more.

countrygirl99 · 24/09/2020 14:48

I do a minority equestrian sport, probably max a few hundred people in the country. I also have a very distinctive horse. Put the 2 together and most people in my sport would probably think "oh her" unless they stuck to events outside England. DH also does a minority sport and has been involved in top level and events (not competing but on the telly) so a lot of people in that world would work out who as well. But most people not involved wouldn't even understand what our hobbies are.

JustLetMeLookAtTheFuckingHam · 24/09/2020 14:49

"I also have a very distinctive horse"

I think this may be my favourite MN hobby related quote ever.

user1536853684 · 24/09/2020 14:54

Duck herding sounds fun.

BogRollBOGOF · 24/09/2020 14:55

@tectonicplates

LARP stands for Live Action Role Play - which is basically where you dress up in fantasy-novel-style costumes and act out your characters. Basically like adults having a dressing up box and making up their own fictional universe. It's particularly popular with goths, metalheads, geeks, nerds, and people who read fantasy novels (which I hate).
I love it down at ASDA on a bank holiday weekend and there's hundreds of them topping up on supplies for their nearby event Grin
countrygirl99 · 24/09/2020 14:55

@JustLetMeLookAtTheFuckingHam he has had his photo taken out on rides so often it has gone to his head. He looks like the love child of Black Beauty and My Little Pony

Theterrible42s · 24/09/2020 15:01

My DH and I both have pretty unusual jobs, I'd put money on us being the only couple in the country who do this exact combination of jobs (obviously we're not the only people who do them, you know what I mean).

bookmum08 · 24/09/2020 15:04

countrygirl99 I am sorry but we NEED a picture of your horse. You could fuzz his face out if you want to protect his identity. Please....

TempestHayes · 24/09/2020 15:05

What baffles me is this notion that men have "hobbies" at the weekends but the women seem not to.

My DH does nothing at all. He just works.

I'm the one out doing stuff.

RedRumTheHorse · 24/09/2020 15:10

Users should just put their hobby down as golf if they do cycling, and if they do golf put cycling.

TheDuchessofMalfy · 24/09/2020 15:14

Couldn’t agree more!

And if anyone says “think” as an alternative to “for example” it puts me off straight away.

JustLetMeLookAtTheFuckingHam · 24/09/2020 15:14
@JustLetMeLookAtTheFuckingHam he has had his photo taken out on rides so often it has gone to his head. He looks like the love child of Black Beauty and My Little Pony
Photo definitely needed!

Shepherdspyreads · 24/09/2020 15:14

It is very irritating and I tend just get bored if posters are that vague. I do understand that potentially outing but why not just lie & choose a similarly obscure hobby (or similarly mainstream!!!). Then it's not outing and it is less annoying to us readers.

countrygirl99 · 24/09/2020 15:19

@bookmum08 most of the photos on my phone show him covered in mud Grin but this is a fairly decent one. He has a white star you can't see here.

Tyersal · 24/09/2020 15:21

My hobbies are fairly common but there are only about 30 people who do my job in the UK

Tyersal · 24/09/2020 15:22

@countrygirl99 hes flipping handsome swoon

Leaannb · 24/09/2020 15:23

Why is i0t so bad for men to jave hobbies? Women have hobbies too

TooTrueToBeGood · 24/09/2020 15:24

@ummnamechange

golf isnt a hobby its an excuse for two blokes to go for a walk wearing funny clothes without teenagers throwing bottles at them
I assume you have never tried playing golf on a Glasgow council course.
MrsToothyBitch · 24/09/2020 15:24

I found a MNer from another country in the UK who did a variant of my hobby after she "outed" herself on a hobbies thread. I mentioned what I do under a NC for that thread. Couple of PMs later and we found someone in common from that world, which is small but hardly ultra niche.

I can see why people are cautious.
