All the other kids in the family have a slight regional variant for mum or mummy but I don’t like it ... aibu to just want to be mum or mummy?

@Thisismytimetoshine

The only one I'd put my foot down about is Mumma. Why would anyone insist on that?!
Oh this, yes! I cannot bear this new-fangled “Mumma” thing. Why, why? In these parts it’s usually thrown around by the “making memories” Instagram crowd.

Thank you @Thisismytimetoshine, I thought it was just me.

BrennieGirl · 30/08/2020 19:20

@Doyouwantanothercuppa

I love being a Mam/Mammy. I would correct my kids every time if they tried to call me Mum.
Same here. One of the reasons I moved back to Ireland was so I’d be Mammy not Mummy.
NerrSnerr · 30/08/2020 19:23

I was brought up in a 'mam' area and my mum was 'mum' as she wasn't local. We did all call her Mam for most of our teenage years though just to piss her off because she thought it sounded really common.

BikeTyson · 30/08/2020 19:23

I lived in a Mam area but my mum and dad weren’t local so I called her Mum. I just ended up referring to my Mam if I was talking about her but calling her Mum when I was talking to her. I still find myself switching between the two that way now.

BrennieGirl · 30/08/2020 19:24

I’m being a bit thick here but I don’t understand the map linked above. There’s no key.

Doilooklikeatourist · 30/08/2020 19:29

I'm Mum , was Mummy , and live in a Mam , Mammy area ( Wales )
DS used to call my by my name , which I didn't mind as no one else called me Mummy , they all called me my name
And yes , we did get the posh voice Mummy every now and then , I just did the Maammeeah in return and it soon stopped
Just call yourself what you like , and ignore the other way

DrownedDuffers · 30/08/2020 19:34

Is mom Midlands generally or more specific to Birmingham and Black Country? It used to set my teeth on edge when nursery cards referred to me as "mom"!

I'm firmly a south coast mum/ mummy in Birmingham.

Pepperwand · 30/08/2020 19:35

Those saying Mama is it like Downton Abbey Mam-ah or Ma-Ma like dolls used say?

Neither. When I've heard it said it was "mah-mah". Sounds awful to me but I suppose it depends what you're used to.

Def Black Country / West Mids generally.

Not sure what it is on East Midlands

Waveysnail · 30/08/2020 19:44

Crikey I answer to mum, mummy, ma, doesn't really matter tbh

EnidinGuernsey · 30/08/2020 19:46

This reminds me of when I used to work in an area getting young adults into work in a RP kind of area. One girl I worked with spoke with a "general" RP English accent usually - one you couldn't tell where she came from. She answered her phone one day to her mother when I was with her and spoke to her in the loveliest perfect Scottish accent. I must've said something like wow! and she explained that she spoke with/picked up the English accent to make life easier at school and to not look different but her parents hated it and so she always retained Scots at home Smile

ChikiTIKI · 30/08/2020 19:46

I wanted to be called something other than mummy like mammy or mam but my child couldn't say it and the other thing she called me just stuck, so I am that now. Which I like as its unique and when she is older she will have to always make me a mothers day card as she won't be able to buy one with the right name on it 🙂

livelyredjellybean · 30/08/2020 19:49

My DH refers to me as ‘Mami’ as that’s normal in this part of Wales. I’m extremely pleased my DD(3) refers to me as ‘mummy’ though! With enough repetition from you, your DC should pick up what you want them to call you.

Thisismytimetoshine · 30/08/2020 19:50

How does Mami differ from Mammy?

Teateaandmoretea · 30/08/2020 19:52

@DrownedDuffers I think to some extent it’s old fashioned. My parents both called theirs ‘mom’ but I barely ever hear it these days. I think it is a smaller area that it it still used in than the past.

bookmum08 · 30/08/2020 19:57

I don't think 'Mumma' is particularly new. I remember in the film The Piano (set in 1850 something?) the child character called her mother 'Mumma'.

Sciencebabe · 30/08/2020 20:00

My kids decided what to call me. We went with mummy, and we still say 'give it to mummy' and my kids still say 'mama' (which we have never used)

HarrietM87 · 30/08/2020 20:00

Irish here and call my own mother mammy. I wanted to be mammy to DS but he calls me mama. DH is dada (equally stressed syllables).

Personally I hate “mum” and “mummy” (mummy especially sounds really twee and posh to me) and would rather be called by my first name than either of those. It’s just personal preference.

NearlyGranny · 30/08/2020 20:00

Do people say mom to rhyme with bomb?! I thought mom and mum both came out rhyming with thumb! After all, mother has the /u/ sound.

My DH tried to get our DC to call me 'Mam' but it never stuck. Likewise he now refers to me as 'Nanny' but that won't stick either. DGC is only babbling as yet - a lockdown baby.

I'm Mum/Mummy and mean to be Granny to the littlest. DH's choice is Grandad and I wouldn't dream of challenging that. DGC will doubtless invent names for us both anyway!

853ax · 30/08/2020 20:03

I didn't grow up in a mummy area but my first children did from nursery picked up mummy I tried change to mammy no luck. Moved area my youngest nursery use mommy.
My older children still use mummy ( a lot) youngest has a mix mumu/mom.
Oldest said if around friends going to use mom. Think as area we now in is not mummy she finds it babyish

stormystormysky · 30/08/2020 20:04

I’m in a mom area and I am mom, but you can be called whatever you want!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 30/08/2020 20:06

DS2 has taken to calling me Mother recently. I think it was supposed to be annoying, but I really like it

WendyHoused · 30/08/2020 20:07
@WendyHoused I say "my dad/mum" even when talking to my siblings about them - when talking to the younger ones about my step mum (their mum) I say "your mum".

I'm mum, as is my mum (unless we want to annoy her then it's Maw Grin)
Absolutely!

elizabethdraper · 30/08/2020 20:10

I am maaaaaa, mam, mammy
Never mum or mummy - urgh just the thoughts of

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 30/08/2020 20:12
