Bloody Hobbies - they aren't outing!

Can't we just be clear here - most hobbies aren't in any way outing.

Cycling - millions of blokes fuck off and do this at weekends.
Fishing - see above but with added lard
trainspotting
model railways
playing with space dollies (sorry action figures)
warhammer
sewing
going to the gym
swimming
running

None of these are outing as hundreds of thousands of people do em and frankly we dont give a flying fist fuck about about it.

Outing activities - would be household names...
Olympic triathlete
formation cave diving
international superspy

Cmon just tell us - if yer fella spends all saturday cycling round...

Just meant to be light hearted

No sorry, yabu.

No one else crochets blankets (and I will now have to name change)

The sad thing is that posters don't want to admit it's golf or cycling because they think their ranting will then immediately out them to any friends on MN. But truthfully, I've read a LOT of those golf/cycling/secret hobbies threads and they don't out anyone because the reality is that they're all the same:

Women works or stays home with kids but is already doing 95% of all childcare as well as cooking, cleaning, shopping, planning, thinking etc.

"D"H has busy job, earning significantly more than her. Which, of course, exhausts him. So he needs a break.

"D"H thinks that being out for at least one full day on the weekend is perfectly reasonable and that he needs that break and that she is unreasonable because she isn't jumping with joy every time.

Variations - but still too common to identify an individual:

  • He spends all their money on said hobby but she can't even afford to get her hair done, never mind join an expensive gym, go away for the weekend
  • His hobby is regularly multiple days of the weekend as well as during the week because he's part of a team/group OR it's work related OR he's training for something specific. His wife is expected to see this as totally reasonable at all times.
SpaceOP · 25/09/2020 16:34

Oh, and I totally forgot that even if she DID find a way to get a day for herself, inevitably in the secret hobby threads it's pointless because she'd come back to feral children, who haven't been fed and the house covered in mud with the oven needing to be thrown away and replaced after he burnt it attempting to make chips.

Posters who really don't be identify in real life really need to name change often and be careful.

Some posters REALLY have too much time on their hands, are spiteful and will name-search extensively trying to catch people out, comparing threads and posts. Not great when they do identify someone in RL, it happens

@imissthesouth

Jobs annoy me the most. people's "specialised" jobs really aren't that outing, unless you mention your location, company name and position.
Nope, I am a consultant in a small specialty, there are about 300 of us in the UK, and I am the only female redhead under 50. Even just giving my gender and the city I lived in would narrow it down to 2-3 people if I worked outside of London.

Which is why I don’t whinge about my marriage under this username Grin

goose1964 · 25/09/2020 22:16

Ski jumping,in the UK , would be outing 😁

StillCoughingandLaughing · 25/09/2020 22:35

Not if you live in Tamworth or Milton Keynes.

DiseasesOfTheSheep · 25/09/2020 22:45

@Wbeezer I highly recommend horse archery Grin

DiseasesOfTheSheep · 25/09/2020 22:45

@DillonPanthersTexas

Alas, non-consensual tentpegging is a big problem...

Wbeezer · 25/09/2020 23:37

@DiseasesOfTheSheep sadly DS3, like a lot of horse loving boys, got to 13 and decided it was socially unacceptable to be into horses, if horse archery was available locally that might have made it more cool!

countrygirl99 · 26/09/2020 06:28

@Wbeezer if he had lasted a couple more years his mates would have been envious of the girl to boy ratio.

I have seen someone outed on another forum who was identified from posts on here, it truly made me see how spiteful and obsessive some people are. I name change regularly and alter minor details.
DiseasesOfTheSheep · 26/09/2020 11:22

@Wbeezer now that is a shame. It's the only downside of horse archery that it's such a small sport and limited by region. There are lots of chaps doing it to lure in boys and make it seem more socially acceptable!

Wbeezer · 27/09/2020 10:57

@Diseasesofthesheep yes we're in Scotland so v far away, i was looking into holidays but for various reasons it didn't work out.
He did go on a lovely half day trek in the Cairngorms with me the other day having not ridden for the years, he really enjoyed it. I on the other hand fell off due to having turned into an old stiffy since the last time I was in the saddle! I was sore for a fortnight.

KeepingPlain · 27/09/2020 11:06

Instead of saying "his hobby", people should just lie about what the hobby is. If the nature of it is relevant, you'll have to tell us anyway and if it isn't, it won't matter.

Because that makes far too much sense. Same with the job thing. It's amazing these people manage to get 6 figure salaries while being too stupid to figure that out.

Alovera · 28/09/2020 20:26

@ummnamechange brave yes, also expensive, time consuming and requiring inordinate amount of storage space for all the bloody stuff! Still gets him out of the house for a few days per month Wine

Jumpingkangeroo · 28/09/2020 21:15

I thought it was over the stop until I saw a post elsewhere on another forum where some over invested stalker had found a poster on TES, mumsnet and possibly another forum and had been logging all their posts. Now I get it.

Jumpingkangeroo · 28/09/2020 21:16

*top grr

Elizaaa · 28/09/2020 21:28

What @OrigamiPenguinArmy said - it may not be outing time MN as a whole, but add it to the rest of your posts on an advanced searched and someone who knows you, can work out it’s you. Which is what most people are worried about when thinking about being outed.

Then surely not mentioning the other stuff would be better, rather than excluding 'my husband cycles' 🤔
