To tell my son he scraped a pass when he didn’t?

My son is due to take the 11 plus test in a month.

We paid for a private tutor last two years (as is the norm around here).
He has done a revision course And mocks.
He’s a bright boy and should pass.

However, he likely now won’t be going to grammar school as we will keep him at the private Prep school he currently goes to (that Goes up to year 8) and then on to another private school, which has its own admissions process rather than the 11 plus.

So... Pass or fail has no consequence whatsoever, and here’s the thing.... He has very very low self confidence. We are awaiting an adhd diagnosis (mild). He and his friends are competitive, actively encouraged by the school (a good thing IMO) and results will be discussed.

I am so worried about the impact on his self confidence if he does fail. I can’t tell you how much we have worked on building up his confidence over the last year, and it’s reaped so much. He’s so much happier, so much more settled. It is very positive but I strongly sense that an 11 plus fail will go deep, very deep and have a lingering negative impact.

Seeing as the impact of the result isn’t going to change our plan to keep him at current school (when we embarked on the 11 plus tutoring and process we didn’t think he would be staying but now we have sufficient funds to facilitate it, hence the change in plan. Still plan to take though, as head of current school says it will be very good preparation for the admissions process to the school we hope he will go to), AIBU to tell him that he did pass (but say that it was a scraped pass, but a pass nonetheless) if he does fail?

@pastandpresent

I don't think tutoring to pass entrance exam is wrong at all. Every parent want best for their children. If they can go to better school which may change the child's future, and you have means to do that, why not?

If the child who is academic and would thrive in the environment don't get the chance because others are tutored, the system is wrong, not the parents who wants best for their children.

It creates an artificial social divide on the back of having money to pay to help said child pass.

I agree it’s the system rather than the parents however, if their DC is bright enough why do they need tutoring?

I can set them up fir a huge fail as well as they won’t be able to keep up.

I can totally see your point, TableFlowerss tbh.
We live in the place where there are no grammar school, and certainly can't afford private so no actual experience, but I just can see why they do it.

Just because the child is bright enough doesn't mean they can learn without guidance. There are so many talk about reaching child's potential, why not to include the tutoring?

I m all for tutoring if the child wants it. Not for tutoring the child who is average to be tutored to enter better school for satisfaction of parents, only to fail, or life time of catching up.

I am sorry but I disagree.it's a false positive and if he finds out the truth his trust in you and his self belief will sink.
His self esteem will improve with his achievements, big or small, and perhaps doing a sport or hobby he is good at,or works to be good at,will help this.
But I would not lie to him.

It creates an artificial social divide on the back of having money to pay to help said child pass.

There is a social divide from the day a child is born.

Parents who are educated and can teach to the 11+ exam at home
Parents who can take their child to amazing places and improve their general knowledge
Parents who have homes full of books [anyone know that the one factor that predicts how far your child will go at school is number of books in the home?]
Parents who live in areas where other parents have high expectations for their kids

There is nothing wrong at all with tutoring to plug a gap in poor teaching or for kids who are a bit slow.

There is also nothing wrong with tutoring for 11+.

Many parents who do have tutors are making sacrifices so they can pay for that (I know, I tutored for years and years.)

What IS wrong is thinking a tutor has a magic wand and can turn an average child into a genius.

I think that may change as people use online books more and more. I read a huge amount but it’s all on Kindle. Threw out all my books as I have a dust allergy and they were exacerbating it. My husband is also a voracious reader but hasn’t picked up a hard copy book for years. Our son would not even realise that we like to read as we mostly do it when he is asleep!
Son has a lot of books though of course, and we read to him every night.

Choices not sacrifices. And let's not forget some kids have ALL those advantages you just listed while some have none.

Weren't we peddled some line about poor kids being offered a top quality Grammar education, pull them up by their bootstraps and all that?

I couldn't agree more and it's a very divisive way to operate state funded education.

Alwaysinpain · 15/09/2020 17:13

I think you building up this test into such a big deal is why is confidence is so low Hmm

Alwaysinpain · 15/09/2020 17:16

@Theramin

I can see where he gets his self-esteem issues from.
Quite!
