Bloody Hobbies - they aren't outing!

ummnamechange · 24/09/2020 13:11

Can't we just be clear here - most hobbies aren't in any way outing.

Cycling - millions of blokes fuck off and do this at weekends.
Fishing - see above but with added lard
trainspotting
model railways
playing with space dollies (sorry action figures)
warhammer
sewing
going to the gym
swimming
running

None of these are outing as hundreds of thousands of people do em and frankly we dont give a flying fist fuck about about it.

Outing activities - would be household names...
Olympic triathlete
formation cave diving
international superspy

Cmon just tell us - if yer fella spends all saturday cycling round...

Just meant to be light hearted

I reckon about 90% of participants in my hobby are male, so I'm one of the few women. We all know each other in some way. It is also a fairly niche hobby - not the sort of thing that people forget, once they know.

Add that to my DH's and DC's occupations and that some of my relatives live in X country, all of which I have mentioned on here, and I'm the only person in the country it could be Grin

Nice horse, by the way.

Changenamefortoday · 24/09/2020 16:51

@ummnamechange

see, i know people who kayak and others who go to star parties (in other words sitting in a field looking up) both involve obsessing about the weather, and both involve wrestling with stuff too big for the car Smile

I did know a chap who collected airline sick bags. He was, shall we say, odd.

Ha the sick bag guy been on Pointless? I seem to remember someone had that as a hobby.
MinaMurray · 24/09/2020 17:12

Yes, that’s the sort of hobbies my family go in for, like playing the serpent, making obsidian wind chimes and wing-walking.

What is playing the serpent? Is that a real thing?

QueenofLouisiana · 24/09/2020 17:20

I avoid giving too much information out about DS’s sport. He does compete at national level and a bit of search would tell you where we live: narrowing the field down quite a lot. I avoid mentioning his particular events.

dollypartonscoat · 24/09/2020 17:21

If someone knew OH's hobby and matched that up with our hometown that would narrow him down to 6 people. I've just written "him" and as 2 of the group are female then it's 4.

3 of them have no kids so that is him "outed"

PoloNeckKnickers · 24/09/2020 17:24

@OrigamiPenguinArmy

He prepares it in a shed, but does it in a field.
Does he build and launch rockets? Haven't RTFT btw.
MollyButton · 24/09/2020 17:25

@ummnamechange I was at Uni with someone with that hobby - can there be more than one or is it the same guy? He seemed perfectly nice except for his od d collection.

dollypartonscoat · 24/09/2020 17:34

@Aroundtheworldin80moves is he a kite surfer?

@Theterrible42s an astronaut and a 3 Michelin star chef?

dollypartonscoat · 24/09/2020 17:36

I've also found someone's house from a property thread once and I recognised an old friend.

Unfortunately I'd told her before I realised the personal nature of some of the things that she'd posted about Sad

TheSunIsStillShining · 24/09/2020 17:57

@RedskyAtnight

I have a colleague whose hobby is German long sword fighting. So I would imagine that is fairly outing.

Can we pretend I said his hobby was cycling?

Could you ask your colleague how he started out and if there is a training facility he goes to? My son has been wanting to do this for ages.... Although, he is the type who can hide behind a lamppost, so I do have a smile when I think of him trying it for the first time :D
raddledoldmisanthropist · 24/09/2020 18:03

I agree OP. No one could work out what my DP does if I mentioned that his hobbies are building model buses and taking a surprisingly large number of IT lessons.

FallonsTeaRoom · 24/09/2020 18:03

@thesquirrelsnuts

well if I told you that my dh spends most saturdays outside the wetherspoons on Carlisle High Street shouting GOURANGA at passers by, that might be outing actually.
Now I thought that my DH was the only person to do this... Confused

As a Carlilse-Ian, all I think is ‘which Wetherspoons, must be the old man one!’
Tyersal · 24/09/2020 18:44

@countrygirl99 no, would love to but my boy prefers to keep all four hooves on the ground!!!

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 24/09/2020 18:52

@MinaMurray

LARPing = live action role playing. I knew someone at university who did that, he used to dress up as an elf at weekends.
Ooh, I've always thought that sounded like fun. Ta!
BewareTheBeardedDragon · 24/09/2020 18:54

@Aroundtheworldin80moves

DHs hobby involves checking the weather forecast for several days beforehand, then wrestling the equipment that is longer than the car on top of the car. Packing all the other equipment. When he gets there, he has to unload it and transport it to the destination. Then has a few fun hours, before doing the reverse to get home, then cleaning it all and getting it back in the garage. Luckily DDs enjoy it, so go to. Sometimes I go, sometimes I enjoy the peace.

But I can't tell you, it's far too outing!

Is he an amateur weather forecaster?
ummnamechange · 24/09/2020 18:55

@MollyButton does he obsessively photograph animal droppings?

SimonJT · 24/09/2020 18:58

Mine is a second job really and I have previously posted about the club I play for. We have multiple teams, our club also allows people to be annonymous, so if you wish you’re name isn’t on team lists and you’re photo isn’t on the site/SM.

If anyone is sad enough to pop down to some of our games to identify me they can go ahead.

I do have a neighbour on here somewhere, I mentioned an actor that lives in our block of flats and thats how we identified each other. No idea who she is in real life, but she has probably identified who I am in real life.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 24/09/2020 19:07

Some lol worthy comments on this thread, not as many as I'd hoped earlier. but thanks OP 👍

countrygirl99 · 24/09/2020 19:17

@tyersal you can miss out the jumps, it's only 10 points. Ilove the orienteering bit best, bit rubbish at the control of paces.

BikeRunSki · 24/09/2020 19:54

@Leaannb

Why is i0t so bad for men to jave hobbies? Women have hobbies too
It would appear not on MN, where everyone seems to robed their spare time passive aggressively looking after their children do their husbands can go cycling etc.

Back in the real world I cycle, run, climb hills, and swim wild with clubs and friends - mix of male and female, with and without dependant children- whilst DH looks after the dc. Then I look after them whilst DH goes out and does his stuff. Now the DC are bigger, we have things we all do together.

NameChange657 · 24/09/2020 21:29

My ex used to have a weird hobby, although he'd say he was "walking the dog", no. He would sit for hours watching the lorries go by marking down which he'd seen and discuss it with mates online... he was 24 at the time. Ironically, also in a very "outing, important only I can do this job" job. Basically, he was a recruitment consultant for a FTSE 100 firm. Yeah, I may as well emigrate now huh?

Hohofortherobbers · 24/09/2020 21:40

My dh not only runs but also cycles. Now you must know who I am so I'm off to name change

elizabethdraper · 24/09/2020 21:50

Oh I have sill and make my own gin.

My husband makes beer. He spends his weekends judg ing homebrew ing competitions

I wonder if this is identifying?

FubsyRanbler · 24/09/2020 21:54

It’s a bass wind instrument, popular in the 18C. You need huge fingers though, so not my choice.
