To feel not witty enough for Mumsnet, but too witty for Netmums

They should make another middle of the ground site for people like me. 😂 Is it just me, or do people on Mumsnet seem more "middle class" than people on Netmums?

@CatBatCat

mumsnet isn't witty its just a bit cliquey
Definitely. I’ve not long come from netmums and I’m still finding my way round. I’ve been ripped apart on here by cliques over things I don’t understand. I’ve had shit for 2 days because I left a biscuit emoji on someone’s thread so I could find it again. Straight away I had messages telling me to fuck off, and how could I be so disrespectful posting a biscuit? No ones actually explained to me wtf a biscuits meant to mean
OhYeahYouSuck · 01/09/2020 21:49

It's funny how Netmums is allowed to be mentioned on here yet other places aren't. Almost like those with powers here are a bit afraid of the competition.

I don't think it's much competition really. Grin

I would think MN are happy to be rid of the MM obsessives.

Patbutcherismyhero · 01/09/2020 21:53

I used to use Netmums and I must admit I find it much more entertaining here. But it's also a lot meaner.

giantangryrooster · 01/09/2020 21:54

@Itsjustabitofbanter
Just recently there was a thread about the bisquit, you should search it and get the correct story.

A lot of posters think it is something nice, I started out thinking it was a flower Blush. But it kind of says 'buhu, how tough on you - NOT'. So actually not a very nice thing to post.

Better luck next time.

Mumsnet is a very broad church, OP. All of human life is here! Sure, there are trolls and vipers - the AIBU board is the place to go for a fight - but there are also some screamingly funny and witty threads - have a look in Classics - and also some hugely caring and practical support and advice for women suffering domestic abuse, depression, bereavement etc.

I’m always impressed by the range of knowledge across all fields - science, law, medicine, gardening, child psychology, you name it, you’ll find professionals on the site.
And there’s no “wittiness entry exam”. You don’t have to be flowing with jokes, just enjoy the razor wits of some of the other posters. They often make me laugh out loud, even when I’m having a bad day. It would be very dull if the site was segregated by class or wit, into a homogeneous echo chamber. Joy in diversity, as they used to say on Star Trek!

CrazedInsomniac · 01/09/2020 21:59

@Itsjustabitofbanter, maybe work out what the emojis mean before using them? Common sense of any new forum.

Depending on what the thread was about, posting a biscuit could have been the equivalent of screaming ‘Screw you!’ on a thread about a stillbirth.

Babdoc · 01/09/2020 21:59

Incidentally, when I started on MN, I thought that biscuit emoji was a pic of a breast, and meant that you thought the previous poster was a tit! I suppose that wasn’t too far off the mark, actually... Grin

Crunchymum · 01/09/2020 21:59

I can't tell the difference half the time. MN or NM? Lots more huns and X's on MN than I'm used to.

Thewhitefoxglove · 01/09/2020 22:02

There are some extremely witty people on here.

Tinyleaf · 01/09/2020 22:05

@Itsjustabitofbanter seems you're supposed to be psychic with subtext. I only know the biscuit is the 'taking the biscuit' cos of the snarky comments - probably by people like the ones giving you grief where

Waxonwaxoff0 · 01/09/2020 22:07

I'm kind of middle ground. I find MN very middle class and hard to relate to sometimes. I'm a working class gal from the Midlands, I'm not very educated and some of the things I like are seen as "chavvy" on here. But my SPAG is decent, I hate being called hun and I'm way too judgemental for Netmums so I prefer it here.

LockedInMadness · 01/09/2020 22:07

Less than there used to be unfortunately.

I didn’t know those sort of emojis could mean anything at all though?? You get the happy/sad faces etc which are obvious. I have seen flowers getting used which are pretty easy to work out, but I literally picked a random one to mark a place and it happened to be a biscuit. I do think that netmums is too heavily censored, but there’s too much nastiness on this site sometimes. I was told to fuck off with my biscuit on the post, I apologised in case I caused offence and asked what a biscuit meant, I got no explanation and more abuse

Itsjustabitofbanter · 01/09/2020 22:12

@giantangryrooster it was a really sad thread so I must have come across as a complete twat then. I’ll just avoid using emojis from now on

CarrieFour · 01/09/2020 22:16

Better to be the thick one in a good school in my attitude.

SentientAndCognisant · 01/09/2020 22:20

Mn is all about good schools and catchments

Goostacean · 01/09/2020 22:26

@Itsjustabitofbanter Looks like your username was pretty apt Grin Please don’t take it personally, every website has keyboard warriors.

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 01/09/2020 22:27

@MaskingForIt

What’s the difference between a Netmums user and a Mumsnet user?

About £30k and a Masters.

Do not underestimate nor be impolite about many of us on this forum! Some (many) have more than just one additional postgraduate advance qualification but do appreciate that not all are necessarily Oxbridge. That was "wit" although possibly somewhat truthful if in jest.

Genuine curiosity/question as did not hear of netmums until reading about it on this thread. Is it worth perusing?

TacosTuesday · 01/09/2020 22:27

Wittiness is the least of anyone's worries on here. I often think there are a host of Mumsnet unwritten rules for posters that are only learnt by osmosis. If you don't learn them you will be shredded and should leave for net mum's immediately. Examples include:

  • Any sense of entitlement to anything. Ever. Or just wanting anything. Game over.
  • Trying too hard in your post e.g humour or over engineered writing will face snarky comments about your creative writing aspirations
  • Grammatical mistakes
  • Using any new fangled word or terminology that Mumsnet doesn't know about and hasn't Approved for use will derail you and your thread (looking at you baby daddy)
giantangryrooster · 01/09/2020 22:31

@Itsjustabitofbanter oh, that wasn't good Confused.

Perhaps it's easier to not use emojies. Some posters look down on posters using them, there is the 'you are only a decent mnetter, if you only use the mn emojies' Hmm.

But I like the emojies even those not mn and damn I'm going to use them anyway Grin.

But please don't placemark with a dot or something use the options available, watch thread etc. Smile.

singersarp · 01/09/2020 22:32

Mumsnet seems to have a large contingent of posters with lots of trauma and fairly heavy mental health issues. It's gotten less and less witty over the years.

EmJay19 · 01/09/2020 22:33

Love this thread. What MNET is all about

Reubenshat · 01/09/2020 22:34

Netmums doesn’t hold a torch MN femboards. Posts can seem harsh but it’s a good solid site with many many intelligent posts. I’ve learned a lot in the seven years I’ve been here.

I’ve just found other sites wishywashy
