To feel not witty enough for Mumsnet, but too witty for Netmums

They should make another middle of the ground site for people like me. 😂 Is it just me, or do people on Mumsnet seem more "middle class" than people on Netmums?

@Roussette

Earlier up the thread someone commented on the use of non standard emojis. A poster here that uses assistive tech said that it can't 'read' the usual emojis, just the MN ones

I use the Windows ones... they work fine on here... 😃😎🎁💟🤡🐦

They work fine for most people, but assistive tech doesn't read them- at least, hers didn't. So she was unable to 'see' what was said.

@thewhitechair

Ahh I used to love babyandbump 10 years ago when I was first pregnant. It felt a bit different to mumsnet- ‘profile pictures’ next to each username and signatures at the bottom of posts, often with those little ‘tickers’ of your baby’s age or weeks pregnant. There was quite a community feel and you’d quickly recognise posters. I logged on a few months back and it’s pretty much dead now.

I loved babyandbump when I was having fertility issues, it was so helpful. It was a lovely, supportive community. It is very quiet now, unfortunately, I'm not sure why. I'm guessing everyone has moved on and not been replaced.

There are lovely corners of mumsnet, you just have to find them.

Overall, mumsnet does have a different feel to netmums, there's much more content. It can be more bitchy, but can also be very supportive. Depends on the thread and whether it is in AIBU.

@Flube

It’s kinda cute though, in a spectacularly misguided way, to complain that mn won’t allow advertising of their direct competition.

Interesting that you refer to the other place as MN's 'direct competition.' That in itself says a lot.

But then I have no vested interest here and cannot understand why some posters insist on vehemently taking sides. It's almost as if those posters take any slight criticism of MN to be personal insult.

I think you are deluded if you think it's any sort of competition. It's not the first MN spin off and I doubt it will be the last.
Facelikearustytractor · 03/09/2020 22:21

Was going to comment, but this thread has completely gone off at a tangent. Never heard of this new site, but will take a look. If it is a meeting place for the nutters that have been banned from here I probably won't get in with it.

I'm working class by the way OP. Netmums is not as histrionic and hormonal than this place, but I find it more entertaining here for that reason. It is a bit cliquey, but I name change every now and then for privacy reasons, so not keen on making friends anyway. I find NM annoying as people just quote mushy crap written on wall plaques in gift shops at you when you write about a problem. The advice is pretty good here and every now and then you get a hilarious thread. There is one about someone leaving out fat balls they made for the birds where their husband ate them and complained that the cakes was a bit greasy. That was a gem.

The benefits of some people here having a bit of money is that they can afford Mexican holiday homes. Without Mexican holiday homes you don’t get Mexican holiday home CFs.

Bet no one over there has a PB either.

Flube · 03/09/2020 22:44

I presume you are misquoting me @anon5000?

It was @nachthexe who referred to the other site as direct competition, not I. I find that an interesting take, and that in itself would put a whole other spin on MN's stance here.

@LockedInMadness
I’m so happy i’ve worked it out! I must say i have never heard of it and having had a look it’s not the best.

I bet none of the other places have their own Dragon, and thinking about assistive tech have realised why Archers is better as it is than being [bull]

Last one, you are going to get deleted.

giantangryrooster · 04/09/2020 01:27

Sorry for @BonnieBleu

LockedInMadness · 04/09/2020 08:45

Bloody hell mnhq are being a bit heavy handed with the deletions. I didn't even name the site ffs.

TotorosFurryBehind · 04/09/2020 11:41

I'd never heard of 'the other' site before this thread and it took me ages to work it out, as it's not easy to find as it's not a popular site with lots of users. I think this thread is giving it more significance than it deserves.

I don't find MN as witty as it used to be. I think the comments on here about having a masters sum up the mean sneeriness that is becoming too prevalent on here. As someone who dislikes the hun culture of Netmums, yes I would like a third option, but if the 'other' site is hoping to be that it's not even close.

Skingaling · 04/09/2020 11:43

I've been on here about 9 or 10 years and have never considered my wittiness in all of that time. I think I'm probably lower middle class if that makes any difference.

Wheresthesanitygone oh maybe I got it wrong then. I was talking about a forum that has these following categories under “General”. Off Topic > TV & Film > Rave About > Advice sections....

And it was a thread in the “Advice” section where I saw love hearts and kisses smile

I didn’t mind either way.

In the spirit of curiosity (okay: nosiness) I tried Googling the other place and came with a heading something like "Peanuts at Other Place" which I think is where you ended up.

LaMarschallin · 04/09/2020 12:43

PS xoxoxo 💕

Facelikearustytractor · 04/09/2020 13:33

I had a look and it's ok. I'm not sure I'd get on with how it is set out. Seemed like normal posters apart from some weird obsession with some MN posts and Justine what'shername, but I guess you get weird ones everywhere. To be honest I've been wanting to not waste my life posting on here, so I would quite like to get banned. Quite a lot of the people on here are either hormonal, fantasists or arseholes, but there are some posters who are witty, well informed and very knowledgeable, so I still around for them and ignore everyone else.

BonnieBleu · 04/09/2020 17:36

Omg I must have got it right!!! My comment was deleted.
Feel satisfied that I think I've worked it out now

Sunrise85 · 04/09/2020 17:42

What happened was .... I got it wrong (obviously)

And then I tried again and found another forum and saw a rampage of posts about Justine Whateverhersurnameis.

It was eye opening! Blush and very full on.

I’m disappointed in myself for being so naive in the first instance

HoratiotheHorsefly · 04/09/2020 21:03

Gosh I've not seen a nm v mn thread in about a year or so!

I like the robustness of mn but some of the posters of old have bitten the dust or namechanged.

It's all becoming a bit hun and xxx and that scares the shit out of me because I really dislike that... twee crap.
I do know of the 'other site', had a look months ago and thought fuck that shit and returned to MN within hours 😂

picklemewalnuts · 05/09/2020 08:05

I'm on there too. I don't go to a couple of the threads that get a lot of mention here. There are a few there who were really hurt by how certain conversations here are handled. When you've been a member for many years and were deleted/banned despite feeling you did nothing wrong, you are going to feel angry and critical about it.

I prefer the features and format there, by and large. People are people and so many threads are similar.

cricketmum84 · 05/09/2020 09:49

I wonder if "the other place" are trying to work out why their site visits and google searches have jumped in the last few days 😂

BIWI · 05/09/2020 09:57

I'm sure they know why @cricketmum84, as most of them seem to spend a lot of time here anyway, judging by the stuff they post over there!

I joined initially, then left because I couldn't bear the constant sniping about MN and Justine. If they don't like it, fair enough, but some of the posts were awful - and making up a whole load of shit to suit their own narratives.

Hopefully, for them, it will morph into something that has its own identity.
