All the other kids in the family have a slight regional variant for mum or mummy but I don’t like it ... aibu to just want to be mum or mummy?

I'm overseas and it's mama here.

Same here.

Belindabelle · 30/08/2020 16:49

I think Mom is used in Birmingham area.

CruCru · 30/08/2020 16:50

I used to call my Mum "Mam" - then I went to school and stopped.

TeaChocKitKat · 30/08/2020 16:52

Goats - its used in parts of the Midlands.

MrsTerryPratchett · 30/08/2020 16:52

@GoatsInBoats

I’m curious as to where a Mom area is, I’ve never heard that used in the UK unless the family is American or Canadian. Enlighten me!

I call DM "Ma" and I'm mum to toddler DC.

GoatsInBoats · 30/08/2020 16:57

That map is v interesting, @MrsTerryPratchett, thanks!

bookmum08 · 30/08/2020 16:57

I have found that what your children actually call you may not be what they refer to you when talking to other people or other people might call you. As in a lot of children I know call their dad 'Papa' but will say to their friends "My Dad...." Not "My Papa...".
So don't worry if someone (HV, doctor) says something like "here we go back to Mammy" if you are always called Mummy. Sometimes I think you have your child's name for you and your 'job title'. My 'job' title is 'X's Mum' but my child's name for me is Mumma.

PablosHoney · 30/08/2020 17:04

Is it Mammy 😂

Redraptor · 30/08/2020 17:05

I live in northumberland and it's a mixture of mum and mam. I hate mam personally. My husband tries to push it as a joke. It sounds so geordie and we are not geordie

tappbar · 30/08/2020 17:06

Mammy yes

PotteringAlong · 30/08/2020 17:07

In my experience you cannot fight the tide! I was adamant I was going to be mum but am a definite mam (we are in a Geordie area!). They were all at nursery from a young age and it’s mam at nursery / school and so I’ve ended up just going with the flow.

Odile13 · 30/08/2020 17:09

You should be called whatever YOU want to be called - I think it’s cheeky for somebody else to tell you otherwise!

PablosHoney · 30/08/2020 17:09

I think it’s cute but I don’t think you are being unreasonable at all, your DC should call you what you like, you’re the one that’s going to hear it ad nauseam once they can speak

Fungster · 30/08/2020 17:11

It's not "mam" is it? Hideous. Makes me cringe...

katy1213 · 30/08/2020 17:11

I remember my own mother saying she didn't mind what we called her as long as it wasn't Mam/Mammy - I don't think it would have occurred to us, she was Mummy when we were small, then Mum. But I see why she objected. I'd put kids up for adoption rather than be Mam! Conjures up a fierce old besom in a pinny wielding a rolling pin.
Are there Mom areas outside the US? I've never encountered that.

TurnOffTheTv · 30/08/2020 17:12

My children can call me Mummy or by my actual name. I live in a Mam area but I’m not keen. Even my oldest daughter (in her 20’s) calls me Mummy when not around her mates!

OutOfDateAppleCrumble · 30/08/2020 17:12

I love in Mom country, both kids call me Mum.

PablosHoney · 30/08/2020 17:13

My DM’s partner is from Birmingham and he says Mom.

Exactly Grin

PablosHoney · 30/08/2020 17:14

😂😂😂😂

DramaAlpaca · 30/08/2020 17:14

I've always been called Mummy or Mum by my children. To DH's Irish family I've always been Mammy or Mam. I don't mind, I'll always be Mum to the three people who actually matter.

SBTLove · 30/08/2020 17:16

My adult DC say Mammy and teens say Mum, do you think Mammy sounds common?Hmm
If you say Mum I’m sure your DC will copy or do you expect everyone to change how they appeal for you?

NiceGerbil · 30/08/2020 17:16

Personally I didn't really mind what they call me. I called myself mummy as that's what I'm used to. They both call me something else and don't use daddy either!

I'm the end they will decide what to call you Grin

lurkerbutijusthadtoshare · 30/08/2020 17:16

My mum is from Birmingham but i grew up in Kent so she taught me to call her ‘mum’ despite calling her own mum ‘mom’. Then when I got to about 17 I switched to Mama and it’s stuck ever since. Only if I’m talking directly to her or about her to my partner, anyone else I just say mum as it’s easier. I’ll hopefully be mama to my children 😊
